UK Parliamentary report: homophobia in sport worse than racism

Sunday, February 12, 2017

According to a report produced by the Culture, Media and Sport select committee of the House of Commons in the United Kingdom on Friday, discrimination against homosexuality is now a worse problem in sports than racism and sports governing bodies have failed to effectively respond to the problem.

The wide-ranging report from the select committee was sparked in part by controversy around comments by professional boxer Tyson Fury that the Committee’s report described as “violently homophobic”. The subsequent inclusion of Fury on a shortlist for the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Award was, according to the report, “symptomatic of homophobia not being taken seriously enough” and “an example of how homophobic abuse is allowed to pass unchallenged too often”.

The report praised the inclusion of 44 lesbian, gay or bisexual athletes in the team sent by the United Kingdom to the 2016 Olympics in Rio, as well as the visibility of a number of top openly gay athletes including diver Tom Daley and Welsh international rugby player Gareth Thomas, but noted sport still lags behind wider society in acceptance, visibility and respect afforded to lesbian, gay and bisexual people. The authors of the report cited numerous examples of discrimination across different sports including the controversy around Tyson Fury’s comments; comments by boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, with subsequent termination of a sponsorship contract Pacquaio had with Nike; verbal abuse faced by British race walker Tom Bosworth; alleged discriminatory comments by Russian Olympic athlete Yelena Isinbayeva; and the “extensive homophobic backlash” faced by the now-retired basketball player John Amaechi when he came out as the first openly gay player in the NBA.

Discrimination is responsible, according to the report, for many lesbian, gay and bisexual people dropping out of participation in sporting activity. The report cited a study, “Out on the Fields”, which found 30% of gay men surveyed said they had been discouraged from pursuing sport due to experiences from physical education classes in school. The report recommended sports governing bodies “extend their work in schools explicitly to address the problem of homophobia”, and warned the exclusion of lesbian, gay and bisexual people has negative effects for both the individuals concerned and for the sports which potentially miss out on talent when players do not feel they are made welcome.

The report recommended football clubs need to apply a zero-tolerance policy on anti-homosexual abuse from fans and issue “immediate bans” of one to two years. The report called on corporate sponsors to make it clear to players they won’t risk losing sponsorship deals if they come out, citing as a positive change the reform to sponsorship contracts by Adidas. The report also cited the need for visible campaigns against anti-homosexual discrimination in sports to parallel earlier efforts to fight against racism, such as the Kick It Out and Show Racism the Red Card campaigns, and urged sports governing bodies make a sustained commitment to such campaigns.

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”

Future Neighborhoods Will Likely be Compact, Greener, and Friendlier

by

Z. Peter Lazar

American home and neighborhood designs change constantly. If you put yourself randomly in a 20th century neighborhood, chances are that you could tell the decade it was built, even after the avocado-green siding is replaced. We may be in for an even bigger than normal shift in the next decade. How will a 2015 neighborhood be different than a 2007 subdivision? Here are some recent trends:

Movement to smaller, greener and more livable homes

New homes are undoubtedly getting smaller. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average size of a house under construction fell 7.3 percent in the July-September quarter of 2008. A January 2009 survey of builders reported that 90 percent are building smaller homes.

Until recently, homebuilders focused on grand houses that maximize square footage and feature high-end upgrades. Today, builders are more likely to highlight how their homes save money and energy. As people value operating costs more, they start thinking more about these things, said Roger Voisinet, noted EcoBroker and President of Cvilleproperties.com. People are choosing solar and more energy-efficient heating and cooling.

More attention is being paid to the quality of space rather than the quantity of space. Time after time people leave the basement unfinished and put their money into good trim and quality elsewhere in the house. said Voisinet. People are also getting more creative with spaces. He cited Belmont Lofts, which are popular condos in downtown Charlottesville where moveable, Shoji screen walls allow smaller rooms to be transformed into larger living spaces.

Economic fears are impacting design, suggests author and architectural psychologist Sally Fretwell. People are now more simplistic in design and in building material. People are probably less showy, said Fretwell, who also owns a paint store in Richmond, Virginia. Cost is more of a factor but by being more thoughtful, home purchasers focus on the details. People are looking at things differently. Said Fretwell, They are a lot more creative. Thats wonderful.

Migration to new urban centers with common greens and ready-built community

Besides moving into smaller homes, Americans are moving to communities with denser housing and village aspects that evoke neighborhoods of our great-grandparents.

Arthur C. Nelson, a leading housing expert who has studied housing trends for 20 years, expects that migration to denser living will bring sweeping changes to American society. According to Nelson, Surveys indicate a growing preference for urban living. Roughly half of all households want the opportunity to live in neighborhoods and communities with higher density housing, a mix of housing types and household income levels, sidewalks, proximity to stores and restaurants, accessibility to transit options and other “smart growth” features associated with well-designed urban areas.

Nelson predicts that there will be a surplus of between 3 million and 22 million homes on large lots (built on one-sixth of an acre or more) by 2025. He and other experts foresee these big homes in the exurbs eroding in value, with many of them being subdivided into multiple units.

Lifestyle has influenced people as much as economics in the growing taste for clustered, walkable neighborhoods. In an October 10, 2008 New York Times article, Kathleen Gerson, a professor of sociology at New York University describes the sense of well-being from being able to walk around and recognize your neighbors or even shopkeepers. Gerson said this sense of well-being is second only to being able to provide food and shelter for the family. We know from studies that in close-knit urban communities, where private space is not as plentiful, public space becomes more central, she said. Indeed, many families said they did not spend a lot of time at home. There are always trade-offs in these choices. Families are resilient and find ways to adapt to whatever their circumstances.

The community-oriented changes in where people choose to live coincides with new research on psychological studies of happiness. According to the Handbook of Psychology, by Irving Weiner and Donald Freedheim, the strongest predictor of happiness [is] social connectedness. People who are relatively alone in the world are much less happy than people who have close connections with others. All other objective predictors of happiness, including money, education, health, and place of residence, are only weakly correlated with happiness.

What might a neighborhood of 2015 look like?

A recent Chicago Tribune article summarizes the eight great real estate trends of 2009:

Smaller Houses

More apartments

Increase in attached housing

More rental units

New urban centers with homes close to shops and restaurants

Common green spaces for outdoor enjoyment of homeowners.

Creating Community – where the developer provides social features beyond land, bricks and mortar.

Online marketing of homes

(see http://archives.chicagotribune.com/2008/dec/26/realestate/chi-real-estate-trends_chomes_12dec26)

So, what might a Year 2015 neighborhood look like? There will probably be many variations of neighborhoods that adopt the above trends.

Cohousing as a Case Study

One kind of modern neighborhood is cohousing, which is mostly unknown in the U.S. but which constitutes 25% of new development in Denmark. Cohousing is a pedestrian-oriented neighborhood where single family and attached homes surround a common green. Homes are smaller and closer together than the typical 2007 house, but space is efficiently used and homeowners enjoy a large clubhouse, shared gardens, a large playground, and other common amenities. Often a cohousing neighborhood is located near an urban center further promoting walkability and neighborliness. Marketing of the homes is typically online or through word-of-mouth. Private spaces and backyards are a standard feature of cohousing. Solar, geothermal and other green features are also very common. But markedly different than typical housing developments, there are social aspects built-in. Neighbors have the option of taking part in potlucks and common meals and also working together on common tasks (such as landscaping and decision-making). In summary, cohousing is one example of where people buy houses not so much based on raw home size but more based on improving their social and private lifestyle as well as reducing their carbon footprint. Proponents of cohousing refer to it as yesterdays neighborhood today, as a shorthand for describing a community where neighbors know one another and have fun together.

More to Life Than Square Footage

The weaker economy and worries over energy costs may have spurred homebuilders to make smaller, clustered and more energy-efficient homes; however, a broader national mood towards simplicity, and a richer lifestyle is likely to drive further change. As they further realize there is more to life than square footage, people will change their tastes. Clustered housing around green spaces will not only alter the landscape but will foster neighborliness and improve the way people live and relate to one another.

Mr. Lazar is active in the cohousing movement (www.cohousing.org), giving talks and writing articles on the subject. He is a member of Blue Ridge Cohousing (www.blueridgecohousing.org), which is working to build a 26 home cohousing neighborhood in Crozet, Virginia. Peter, his wife, and their two daughters, aged 4 and 7, live in Shadowlake Village Cohousing in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Ozzy Osbourne’s personal possessions fetch $800,000 for charity

Posted on September 28, 2017September 28, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, December 2, 2007

American heavy metal performer Ozzy Osbourne, who became famous as the lead vocalist for Black Sabbath and later as a solo act, has raised more than US$800,000 for The Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program, founded by his spouse Sharon Osbourne at the Cedars Sinai Hospital, by auctioning off personal items.

A number of the items that he auctioned off over the two day period have been seen on his reality TV show The Osbournes, which featured home life with Sharon, Ozzy and their two children. Amongst some of the higher-priced items were a carved walnut Victorian-style custom built pool table which raised $11,250, a painting from Edourad Drouot which fetched $10,500, a pair of Ozzy’s famous round glasses which raised $5,250 and a dog bed given to Sharon by Elton John which sold for $2,375.

Some more famous items were also amongst the 500 lots offered. Ozzy’s black satin coat, complete with bat-wing cape, raised $3,300 and a hand-painted floral cup used regularly on The Osbournes made $1,625. A bronze plaque of a demon’s head that was regularly seen in its position adorning the front door of their house had been expected to go for $800 to $1,200instead raised $8,750. A wire model of the Eiffel Tower from on the kitchen table sold for $10,000, while skull-covered trainers Ozzy had worn reached $2,625. Bidders came from as far away as Germany to buy what they could from his mansion in Beverly Hills, California.

However, three cars included in the auction failed to attract bidders and did not sell. They were a 2006 Bentley Continental Flying Spur, estimated at $160,000 to $180,000, a 2005 Cadillac CTS-V sedan estimated at $30,000 to $40,000 and a 1950 Oldsmobile Futuramic 88 Club Coupe previously owned by author Danielle Steel estimated at $40,000 to $50,000. Sharon had earlier said of the cars “We’re not great car people. They really don’t do a lot for us.

Darren Julien, president of Julien’s Auctions, which organised the two-day sale, said “It did very well. It raised some good money for a very worthy cause.”

“For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular.,” he went on. He also commented on the fact that there was fierce competition for the many artworks included. “We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don’t see every day. For the most part the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd.”

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Posted on September 28, 2017September 28, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Subprime Mortgage Lending 2007 Statement}

Posted on September 28, 2017September 28, 2017Categories Financial Services

Submitted by: Jane A. Smith

The United States Treasury Department, along with several other federal financial regulatory agencies, released a Statement on Subprime Mortgage Lending in June 2007. This sizeable document (it is 31 pages long) is aimed at people involved in borrowing and lending for mortgages at subprime rates. Of particular concern to the authors are adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). The Statement provides guidelines that will ensure more appropriate practices regarding ARMs. The agencies are concerned that lenders persuade borrowers to take out ARM loans by giving them an extremely low rate of interest (called a teaser rate) for the first few months. Unfortunately, this rate adjusts upward very soon to a formula based on and exceeding the prime rate. Now the loan is no longer within the means of the person who is classified as a subprime borrower, and it will cause extreme financial hardship. Other issues covered by the Statement are below.

Adequate documentation of income for subprime borrowers is not always required by lenders. This practice is of concern to the agencies because it leads to so-called liar loans. A borrower can put whatever inflated number he chooses on the application form, knowing there will be no effort to verify that this is truly the amount of his income. These loans greatly increase the chance that the borrower will default, which is a problem for the lender as well.

The agencies also address the problem of the introductory rate period. Most ARM loans include significant penalties for early prepayment, and the penalties extend well past the initial period. In addition, borrowers are not always given full information about additional monthly payments that will be required, such as taxes and homeowners insurance. This failure to disclose such information leaves the borrower at an enormous disadvantage, and will no longer be permitted.

It is interesting and unusual that, three months before releasing the Statement on Subprime Mortgage Lending, the agencies involved in creating it requested comment from the public, from members of Congress, and from financial institutions that engaged in mortgage lending. From the industry came the comment, over and over, that they are opposed to disclosing to borrowers all the details of ARM fees and rates. They think that would result in overloading the consumer with information! This is of great concern to the agencies, and to the author of this article as well. We dont think the average consumer requires the protection of subprime lending agencies from information overload. Consumers can handle information just fine! Failure to disclose costs and fees for which the borrower will be responsible is nothing short of deception.

Virtually all comments reflected uneasiness that there was no adequate definition of the term subprime within the Statement. When the final revision appeared in June, readers were requested to refer back to the definition of a subprime borrower contained in the earlier guidelines document Expanded Guidance for Subprime Lending (2001). All the pertinent characteristic are listed there, and can be used in determining whether a particular borrower should be classified as subprime.

The Statement also requires that every borrower be given a full repayment schedule, including information on amortization, and an estimate of the amount of insurance and taxes that will be applicable. This must be done whether or not the extra costs are escrowed and are included in the loan. The extra charges must be part of a mandatory and accurate calculation of the borrowers debt ratio.

The Statement on Subprime Mortgage Lending is a valuable effort to remedy some of the ailments of the current housing market, and insure that subprime borrowers as well as subprime lenders are not left with a financial disaster on their hands because of imperfect communication between them.

Irish inflation creeps upwards to 2.4%

Posted on September 27, 2017September 27, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, June 11, 2005

The inflation rate in Ireland, as measured by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), edged upwards to hit a five month high in May at 2.4%. This represents a 0.2% rise on the previous month when the rate stood at 2.2%.

The major contributors to the rise were increased transportation, healthcare, and education costs. In April the EU25 average rate of inflation was 2.1%, with Latvia having the highest rate at 7.1% and Sweden the lowest at 0.4%.

Despite the increase in the rate, Irish inflation remains very low – having hit 7% during 2000 and remaining around the 5% until the beginning of 2003. Another major factor easing any worries about the increase is Ireland’s very strong GDP growth – expected to be around 5.5% this year

On an annual basis the cost of footwear and clothing have fallen by 2.7% whilst energy costs have soared by 10.4%. The cost of food, furniture, and communications also fell over the last 12 months.

The Consumer Price Index is made up of over 55,000 prices consisting of 613 headings which cover over 1,000 different items.

Boston rings in the new year

Posted on September 27, 2017September 27, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Monday, January 1, 2007

Last night, 1 million people filed into Boston, Massachusetts to celebrate the 31st Annual First Night celebration. The people who attended the First Night celebration enjoyed live musical performances, ice sculptures, and finally, fire works.

Tonight was a great night for the ice sculptures and the people, as temperatures where around 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius).

At City Hill Plaza, Mayor Thomasn Menino made an appearance and held a countdown to noon for younger people who might not be able to stay up for the festivities that were to happen later in the night.

First Night celebrations were also held in Chatam, Fall River, New Bedford, and other towns and cities.
