Alleged tax-haven scheme linked to Canada’s largest brokerage firm

Posted on March 8, 2018March 8, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

In a continuing crackdown on tax evasion, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has alleged that brokers with a branch of RBC Dominion Securities, Canada’s largest brokerage company, helped clients set up accounts in the small European principality of Liechtenstein in order to avoid taxation on their wealth.

In affadavits submitted by the CRA, brokers with an RBC Dominion Securities office in Victoria, British Columbia, allegedly helped clients set up 16 offshore entities with a division of the LGT Group in Liechtenstein. While that is not a crime under Canadian law, auditors allege that the entities were used to help Canadians hide worldwide income. Thirteen individuals are either being audited or have made voluntary disclosures, admitting to tax evasion. The agency is presently investigating to see if there are any other individuals participating in this scheme. Regarding the inquiry, dubbed “Project Jade”, the CRA will only say that it was launched on information from a “confidential informant”.

RBC issued a written statement, saying “As a firm, we have never encouraged Canadians — not 25 years ago and not today — to set up entities in Liechtenstein, and we have never instructed our investment advisers to recommend that practice,” and “we comply with all CRA requirements. This means that we provide all our clients with the forms they need to meet their personal tax obligations, and also file reports with CRA that form the basis for reviews such as this.”

Three RBC employees are presently being investigated, with one remaining unidentified.

Man pulls a 126,292-pound truck over 137 feet, sets world record

Canadian Reverend Kevin Fast has set a new record in the “heaviest vehicle pulled over 100 feet”, beating his previous best. The record was set on “Live’s Guinness World Record Breaker Week”, an annual feature on the American talk show program Live with Regis and Kelly.

The previous record for this category, also set by Fast, was 125,660 lbs (57,000 kg). With the surprise addition of 92-pounder co-host Kelly Ripa to the International Loadstar truck being pulled, Last hauled a load of 126,292 (57,285 kg) lbs over 137 feet (42 meters).

Between pants, the Cobourg, Ontario resident told Regis Philbin and Ripa that he was “a little worried” during the pull. But the first thing he said after the attempt was “I feel great!” Paramedics were standing by, and quickly inspected him after the attempt.

Fast’s only food in preparation for the event was a cup of coffee. He pulled on a rope, anchored by a parked car.

“Live’s Guinness World Record Breaker Week” continues until Friday. Stuart Claxton from the company Guinness World Records has been judging all of the record attempts, as he has for many years for the program.

Blair ally Lord Levy arrested

Police have arrested Lord Levy, chief fundraiser to the Labour Party and close associate of Tony Blair. Lord Levy was arrested by the Specialist Crime Directorate of London’s Metropolitan police as part of an on-going investigation into the cash-for-peerages row which has troubled the Labour government since the start of the year. He was bailed on Wednesday afternoon without charge pending further enquiries.

In a statement, Lord Levy said the arrest was “totally unnecessary”. A spokesman also said: “He has not been charged and does not expect to be, as he has committed no offence.”

The cash-for-peerages affair erupted earlier this year, after an independent body reported that Tony Blair had sold peerages (the title of Lord) to businessmen in exchange for secret donations to the Labour Party. This potentially breaks the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act of 1925 which was originally introduced after Prime Minister Lloyd George was caught selling peerages for personal funds.

The ruling Labour Party admitted soon after that it had borrowed over £14 million before the last general election in 2005. The opposition Conservative Party also admitted it had been loaned £16 million by wealthy businessmen. It’s believed that as chief fundraiser, Lord Levy arranged the Labour Party’s loans.

All political parties deny any wrong-doing, although the arrest of one of the Prime Minister’s closest allies is going to provide yet more scandal for the already troubled party.

Downing Street has so far declined to comment on what they call a “party matter” and Levy himself has accused the police of “over-reacting”. Some politicians have commented that the situation could be very serious for Mr. Blair.

Honolulu man dies after fall into sewage-contaminated harbor

Posted on March 7, 2018March 7, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, April 8, 2006

A Honolulu man who fell into the sewage-contaminated Ala Wai Yacht Harbor died Thursday night of a massive bacterial infection that caused the loss of one of his legs, septic shock, and ultimately organ failure.

Oliver Johnson, 34, a Honolulu mortgage broker, died between 9:15 and 9:30 p.m. HST Thursday (0715-0730 UTC Friday) when his family removed him from life support. On Friday, March 31, Johnson had apparently fallen into the waters of the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, located at the mouth of the Ala Wai Canal on the western side of Waikiki.

At the time, the canal and surrounding beaches were contaminated by over 48 million gallons of untreated sewage. The extent to which the sewage spill contributed to Johnson’s symptoms remains unclear.

Johnson earlier reported that he had fallen accidentally into the harbor, then later indicated that he had been involved in a fight on board a boat and had been pushed or thrown into the harbor waters. A security guard at Johnson’s apartment reported that he was bloodied and soaking wet, and that he stumbled into the lobby and collapsed. Paramedics took Johnson to Straub Hospital where he was treated and released.

Johnson reported steadily worsening leg pain that weekend and was admitted to Queen’s Hospital on Sunday with breathing difficulties. Doctors that night amputated his left leg above the knee to try to halt the spread of the infection, and Johnson was placed in a medically induced coma.

Initially suspecting that Johnson had contracted streptococcus-caused necrotizing fasciitis, doctors later found that Johnson had contracted three different bacteria, two of which, vibrio vulnificus and aeromonas hydrophila, have flesh-eating properties. Despite the amputation, Johnson’s condition steadily worsened to the point where doctors said that his other leg and left arm would also have needed to be amputated to save his life.

An autopsy performed by the Honolulu medical examiner’s office reported that Johnson had suffered from massive organ failure caused by septic shock. The medical examiner noted that Johnson had a vulnificus infection on his foot and suffered from chronic alcoholic liver disease which may have contributed to the infection’s taking hold.

The Honolulu Police Department has opened a third-degree assault case; with Johnson’s death, homicide detectives are also investigating. State health officials are also investigating Johnson’s illness.

Johnson’s family has retained an attorney to investigate the causes surrounding his illness and death. It is not clear yet whether any legal action will be taken.

Avoid Major Problems With Your Next Project: Use A Moisture Meter}

Posted on March 6, 2018March 6, 2018Categories Real Estate

Submitted by: Agri Mart

Whether your profession requires hands-on labor with a variety of tools and materials in an assortment of environments, or if youre a do-it-yourself kind of person who doesnt mind getting his hands dirty with at-home projects, its essential to get the job done correctly. Mistakes in the process of any project can result in wasted money and resources as well frustration and reworks. One of the biggest hindrances to any project is water. Moisture can be found in just about any place youre working. Identifying this pest can save you trouble. One of the most effective ways to moisture in unwanted places is with a digital moisture meter. Using one could be the most important tool you use.

Essential for Concrete

If youre in the house-building business, you clearly know how important the foundation is. A poorly built foundation could hamper the construction of the entire home. And one of the biggest reasons foundations crack or weaken is due to moisture. Before finishing any foundation or concrete job, you need to use a moisture meter. Doing so will ensure that your foundation is stable and will support any building set upon it. This will save you headaches and extra work that will only increase expenses and time.

Dont Forget Your Floors

Homeowners know the devastation that can occur when water seeps into the flooring. The results can be extremely expensive and labor intensive. Not only that, but health concerns can come from water damage in the form of mold. A digital moisture meter will detect the extent of the water damage and can help apprise homeowners of the financial and renovation implications of the issue. Using a meter might just help you salvage part or all of your flooring, thus saving you precious cash and hassles. Anytime you suspect moisture within your flooring, call a specialist to use one of these tools or get your hands on one yourself.

Check the Wood

If you live in an area where heavy rainfall is common, youre used to treating wood decks, beams, fences and other wood-made structures. While applying stains and water protection products have their place and help, sometimes water damage is unavoidable. If your deck, for example has suffered the ravages of precipitation, using a digital moisture meter will help you assess just how bad the damage is. You can then determine whether a simple repair is needed or if you need to replace the entire structure or parts of the structure. In addition, detecting the amount of moisture in the wood will help you make necessary repairs before mold begins to set in.

No Other Choice

In your work or in your at-home projects, getting jobs done on time and correctly is non-negotiable. You cant afford to throw away time and money by having to make repairs that could have been avoided had you used the right tools to identify moisture. Dont let any major project take off without using one of these useful devices.

You can find a digital moisture meter at an affordable price. Make sure you have one for your next task.

Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch to be auctioned off

Posted on March 6, 2018March 6, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Neverland Valley Ranch, owned by Michael Jackson, is to be sold at auction on March 19, 2008, unless Jackson pays over US$24 million.

Financial Title Company, the trustee of his Santa Barbara County, California, home and amusement park, has foreclosed on the property. They notified Jackson of the foreclosure and sale on Monday. Jackson had only just recently paid an overdue property tax bill of $600,000.

The court filing, addressed to Jackson, says, “You are in default of a deed of trust … Unless you take action to protect your property it may be sold at a public sale.” Fox News published the filing.

The foreclosure includes the ranch and all possessions on the property, inside or out.

The foreclosure auction will take place in front of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse in Santa Barbara. Jackson has until then to pay $24,525,906.61 he owes the title company.

In 2006, Jackson refinanced previous loans that had been bought up by Fortress Investment Group. The $300-million loan was secured with the aid of Sony Music Entertainment. However, the Neverland property was not part of that deal.

Jackson has not lived at Neverland since June 30, 2005, when he moved to Bahrain after a rape charge and subsequent acquittal.

Victoria Wyndham was one of the most seasoned and accomplished actresses in daytime soap opera television. She played Rachel Cory, the maven of Another World‘s fictional town, Bay City, from 1972 to 1999 when the show went off the air. Wyndham talks about how she was seen as the anchor of a show, and the political infighting to keep it on the air as NBC wanted to wrest control of the long-running soap from Procter & Gamble. Wyndham fought to keep it on the air, but eventually succumbed to the inevitable. She discusses life on the soap opera, and the seven years she spent wandering “in the woods” of Los Angeles seeking direction, now divorced from a character who had come to define her professional career. Happy, healthy and with a family she is proud of, Wyndham has found life after the death of Another World in painting and animals. Below is David Shankbone’s interview with the soap diva.
