Australia Votes 2007: Liberals promise personal income tax cuts

Posted on September 16, 2021September 17, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, October 16, 2007

With the election campaign just beginning, Australian Prime Minister John Howard has promised AU$34 billion in personal income tax cuts over the next three years. That is on top of $31.5 billion announced in May, and $36.7 billion announced in 2006.

The new tax cuts are based on new projections for growth in the Australian economy. The Treasury estimates that the economy will expand by 4.25% in the 12 months to June 2008, up from growth of 3.75% predicted in May.

The Government has challenged the Labor opposition to announce their tax policy immediately.

“The biggest, boldest tax plan that we’ve seen in a long time is presented yesterday, it deals with participation, competitiveness, building capacity in the Australian economy, and what does Kevin Rudd say? Nothing,” treasurer Peter Costello said. “He better have an answer today.”

Costello described the government tax policy as “very responsible” and said Rudd was a “Nothing Man” because he has not revealed Labor’s tax policy.

The Shadow Treasurer, Wayne Swan, replied “The only responsible course of action here is to study the detail. We’ve said we’ll put out all our policies well before the election and we’ll do that”.

“But in terms of what the Government’s put forward, we will take our time to study the detail. That’s the only responsible and reasonable thing to do.”

Economists from Access Economics, the ANZ Bank, HSBC and Macquarie Bank noted that the tax cuts will boost demand at a time when the Reserve Bank is trying to slow the economy. The Reserve Bank has been raising interest rates to keep the inflation rate within its target range. Households with substantial mortgages could end up worse off.

Rudd has said the Opposition will reveal its tax policy in its own time – mimicking John Howard’s approach when he was Opposition Leader in 1996.

Question: 1

A Group Manager sees only one connection for a volume connected to a 2012 host that runs two iSCSI NICs.

What are three possible causes of this problem? (Choose three.)

A. The second iSCSI NIC doesNOThave flow control enabled.

B. The second iSCSI NIC doesNOThave Jumbo Frames enabled.

C. Multi-pathing was NOT applied on the initial connection.

D. Access control is set up for a single IP.

E. The second NIC does NOT have cable connected.

Answer: B, C, D

Question: 2

An engineer is creating snapshot schedules for a volume to protect against data corruption. Snapshots must be taken both hourly and nightly. Each schedule is configured for a max keep of 10. Snapshot borrowing is enabled. The default snapshot schedule has NOT been disabled.

What should be the expected max number of snapshots for this volume?

A. 20

B. 21

C. 10

D. 2

Answer: A

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYVkyLefu2A[/youtube]

Explanation:

Maximumnumber of snapshots created by the schedule to keep. The default is 10 snapshots. The maximum is 512. Once the number of file system snapshots created by the schedule reaches the max-keep limit, the NAS service deletes the oldest snapshot before creating anew snapshot.

Note: Snapshot space borrowing allows you to temporarily increase the available snapshot space for a volume by borrowing from the snapshot reserve of other volumes and from pool free space. This enables you to prevent the oldest snapshots in your collection from being automatically deleted.

Question: 3

An engineer needs to migrate a volume from a live production pool to a newly created pool, but is unable to do so.

What must the engineer do before the migration can start?

A. Offline the volume before migrating.

B. Disconnect active iSCSI sessions to the volume

C. Disable encryption on the group

D. Add or move a member to the new pool.

Answer: D

Explanation:

Note: You can move a volume to a different storagepool only if the new pool has free space equal to the size of the volume and any snapshot reserve and local replication reserve for the volume. If the pool does not have enough space, the volume will not move.

Question: 4

A customer reports that a problematic array is acting up. The customer is able to open SAN HQ and provide a SAN HQ archive, but is unable to get to the Group manager GUI to initiate a diag log pull. The customer tries to use the Group IP address via FTP to retrieve previous diagnostic files, but that is also unsuccessful.

What other option should the customer use to retrieve logs?

A. SNMP transfe

B. Email delivery

C. Dump to console

D. Use HTTPS option

Answer: B

Explanation:

After gathering the log information, the EqualLogic Array will attempt to send them via E-Mail if you have this configured, you also have the option of outputting to a text file.

Question: 5

Which four PC arrays support Vertical Port Failover? (Choose four.)

A. 6510

B. 5500

C. 6610

D. 6100

E. 4210

F. 6210

Answer: C, D, E, F

Explanation:

Question: 6

A new storage administrator (SA) is configuring replication on a newly created 1 TB volume. Management determines that asynchronous replication will be used.

The SA looks at the delegated space on the DR group and determines that there is NOT enough room to fit the replica set for the new volume.

Which action should the SA take at the DR site so that the new volume can be replicated?

A. Increase the delegated space.

B. Reduce the replica reserve on replicated volumes.

C. Reduce the volume by thin provisioning.

D. Increase the replica reserve on the new volume.

Answer: D

Explanation:

When the primary group administrator configures a volume for replication, the administrator assigns a portion of delegated space to the volume. This space, called replica reserve, limits the number of replicas thatyou can keep on the secondary group. You can modify the volume replication configuration and increase or decrease the replica reserve value, as needed.

Wikinews interviews Spanish Paralympic swimmer María Delgado

Posted on September 15, 2021September 16, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, August 10, 2013

Thursday at Madrid–Barajas Airport, Wikinews interviewed Spanish Paralympic swimmer María Delgado, who is scheduled to compete at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships that start on Monday in Montreal, Canada. Delgado will be 15 when she is to compete in Montreal.

((Wikinews)) I’m Laura Hale, I’m interviewing María Delgado who is a Spanish swimmer and who is going to the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, and you have received a lot of press attention from the Spanish press for being the next great Spanish Swimmer, […] [Do you expect to medal in this tournament or in Río?] ((es))Spanish language: ?¿Crees que en este campeonato vas a ganar una medalla o futuro a Río? [Note: The translated question here differed from the one originally asked in English.]

María Delgado: [laughs] I don’t know. ((es))Spanish language: ?Yo qué sé jajaja.

((WN)) The Spanish newspapers say she is the greatest swimmer, she is the next greatest Spanish Paralympic swimmer. Does she feel pressure from the media saying that she is a great swimmer to perform in a really high level? Does she feel pressure to win because the newspapers say it? Spanish newspapers say she is the next great Spanish Paralympic swimmer, that she is going to go to Río.

Translator: She has also been future with “plan AXA”, who bet on young swimmers Paralympics, and has been going at concentrations, which are younger with future have driven a little to fit in the world level of competition.
María Delgado: I’m on a plan for young talent, that is preparing for Rio 2016 and has selected us, and now we go to the World Championship. ((es))Spanish language: ?Estoy en un plan que es de jóvenes promesas, que nos preparan para Río 2016 y ha apostado por nosotros, y ahora vamos al campeonato del mundo.

((WN)) Because you are 15, how do you […] balance going to school and competing?

María Delgado: It’s a little difficult but with hard work and effort it’s doable. Study in the morning and train in the afternoon. ((es))Spanish language: ?Es un poco difícil pero con trabajo y esfuerzo se puede conseguir. Estudio por la mañana y entreno por la tarde.

((WN)) Are you doing school work while you are in Montreal? How does you balance school? How do you do the school at the 15 years old and swim? Because that seems really hard to do both at once.

María Delgado: It is very difficult to combine and train while swimming, with swimming and studying. ((es))Spanish language: ?Sí, es difícil pero se puede cerrar y hay veces que no sé cómo lo hago… estudiando, yo qué sé… Nos explica por ejemplo que en la Universidad pues tienes que ir más ¿? … start very new… que acaba de empezar y todavía no trae ritmo.

((WN)) Because you’re 15 do your parents go with you? Are your parents going to Montreal or are you all traveling solo by yourself?

María Delgado: With my coaches. My parents aren’t going. ((es))Spanish language: ?Con mis entrenadores. Mis padres no van.

((WN)) Only with your coach? ((es))Spanish language: ?¿Sólo con su entrenador?

María Delgado: Yes. ((es))Spanish language: ?Sí.

((WN)) Is it scary to be on your own? Competing against all these 20 year olds and 30 year olds who’ve been to Paralympic games, or you just go “I’m 15, I can — el Mundo es mío [the world is mine]”? ((es))Spanish language: ?¿Tienes miedo o tú vas con todas las ganas de competir con gente mayor?

María Delgado: I’m not scared and I go eagerly. ((es))Spanish language: ?No tengo miedo y voy con muchas ganas.

((WN)) Thank you. ((es))Spanish language: ?Gracias.

Four Boy Scouts killed in Iowa tornado

Posted on September 14, 2021September 15, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Thursday, June 12, 2008

A major storm suspected to be a tornado has reportedly killed four Boy Scouts camping at the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in Little Sioux, Iowa. Roughly ninety-five Scouts aged thirteen to eighteen and twenty-five adult staff members were believed to be camping at the time the alarm was raised. Most of the scouts were from Omaha-Metro Area, including Omaha and Bellevue, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa. It is believed that the scouts had as little as twelve minutes to seek shelter from the time the alarm began to the time the storm hit. Early reports stated that thirty to forty scouts had been injured, that number was later reduced to twenty.

A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America‘s Mid American Council, the region in which the camp was situated, has stated that the storm activated sirens but she couldn’t confirm whether the scouts were staying in tents or buildings.

The Scouts were participating in a training exercise at the 1,800 acre ranch roughly 40 miles northeast of Omaha. Julie Tack, a spokesperson for Iowa Homeland Security, stated that the camp was littered with debris and downed tree branches after being struck by a tornado at or around 7:00 PM Central Daylight Time. Tack went on to say that a search and rescue team had been deployed to the area.

Camp counselors have stated that they were aware of the possibilities that storm was coming and they had heard the tornado sirens going off. There was no underground shelter for the scouts, however they had shelters designated and emergency plans had been discussed the first day of camp. Officials said most of the boys were on a hike when storms moved in.

A camp staff member said that many scouts were injured when a fireplace in one of the shelters collapsed. Most of the injured scouts were treated at hospitals in Sioux City and Missouri Valley, Iowa. Six scouts were brought to the Missouri Valley hospital, most treated for minor injuries and broken bones. One scout suffered a broken hip and was transferred to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

Mercy Medical Center, in Sioux City, have reported two patients arriving by helicopter at 8:13 PM with a third arriving by ambulance. A fourth patient arrived later, again by helicopter. A spokesman for the hospital said the victims are all juveniles and all have serious injuries. Mercy does not expect to receive more camp victims. The names of the victims have not been released.

European Court of Justice rules ISPs not obliged to reveal identity of people suspected of illegal sharing

Posted on September 14, 2021September 15, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Friday, July 20, 2007

It is compatible with the EU legislation that Member States exclude the personal data communication related to the internet traffic when this is requested in order to allow the prosecution of violations of the royalties in civil cases.

According the European Court of Justice (ECJ), the supreme court of European Union, the EU laws do not oblige ISPs to hand over personal data of people suspected of illegal sharing of copyrighted materials over the net.

The ECJ has been asked for a preliminary ruling on question “Does Community law…permit Member States to limit the duty of operators of electronic communications networks and services, providers of telecommunications network access and providers of data storage services to retain and make available connection and traffic information generated during the supply of an information society service to where it is required in connection with a criminal investigation or the need to protect public safety and national defence, thus excluding civil proceedings?” And its opinion, presented by advocate general Juliane Kokott, is that member states are allowed to ‘exclude’ revealing personal data on internet traffic in civil cases. This does not apply to criminal cases, where such compliance would be required.

Moving Into Your First Apartment? Make Sure You Purchase Renter’s Insurance

Posted on September 13, 2021September 14, 2021Categories Insurance

byAlma Abell

If you have just moved into your first apartment, now is a great time to purchase renter’s insurance. If you have never looked into rental insurance before, it is important to understand what it covers before you start shopping for rental insurance. Rental insurance can be broken into three major categories – liability, personal belongings and additional living expenses.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwAC6MnuSsc[/youtube]

The first area that rental insurance covers is liability. If anyone is hurt on your property and needs medical assistance, you are not on the line. Your rental liability insurance will cover anyone who is hurt on your property. If you are ever served with a lawsuit from someone claiming to be hurt on your property, your liability portion of your insurance will cover any lawsuit expenses.

The second area rental insurance covers is personal belongings. You can insure all the belonging inside of your apartment. If someone breaks in and steals anything inside of your apartment, your insurance will pay for the replacement cost of the items. If your apartment catches on fire, your insurance will pay to replace all the items inside of your house.

The third major component of rental insurance is additional living expenses. If something happens your apartment is damaged and unlivable, your insurance can help you out. They will pay for you to live in a hotel until your apartment is livable again.

The three main components of rental insurance are liability coverage, personal belonging coverage and living expenses coverage. Make sure that you cover yourself and purchase insurance. Coast Auto Insurance Services Inc. can help you find the best rate on renter’s insurance. They have been serving customers in California for the past 37 years. They can help you find the best rates and the best coverage possible.

UK public sector workers strike over pension rights

Posted on September 12, 2021September 13, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, March 29, 2006Local Government workers in the UK withdrew their labour yesterday as part of a dispute over pension entitlements. The members of 11 different trades unions were involved in the 24hr strike. As the day began they declared that support for the strike was solid. Although the strikers work for local councils, their pay and conditions are agreed nationally. The Local Government Association which represents the local councils in England and Wales declared predictions that 1.5 million people would stay away from work as “wildly optimistic”.

The Unions’ complaint is that local government workers are being treated unfavourably compared to other public sector employees. They say that agreements on pensions that have been reached with civil servants, teachers and health workers will allow those staff to continue to retire at 60 while local government staff will be forced to work until they are 65. Civil servants work for national government, teachers work for local councils but have their own pension arrangements and most health workers are employed by the state-controlled National Health Service.

The Local Government Association claims that if council workers continue to be able to retire at 60, it will increase the levels of Council Tax (a tax on people living in properties which funds a proportion of local government expenditure) by 2%.

The striking workers provide a wide range of services from assisting teachers in the class room, through inspecting kitchens for hygiene to provising care to the vulnerable in society. In some places council workers collect tolls for road tunnels or manage ferries. Mainstream media have reported on the strike all day with heavy coverage of disruption to commuters where transport has been affected. The unions have emphasised the large number of their members who are women working in low paid jobs.

The Government which regulates the scheme claimed that the early retirement provisions (called the rule of 85) were age-discriminatory and had to be removed.

The strike ended at midnight. The Unions have not declared any further strike days.

The Unions involved were AEP, AMICUS, CYWU, GMB, NAPO, NIPSA, NUJ, NUT, TGWU, UCATT and UNISON.

DHS relies on Wikipedia for asylum information, appeals court rules against use

Posted on September 9, 2021September 10, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that the Department of Homeland Security was wrong in using the online encyclopedia Wikipedia as a reference when deciding whether to allow asylum seekers to stay in the United States.

The department used the Wikipedia article named laissez-passer to decide whether the document was a valid form of identification. This is despite the fact that the article had a large orange notice at the top of the article saying that “this article does not cite any references or sources.”

The Board of Immigration Appeals has stated that it doesn’t “encourage the use of resources such as Wikipedia.com [sic] in reaching pivotal decisions in immigration proceedings.” They said that they allowed the decision to stand due to the fact that the information seemed accurate.

The appeals court noted when making the decision that Wikipedia admits that articles will stay inaccurate and unbalanced for long periods of time. Below is the extract from the court documents that makes this point:

…The site acknowledges [that articles], “may become caught up in a heavily unbalanced

viewpoint and can take some time – months perhaps – to regain a better-balanced consensus.” Id. As a consequence, Wikipedia observes, the website’s “radical openness means that any given article may be, at any given moment, in a bad state: for example, it could be in the middle of a large edit or it could have been recently vandalized.”

Cary Bass, the volunteer coordinator of the Wikimedia Foundation, gave Wikinews the following statement on this issue:

Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia — almost every article can be edited by anyone at any time. The vast majority of the information is accurate and the editors strive to write from a neutral point of view, but the nature of the project is that at any moment, any article can contain erroneous information or pure inaccuracies.

Anyone using Wikipedia as an original source should be mindful of this fact; and anyone citing critical information such as a judge for use in a lawsuit is advised to use the sources provided via each article’s references section, history and talk page to verify that the information they are reading is, in fact, accurate.

However, that is not the concern at the centers as the background of the caregivers is kept in check by the healthcare center authorities before hiring. Healthcare centers like Porvoo chart a stringent hiring standard and thorough references check.

Satellite imagery shows viewing stand for North Korean nuclear test

Posted on September 2, 2021September 3, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, May 8, 2005

According to American and foreign officials, White House and Pentagon officials are closely monitoring spy satellite imagery of North Korea, also known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Preparations seem to be made for testing a nuclear weapon, including the construction of a reviewing stand, most likely for scientists or North Korean officials. It would be the first test of a nuclear weapon by North Korea.

United States officials warned that the intentions of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il are unknown, and the constructions may turn out to be a show. The extent of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities are still unknown. According to the U.S. government agency CIA, North Korea may have one or two primitive nuclear bombs. According to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei, North Korea may possess the material and equipment to manufacture up to six nuclear warheads. North Korea’s neighbours, however, have been thorougly briefed on the implications of a nuclear weapons test by North Korea.

North Korea is among the 188 countries to have signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, although they have later withdrawn again. This treaty states that only the United States, Russia, the People’s Republic of China, France, and the United Kingdom are allowed to have nuclear weapons. Kim Duk Hong, one of the regime’s most senior defectors, says that North Korea resumed the development of its nuclear weapon program as soon as the treaty was signed. Kim also stated that North Korea gained much of its expertise from Pakistan, and that only the death of Kim Jong Il and the destruction of his regime will stop North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

In October 2002, U.S. sources stated that during a visit by Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly, North Korea admitted to running a clandestine nuclear weapons program. This was widely seen as a violation of both the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the 1994 U.S.-North Korea nuclear pact, which were signed during the Clinton administration. North Korean officials stated that the reactivation of their weapon of mass destruction program was in response to “imperialist threats” (presumably by the United States). The United States proceeded to stop shipments of fuel oil under the Agreed Framework.

In late December 2002 North Korea drove United Nations weapons inspectors out of the country, announcing plans to reactivate a dormant nuclear fuel processing laboratory and power plant north of Pyongyang, if the United States did not agree to a non invasion pact. This nuclear reactor is thought by U.S. officials to be the source for plutonium for two previously produced atomic bombs.
