By Ray Roark

Comfort, dexterity, durability, flexibility, protection, and cost are the key considerations when choosing leather gloves for a specific job environment or as a general purpose work glove. A comparison of leather work glove material options, pattern variations, styles and applications will help you choose the most suitable glove.

Glove Leather Types and Quality

The type and quality of leather used are significant considerations in choosing leather work gloves. Gloves are manufactured primarily in cowhide, pigskin, goatskin, and deerskin, each offering unique characteristics specific to the animal.

Cowhide leather

is one of the most rugged and economical leathers used to manufacture gloves due to its availability, comfort, and durability. Specifically, cowhide is good for dexterity, durability, pliability, abrasion resistance, and puncture resistance. Cowhide is also very good in keeping hands warm, but is limited in the leather s breathability. Cowhide dries stiff when it gets wet, becoming hard and losing its flexibility.

Pigskin leather

is a soft and supple leather that is more porous, which makes a glove that is comfortable and resistant to moisture, but not quite as warm as cowhide. High lanolin content keeps this leather soft which does not dry out and crack after repeatedly getting wet. Pigskin is an economical alternative to cowhide, offering more dexterity and breathability with superior pliability. Pigskin leather is the most durable and provides the greatest abrasion resistance of cowhide, goatskin, and deerskin.

Goatskin leather

has the highest natural lanolin content, which makes a very soft and flexible glove that retains its pliability after getting wet. Goatskin offers the improved dexterity, pliability, and breathability of pigskin over cowhide, but does not offer the durability. Abrasion and puncture resistance are about the same as cowhide, while goatskin does not provide as much protection from the cold as cowhide.

Deerskin leather

is extremely soft and supple offering very good dexterity and excellent pliability. Deerskin gloves do not stiffen after getting wet repeatedly and form to the hand over time. Their flexibility also causes them to easily lose their shape with rough wear. Deerskin gloves are the best for comfort, but sacrifice durability, abrasion and puncture resistance. Deerskin glove breathability is limited, like cowhide, and they provide less protection from the cold, similar to goatskin and pigskin gloves.

Leather types are further classified by cuts or splits which offer different levels of quality.

Full-Grain leather

, also called

top-grain leather

, refers to the finest raw material including the outer waterproof skin which provides a thicker, more durable glove with greater abrasion and puncture resistance.

Split leather

is obtained by splitting the rougher interior side of the skin (drop split) from the supportive outer part (grain) yielding a softer and more pliable glove with greater dexterity. Split leather can be divided into 3 types, depending upon which part of the animal the hide is cut:

Side split leather is made by splitting the hide in half along the backbone and is the most durable and uniform split because of its high fiber density.

Shoulder split leather is taken from the neck and shoulder area of the animal and provides abrasion resistance in a more economical grade of leather.

Belly split leather is cut from the underside or belly of the animal and is less consistent in texture and appearance, but the most economical split leather.

Leather Work Glove Linings

Obviously, the lining of the glove is a big factor in hand comfort with a variety of options from no lining to synthetic and natural materials. The most popular leather work glove lining options are listed below:

3M Thinsulate utilizes extremely small fibers of polyester to provide one of the most effective insulation linings without the bulk of natural materials. Manufactured by 3M, it is breathable and retains its exceptional insulating ability in damp conditions.

Pile is synthetic wool that is very popular due to its low cost and similarity to wool.

Thermal linings are manufactured by creating a first layer overlapped by a second layer of material creating a heat insulation pocket between the layers.

Fleece is soft bulky napped cotton with a deep pile and is one of the most common glove liners.

Foam lining features a layer of foam insulation between cotton fleeced jersey and a layer of interlocked cotton.

Thermo lined gloves are thermal gloves with waterproof linings.

Wool linings are odor resistant and provide excellent warmth, even when wet.

Leather Work Glove Patterns

The most common construction for leather work glove styles is the Gunn pattern, but the Clute pattern offers an economical alternative:

Gunn pattern

is manufactured with fully wrapped fingers and thumbs, while the palm side is a separate glove pattern which is sewn at the base of the middle two fingers. This cut allows flexibility with the seam at the natural crease of the fingers and the seamless back affords greater comfort. The finger seams being away from the work area help the glove to last longer.

Clute pattern

refers to gloves with a roomy comfortable fit and seams along every finger and the thumb, down the back of the glove. The palm and bottom of the fingers is covered with one piece of material and no seams on the palm side of the glove.

Leather Work Glove Cuffs

Leather work gloves are available in a wide range of cuffs. Hemmed cuffs offer medium wrist protection; shirred and knit wrists prevent debris from getting into the glove, and safety and gauntlet cuffs offer maximum wrist and forearm protection:

Rolled hem or turned cuffs feature a narrowly rolled hem and create a very finished and clean look.

Hemmed cuffs may use color-coded fabric to hem the cuff of the glove.

Knit Wrist cuffs provide a snug fit to prevent debris or liquids from getting inside the glove.

Shirred cuffs use elastic to gather the glove around the wrist when worn, but not as tightly as the knit wrist.

Safety cuffs provide a higher degree of wrist and arm protection with large 2 ” cuffs. Safety cuffs are manufactured from a variety of materials and include: rubberized, plasticized, starched, denim, leather, and canvas cuffs.

Gauntlet cuffs are a larger form of the safety cuff and provide the highest level of wrist and arm protection with large 4 ” cuffs.

Leather Work Glove Thumb Types

Work gloves are manufactured using one of the following thumb types:

Keystone thumb is a type of thumb stitched separately to conform to the natural position of the thumb. The keystone thumb offers the greatest flexibility and comfort.

Wing thumb is manufactured with the thumb angled diagonally across the palm to improve comfort and natural movement without a seam between the thumb and palm area.

Straight thumb is manufactured with the thumb lying vertically straight from the wrist and is good for gripping.

Leather Work Glove Styles

Leather work gloves can be divided into three basic style groups:

Leather driving gloves

or drivers are one of the most rugged and comfortable work gloves made, featuring flexibility and abrasion, puncture, moisture, and heat resistance. Leather drivers are excellent in a variety of applications, including equipment operation, such as farm, construction, tractor-trailers, and forklifts. Leather drivers are also ideal for general purpose work environments requiring greater dexterity and flexibility, such as material handling, general industrial work, stamping, packaging, fabricating, lumber industry, chainsaw operation, automotive, mining, furniture industry, pipe fitting, assembly and other medium to heavy duty industrial applications.

Leather palm gloves

are one of the most popular and widely used work gloves because of their lower cost, abundance, and ability to handle a wide variety of general industry work applications, such as agricultural, automotive, gardening, construction, landscaping, parks and recreation, large material handling, oil rigging, refinery work, and other heavy industrial environments.

Welding gloves

or welders are a very heavy duty superior heat resistant leather work glove providing hand protection from metal splashes, flames, sparks and ultraviolet radiation for applications in welding, molten metal, and foundries.

Choosing the right leather work glove for you or your workers is simply a matter of understanding your options and their benefits. Leather work gloves offer durability, dexterity, flexibility, comfort and protection in a wide range of quality and costs to accommodate virtually every industrial job setting.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

Posted on May 18, 2021May 19, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.

Erectile Dysfunction on the Rise?

It would appear so, according to studies. The largest increase in the number of ED cases in the coming years is expected to be in South America, Asia and Africa, followed by North America and Oceania.

What is quite shocking, is that the rise in the number of ED cases, is expected to be most in South America, Asia and Africa, regions that are referred to as the ‘developing world’, a world in which healthcare systems are underfunded and not at all well developed,

Shocking Revelations about Erectile Dysfunction

As shocking as it may seem, but the reality is that studies have revealed that:

 • 5% of men who are of the age of 40, suffer from total erectile dysfunction (ED).
 • By the age of 70, almost as many as 15% men suffer from total impotence in men.
 • As far as ED which is mild and moderate goes, 50% of men in their 50s suffer from this and 60% of men in their 60s suffer from this.
 • In men who are past the age of 80, almost as high as 86% of these men suffer from male sexual impotence.
 • It is indicated that in men who are less than the age of 40, the prevalence of ED that ranges from moderate to severe, lies in the range of 2 – 26%.
 • Research was done on more than 400 men and the results showed almost 1 out of 4 erectile dysfunction cases which were new, occurred in men who were less than 40 years of age.
 • Other recent studies show that more and more young men who are less than the age of 30, suffer from ED.
 • As a man grows older, especially as he goes past the age of 65, his chances of getting ED are on the rise.
 • New studies have revealed that ED is becoming more and more prevalent in young men in their 20s and 30s.

Percentages of Age Related Erectile Dysfunction

For severe and moderate cases of ED, studies revealed the following:

 • 70-79 years of age: 36.4% and 27.9%.
 • 60-69 years of age: 15.9% and 25.9%.
 • 50-59 years of age: 6.0% and 14.0%.
 • 40-49 years of age: 1.0% and 7.6%.
 • 30-39 years of age: 0% and 2.6%.
 • 23-29 years of age: 0% and 1.8%.

Risk Factors Contributing To Erectile Dysfunction

There are some very significant risk factors that contribute to men all over the world suffering from ED and these are:

 • Chronic hepatitis
 • History of prostate operations
 • Diabetes mellitus
 • Disc herniation
 • Interpersonal stress
 • Cerebral infarction
 • Hypertension
 • Heart disease
 • Age

Are Certain Men More Prone To Getting Erectile Dysfunction?

Yes there are some men who are at a higher risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction symptoms and these are:

 • Men who have heart diseases.
 • Men who are heavy smokers.
 • Men who suffer from urinary tract infections.
 • Men suffering from diabetes.
 • Men who take drugs.
 • Men who do not exercise.
 • Men who suffer from depression.
 • Men who have high cholesterol.
 • Men who have high blood pressure.
 • Men who are obese.

Just What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

One erectile dysfunction meaning is as follows:

‘The inability to reach and maintain an adequate erection to achieve satisfying sexual intercourse’.

Though it is true that ED is not life-threatening, it is also true that when a man suffers from ED, the quality of his life is affected badly, as well as that of his partners. Plus, the man who suffers from ED undergoes all kinds of fears and pressures like:

 • Relationship issues.
 • Loss of self esteem.
 • Work place problems.
 • Loss of confidence.

Is Erectile Dysfunction Age Dependant?

Yes, ED is age dependant. The older you get, the stronger are your chances of getting ED. Total ED in men at the age of 40 was 5% and this rose to 15% in men at the age of 70.

But this does not mean that you cannot get ED at a young age. New studies reveal that up to 1/3rd of young men have ED.

Is Erectile Dysfunction Medicine Available?

Yes, there are a number of medicines that are available for the treatment of ED and some of these are:

 • Oral Medicines: Tadalista, Fildena, Suhagra, Tadasoft, Filagra, Vidalista, Cenforce, Tadarise, Avaforce, Tadacip and Malegra.
 • Penile Implants.
 • Intraurethral Medications.
 • Niacin: Also called vitamin B3.
 • Vacuum Erection Devices.
 • Natural Herbs.
 • Testosterone Therapy.
 • Erectile Dysfunction Exercises.
 • Foods: Certain foods help in treating ED and these include watermelon, bananas, coffee, spinach, green onions, carrots, cherries, avocados, to name a few.
 • Penile Injections.

What Is The Main Cause Of Erectile Dysfunction?

If you are seeking the answer to this, then what you need to understand is that there is no ‘main erectile dysfunction cause’ for men all over the world, to suffer from ED. There are a number of reasons why men suffer from sexual dysfunction symptoms and some of the major reasons include psychological factors, physical factors, reduced flow of blood, use of drugs, hypogonadism, use of some kinds of medicines, urological issues, use of alcohol, issues with the functioning of blood vessels and injuries. If you want to get more detail about ED and men impotence then have a peek here: EDBalance.

The truth is, no matter what is the reason for which you are suffering from ED, you can be treated for it. As you can see, men all over the world suffer from ED and these men have various male sexual dysfunction treatment options that are available to them. By talking to a male doctor specialist, your doctor will be able to advise you as to what the best Erectile Dysfunction treatmentoption is available to you. You can also be sure of another fact, in case one treatment does not work for you, another one will or a combination of treatments will definitely work on you, to treat you for ED and ensure that you start living a healthy and normal life – sex life included! And keep in mind, though it is true that – Erectile Dysfunction: A typical worldwide issue for men, it need not be an issue for you!

Volunteers and food needed for flooded Manitoba, Canada

Posted on May 16, 2021May 17, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Local municipal and provincial volunteers in Manitoba, Canada are exhausted in their efforts to divert the rising waters of the Red River of the North.

It has been hard work with little sleep for the residents who live on the shores of the Red River to shore up their defences with sandbags, build dikes, clear frozen culverts and break ice jams

Volunteers to spell relief for local volunteers and food are desperately needed.

“It’s a week now we’ve been doing this … you’re talking four, five, six public works guys. In my one community we’ve got 25 volunteer firefighters and those guys have been going 24/7, so of course it’s wearing them down.” said Paul Guyader, Manitoba’s emergency measures coordinator.

“We’re dealing with one of the biggest floods the province has ever seen,” said Steve Strang, mayor of St. Clements, Manitoba “We’ve put out hundreds of thousands of bags already. The municipalities are working very well, we’re working with the provincial government, we’ve brought in every possible resource we could to address this issue. The volunteerism within the community has been phenomenal.”

The Portage Diversion has taken some spring waters from the Assiniboine River and diverted the flow to Lake Manitoba.

Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation has been totally evacuated, as well as many homes near the Canada – United States border.

The cold weather is freezing the ice jams into place. Guyader has had 2 Amphibex Excavators operating on the river breaking up ice.

The Red River is right now 16.7 feet (5 metres) above spring ice conditions. The Red River Floodway gates cannot be opened with the current ice jams.

“If we operate now, we can get ice jamming going into the floodway, jamming up against the St. Mary’s bridge, as such, the floodway capacity would be reduced and would cause higher water levels in the city of Winnipeg.” said Steve Topping, Manitoba Water Stewardship spokesman

The floodway was constructed in 1968 following the 1950 flood to divert the overflow spring flooding waters of the Red River. The floodway has been widened the since the 1997 “flood of the century” and the expansion is expected to be completed this spring. As well Manitoba built permanent dikes around communities within the flood plain since the last two major floods..

The Red River waters will crest between the beginning of April to mid April, at which time also the weather should be warming up. Communities are bracing for higher water levels, more ice jams as well as melting snow in the warmer spring temperatures.

Fire at historic Welsh ex-hotel Bontddu Hall kills one

Posted on May 15, 2021May 16, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, June 6, 2020

A fire broke out yesterday at Bontddu Hall near Dolgellau in Gwynedd, Wales. The historic mansion is a former hotel with high-profile guests. A rescued woman died at the scene.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were called to the building, located off the A496 overlooking the Mawddach Estuary in Snowdonia National Park, at 09:09am local time. Resources sent included appliances from Dolgellau, Harlech, Barmouth, Bala, and Blaenau Ffestiniog according to a fire service statement, as well as an aerial ladder platform, high volume pump, and the service’s incident command unit.

Police, the ambulance service, and an air ambulance also attended. Photos and video from the blaze showed thick smoke with flames visible at windows. The fire service indicated an investigation working alongside North Wales Police was underway. Bontddu Hall recently underwent building work and scaffolding was still erected at the time of the fire.

Bontddu Hall dates to 1873, originally a 20-room mansion, and was a country retreat for the Mayor of Birmingham called Bryn Tirion before becoming a hotel. Guests include regular visitor ex-UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and actor Richard Burton who stayed at Bontddu Hall while filming his 1949 movie debut The Last Days of Dolwyn.

The hotel closed around fifteen years ago, with local press reporting in 2004 then-new owner Tong Yung-soo, who had purchased Bontddu Hall in 2001, and his wife applied to make it a residence once more. The move was met with what WalesOnline called “fury” from local tourism chiefs. The then-manager of Barmouth Publicity and Director of Mid Wales Tourism Partnership, David Clay, called it “a retrograde step” and said “[a]n area like this cannot afford to lose such a quality hotel.”

The Tongs indicated issues staffing the hotel, something Clay recognised, and Mr Tong had said they intended to “restore the hall to its former glory.” Following the hotel’s closure it has remained a private home.

Wikinews discusses DRM and DMCA with Richard Stallman after GitHub re-enables public access to youtube-dl

Posted on May 15, 2021May 16, 2021Categories Uncategorized
This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wednesday, April 21, 2021

On November 16, code-sharing and hosting service GitHub re-enabled the public access to youtube-dl repository, a software which can download videos from the internet via the command-line. This move comes after Mitchell Stoltz, a Senior Staff Attorney of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), sent a letter to GitHub on the behalf of youtube-dl’s maintainers. The repository was previously blocked on October 23, after GitHub received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) take-down notice from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Started in July 2008, youtube-dl is a free/libré open source software written in Python which can download videos from various websites. Citing alleged violation of 17 U.S. Code § 1201 Circumvention of copyright protection systems, RIAA’s takedown notice had alleged youtube-dl was intended to circumvent the technological protection measures of streaming services and to redistribute music videos without authorisation. youtube-dl’s source code had a number of unit tests to check if the software works in different circumstances or not. Some of the test cases included URLs of some copyrighted songs.

In the letter to GitHub, EFF’s attorney Stoltz said “This file contains series of automated tests that verify the functionality of youtube-dl for streaming various types of video. The youtube-dl source code does not, of course, contain copies of these songs or any others […] the unit tests do not cause a permanent download or distribution of the songs they reference; they merely stream a few seconds of each song to verify the operation of youtube-dl. Streaming a small portion of a song in a non-permanent fashion to test the operation of an independently created software program is a fair use.” The letter stressed “youtube-dl does not decrypt video streams that are encrypted with commercial DRM technologies”.

The URLs to copyrighted songs were removed from the source code on November 16, and replaced with a test video that uploaded on YouTube by Philipp Hagemeister, former maintainer of youtube-dl. Philipp Hagemeister had previously spoken about the takedown with Wikinews.

youtube-dl comes with a small JavaScript interpreter where it acts as a web-browser would behave while receiving video data from the server. The script has “extractors” for various websites to handle videos from different sources. “Any software capable of running JavaScript code can derive the URL of the video stream and access the stream, regardless of whether the software has been approved by YouTube”, the letter read. It borrowed an analogy of Doors of Durin from J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings for explanation: travelers come upon a door that has writing in a foreign language. When translated, the writing says “say ‘friend’ and enter.” The travelers say “friend” and the door opens. As with the writing on that door, YouTube presents instructions on accessing video streams to everyone who comes asking for it.

Hours after the public access was restored, Sergey M, one of the maintainers of youtube-dl wrote on GitHub, “We would like to thank @github for standing up for youtube-dl and making it possible to continue development without dropping any features. We appreciate [GitHub] for taking potential legal risks in this regard. We would also like to thank [EFF] and personally [Mitch Stoltz] for invaluable legal help. We would also like to heartily thank our main website hoster Uberspace who is currently being sued in Germany for hosting our essentially business card website and who have already spent thousands of Euros in their legal defense.”

Hours after GitHub restored the public access to the repository, Stoltz tweeted “I think of youtube-dl as a successor to the videocassette recorder. The VCR empowered people to take control of their personal use of free-to-air video, but it had to be saved from the copyright cartel. The same goes for youtube-dl. GitHub did the right thing here.”

youtube-dl is used by thousands of people around the world. Multiple Creative Commons-licensed and public domain videos on Wikimedia Commons are uploaded via a tool called video2commons, which relies on youtube-dl to download media. youtube-dl also lets users download videos from LiveLeak — a video-sharing platform for citizen journalism. Videos downloaded using youtube-dl are also used for the purpose of fair use, or for evidence.

When a copyright holder chooses to release their work, be it a photograph, a video, or audio, under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license, they allow everyone to freely own, share or modify the work as long as the reusers properly attribute the author of the work. YouTube also hosts many audio and video recordings in the public domain which can be used for any purpose without any restrictions.

In the blog post announcing “youtube-dl is back”, GitHub said, “Although we did initially take the project down, we understand that just because code can be used to access copyrighted works doesn’t mean it can’t also be used to access works in non-infringing ways. We also understood that this project’s code has many legitimate purposes, including changing playback speeds for accessibility, preserving evidence in the fight for human rights, aiding journalists in fact-checking, and downloading Creative Commons-licensed or public domain videos.”

GitHub also announced any new 1201 takedown notices will be “carefully scrutinised by legal experts” to reject “unwarranted claims”, and said it will side with software developers if the claims are ambiguous. The announcement also mentioned GitHub Trust and Safety team would treat developer’s tickets as a “top priority”. GitHub also pledged donation of USD 1 million for developer defense fund “to help protect open source developers on GitHub from unwarranted DMCA Section 1201 takedown claims”.

GitHub had blocked public access to many forks of youtube-dl upon receiving the DMCA notice in October. At that time, Wikinews noted public access was not yet restored for the forked repositories listed in RIAA’s copyright notice and was still displays “Repository unavailable due to DMCA takedown”.

During the period when GitHub had disabled public access for the repository, Sergey M had been developing youtube-dl and hosting it on GitLab, another code-sharing and hosting site. However, since GitHub has restored public access of youtube-dl, Sergey M has made the GitLab repository private.

After this, Wikinews reached out to Richard Stallman, the founder of Free Software Foundation, who has been highly critical of DRM (digital rights management, the subject of the DMCA) for many years now, to discuss the harms of DRM and DMCA 1201.

Retrieved from “https://en.wikinews.org/w/index.php?title=Wikinews_discusses_DRM_and_DMCA_with_Richard_Stallman_after_GitHub_re-enables_public_access_to_youtube-dl&oldid=4619261”

Automation Creates Demand For More Tech Savvy Shipping And Receiving Clerks}

Posted on May 14, 2021May 15, 2021Categories Shipping

Submitted by: Tom Knapp

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, shipping, receiving and traffic clerks familiar with computers and other electronic and business equipment will find more ready employment due to an increase in the automation of the system. Depending on the size of the establishment for which they work, shipping, receiving and traffic clerks typically could handle a wide range of responsibilities through the use of computers, scanners, and other electronic equipment. For smaller companies, clerks are responsible for maintaining records, preparing shipments, package sorting, and accepting deliveries. In both environments, shipping, receiving, and traffic clerks should expect to lift cartons of various sizes and employ the use of a box cutter.

Shipping Clerk Responsibilities

In preparing shipments of outgoing mail, shipping clerks must ensure orders have been filled correctly, as well as filling out shipping documents and mailing labels. They also record items taken from inventory and note when orders were filled. In smaller operations, a shipping clerk may fill the order themselves: taking merchandise from the stockroom, noting when inventories run low, and packing the goods in shipping containers. In addition, shipping clerks prepare invoices and furnish information about shipments to other parts of the company, such as an accounting department. Once a shipment is ready to go, a clerk may sort and move goods from the warehouse to the shipping dock or truck terminal and direct their loading.

Receiving Clerk Responsibilities

Similar to that of a shipping clerk, receiving clerks also determine whether orders have been filled correctly by verifying incoming shipments against the original order and accompanying bill of lading or invoice. Upon receipt, a record of the shipment and the condition of its content is recorded. Many of today’s receiving clerks use hand-held scanners to record barcodes on incoming products or enter the information manually into a computer. At larger, more automated companies, receiving clerks use radio-frequency identification (RFID) scanners, which store and remotely retrieve data using tags or transponders. Clerks can then check the order for discrepancies in quantity, price and discounts. If merchandise is lost or damaged, clerks may also arrange for adjustments with shippers. Clerks at larger companies may even control all receiving platform operations, including scheduling of trucks, recording shipments, and handling damaged goods.

Traffic Clerk Responsibilities

Traffic clerks oversee and maintain the records on the destination, weight, and charges on all incoming and outgoing freight. Using a rate chart, they may verify rate charges by comparing the classification of materials, or this task may be automated in larger companies. Information can be scanned or entered manually into a computer for use by the accounting department. Traffic clerks also keep a file of claims for overcharges and for damage to goods in transit.

The Future of Shipping and Receiving

In recent years, methods of handling materials in shipping and receiving have changed significantly. The adoption of equipment such as automatic sorting systems, robots, computer-directed trucks, and programmed data storage and retrieval systems has created largely automated operations. This automation, coupled with the use of hand-held barcode and RFID scanners has increased the productivity of shipping, receiving and traffic clerks.

Training is usually done informally, on site. However, as these occupations become more automated, employees may need longer periods of training to master the use of the equipment and technology. This increase in automation is leading employers to hire those already familiar with computers and other electronic equipment.

In addition to physical challenges required by frequent standing, bending and stretching, clerks may also experience Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), a musculoskeletal disorder that results from overtaxing certain muscle groups by tensing them for excessive time periods, due to overuse or poor posture. The use of wrong tools may also lead to muscle strain and overuse. Professionally designed box cutters can minimize the overuse of arm and shoulder muscles. They also increase efficiency and save time, as well as ensuring the safety of workers and protection of goods.

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party candidate Hana Razga is standing for election in the riding of Edmonton—Leduc. Born in London, England to Czechoslovakian parents, she immigrated to Canada in 1968, having a long career in human resources with the federal government. She is a volunteer for organizations including the Alberta Women’s Shelter, Big Sisters and Match International. She has previously run in campaigns three times provincially for the NDP, and once federally.

Wikinews contacted Hana Razga, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

Created in 2004, the riding consists of southwest Edmonton, the City of Leduc, the Town of Devon, and the surrounding area. Contesting Conservative incumbent James Rajotte are Razga, Valerie Kennedy (Green), and Donna Lynn Smith (Liberal).
