Sweden’s Crown Princess marries long-time boyfriend

Sweden’s first royal wedding since 1976 took place Saturday when Crown Princess Victoria, 32, married her long-time boyfriend and former personal trainer, Daniel Westling, 36. The ceremony took place at Stockholm Cathedral.

Over 1,200 guests, including many rulers, politicians, royals and other dignitaries from across the world, attended the wedding, which cost an estimated 20 million Swedish kronor. Victoria wore a wedding dress with five-metre long train designed by Pär Engsheden. She wore the same crown that her mother, Queen Silvia, wore on her wedding day 34 years previously, also on June 19. Victoria’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, walked Victoria down the aisle, which was deemed untraditional by many. In Sweden, the bride and groom usually walk down the aisle together, emphasising the country’s views on equality. Victoria met with Daniel half-way to the altar, where they exchanged brief kisses, and, to the sounds of the wedding march, made their way to the the silver altar. She was followed by ten bridesmaids. The couple both had tears in their eyes as they said their vows, and apart from fumbling when they exchanged rings, the ceremony went smoothly.

Following the ceremony, the couple headed a fast-paced procession through central Stockholm on a horse-drawn carriage, flanked by police and security. Up to 500,000 people are thought to have lined the streets. They then boarded the Vasaorden, the same royal barge Victoria’s parents used in their wedding, and traveled through Stockholm’s waters, accompanied by flyover of 18 fighter jets near the end of the procession. A wedding banquet followed in the in the Hall of State of the Royal Palace.

Controversy has surrounded the engagement and wedding between the Crown Princess and Westling, a “commoner”. Victoria met Westling as she was recovering from bulemia in 2002. He owned a chain of gymnasiums and was brought in to help bring Victoria back to full health. Westling was raised in a middle-class family in Ockelbo, in central Sweden. His father managed a social services centre, and his mother worked in a post office. When the relationship was made public, Westling was mocked as an outsider and the king was reportedly horrified at the thought of his daughter marrying a “commoner”, even though he did so when he married Silvia. Last year, Westling underwent transplant surgery for a congenital kidney disorder. The Swedish public have been assured that he will be able to have children and that his illness will not be passed on to his offspring.

Westling underwent years of training to prepare for his new role in the royal family, including lessons in etiquette, elocution, and multi-lingual small talk; and a makeover that saw his hair being cropped short, and his plain-looking glasses and clothes being replaced by designer-wear.

Upon marrying the Crown Princess, Westling took his wife’s ducal title and is granted the style “His Royal Highness”. He is now known as HRH Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. He also has his own coat-of-arms and monogram. When Victoria assumes the throne and becomes Queen, Daniel will not become King, but assume a supportive role, similar to that of Prince Phillip, the husband of the United Kingdom’s Queen Elizabeth II.

NTSB announces safety recommendations to be made in aftermath of Comair Flight 5191 disaster

Saturday, June 9, 2007

The American National Transportation Safety Board has announced that it will make new airline safety recommendations. This comes a result of its investigation into the Comair Flight 5191 disaster, in which a Bombardier Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) CRJ-100ER crashed whilst attempting take-off from the wrong runway at Blue Grass Airport, Lexington, killing 49 people and leaving just one survivor. The plane was unable to take off because that runway was too short.

The NTSB has now announced that, on July 26, the date on which the NTSB is to determine the probable cause of the accident, they will issue safety recommendations regarding methods of preventing a recurrence of the disaster.

One of the recommendations will concern developing and implementing a cockpit-based system that will inform pilots when they are in the wrong location. Another will involve rescheduling the workloads of Air Traffic Controllers to ensure they receive more sleep, a request they had previously made in April.

Regarding location warning systems, the FAA has pointed out that they have been working on methods of preventing runway incursions (in which a person, ground vehicle or another aircraft is on the runway when or where it should not be), to which the National Transportation Safety Board chairman Mark Rosenker responded “The FAA is doing a great job testing these systems. The question we have is, when will you finally implement that technology?” FAA Associate Administrator Margaret Gilligan responded by saying that they were currently looking at just such a system, adding “We do have airlines that have committed to put that technology on the flight deck once it’s approved”. The system referred to involves runway signal lights and is currently being tested at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

The NTSB will also look at runway and taxiway markings and the ways they can confuse pilots, as this issue has been identified as a contributing factor in the accident. Rosenker said the NTSB was “very interested” in this area. 140 airports have unclear or confusing markings in the US, but it is not certain if Blue Grass Airport is one of them. However, the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) made a submission to the NTSB stating that they had found that the markings at Blue Grass Airport did not match those on the charts the pilots were using. ALPA went on to recommend greater standardisation of airport runway markings.

Blue Grass Airport responded yesterday by saying that there was nothing wrong with their runway markings, with spokesman Brian Ellestad saying “We have had numerous inspections before and after (the Comair crash) and have had no issues… FAA reiterates that we meet all requirements for signage, markings, lighting, runways and taxiways.”

What To Look For From Food Catering In Aptos

Catering an event is honestly one of the most important parts of an event. When you go to a wedding reception, you might remember the flowers or the outfits. Chances are, you don’t remember much of that, if any. However, you probably do remember when you eat something that you really like. If you think back to weddings you’ve attended, you probably remember the food as well as just about any other aspect. That’s because food is central to how people enjoy something; it’s also something that involves many of the senses. That’s why food catering is so important. You need to get it right if you want your guests to remember your event for a long time.

Authenticity

The authenticity of your caterer is important. When you are looking for food in a particular style, you shouldn’t settle for someone who is tangentially acquainted with it. If you want Mexican food, you should go with someone who is committed to creating authentic Mexican cuisine. You should make sure they are providing the food exactly as it would be if you were in Mexico. Just because you order food catering in Aptos doesn’t mean you don’t deserve true Mexican fare.

Self-Serve

Many people differ on this point. Some people prefer that the caterers serve them, but many people feel self-serve is the best way to go. The caterers cook the food, and you can serve yourself. This gives you the opportunity to get up and mingle with people from other tables, as well as to eat as much as you’d like. You don’t have to keep asking for refills; you can pile your plate high with whatever food you like best.

An authentic food catering cuisine that you serve yourself is a great way to put your event in someone’s mind. They’ll remember the incredible food they ate that day. If they are Mexican, it’s very likely the authenticity of the dishes will stand out.

When you are looking for Mexican food in a particular style, you shouldn’t settle for someone who is tangentially acquainted with it. Contact D’La Colmena for Mexican food.

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

The Guyanese shadow minister of finance Winston Murray has died at the age of 69. Murray died on Monday at Georgetown Public Hospital after collapsing on November 11. His death was announced by Ronald Austin, one of Murray’s colleagues. Murray was also the former Deputy Prime Minister of Guyana.

Murray collapsed while standing in a queue in East Bank Demerara only hours after giving a speech about royalties being taken from mining on Amerindian land. He was then driven to a local hospital by a citizen. He was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was placed on to a life support machine.

President Bharrat Jagdeo paid tribute to Murray. He said “I wish on behalf of the Government of Guyana, and on my own personal behalf, to express our sadness on the passing of the Honourable Winston Murray, Member of Parliament and a former Deputy Prime Minister. Mr. Murray’s passing has robbed this country and especially the National Assembly of an articulate and intelligent debater whose presentations in the House were always of an exceptionally high standard. He was an outstanding Guyanese and fine human being, resolute and firm in his convictions.”

Murray is survived by his wife Marva and their three children.

Homebush Bay, New South Wales —Last night, the Australia men’s national wheelchair basketball team beat Japan 80–49 in their final game of pool play at the Rollers & Gliders World Challenge taking place at at the Sport Centre at the Sydney Olympic Park and are through to the first place match.

The contrast between the two teams was seen in their wheels: almost every Australian player had a four wheeled chair that gave them increased stability while every single Japanese player had three wheels, which gave them great maneuverability. Japan played the aggressor throughout the match, with several players aggressively blocking with wheelchair on wheelchair contact. Both sides were loud, chanting defense, defense, defense when their side was on that side of the court.

The first quarter was closely fought, with Japan racking up 5 by 5:54 left in the first. They successfully took a lead of 17–16 by the end of the first quarter. They were unable to hold the lead, with Australia holding a 40–24 lead at the end of the first half. Australia’s lead at the end of the third was 61–34. While Japan increased their total points in the fourth quarter, they failed to defend against Australia who continued to answer back basket for basket for the game to end 80–49.

Australia plays in the first place match later today. Their London Paralympic campaign starts on August 30 against South Africa.

Signs It Is Time To Hire A Roof Contractor In Nassau County Ny

byAlma Abell

The roof is responsible for protecting everyone inside of a home. As a result, it’s necessary to ensure regular roof inspections are done and that repairs are made, as needed. When it is time to make repairs or to install an entirely new roof, it’s imperative to hire a quality roof contractor in Nassau County NY. Some of the most common signs it is time to hire this professional for roofing service, repair or replacement can be found here.

The Roof is Over 25-Years Old

With proper maintenance, a home’s roof can last for approximately 35 years (or more). However, routine repairs are still needed, and by the time the roof reaches the age of 25 a comprehensive inspection is needed to ensure the roof is still working properly and that there aren’t any serious structural problems. If a homeowner hasn’t taken proper care of their roof, then they will likely need to have it replaced by a roof contractor in Nassau County NY sooner, rather than later.

The Shingles are Missing or Cracked

Just a single bad shingle isn’t a sign that a roof is failing; however, it’s important to have broken or missing shingles fixed in a timely manner. Shingles are responsible for protecting the roof under them. If a homeowner doesn’t replace or repair the ones that are missing as soon as they are found, then water and heat may cause even more damage. It’s a good idea to check the shingles at least four times each year at the start of every new season.

Sunlight Can be Seen in the Attic

A little-known trick to finding roof issues is by going into the attic around noon -; or when the sun is high in the sky. While up there, make sure to look for any sunlight that is coming through the roof. Based on the size, these holes may be a sign of minor leaks or serious structural problems.

Don’t underestimate the impact of roofing problems. They will only get worse as time passes. More information about common roofing problems and when to make repairs can be found by taking the time to contact the staff at North Shore Roofing & Siding Corp.

Toyota recalls up to 1.8 million automobiles

Saturday, January 30, 2010

The automobile manufacturer Toyota has said that it will recall up to 1.8 million cars across Europe, after a problem with the accelerator pedal was discovered.

According to the firm, eight models were affected by the problem — AYGO, iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla, Verso, Avensis, and RAV4 — after it was discovered that the accelerator may become stuck in a depressed position, resulting in uncontrollable speeding.

On Thursday, Toyota said it would recall 1.1 million cars in the US; a day previous, it had suspended eight models from sales. Last week, 2.3 million cars in the US were recalled due to the pedal issues.

The chief executive of Toyota Motor Europe commented on the recall. “We understand that the current situation is creating concerns and we deeply regret it,” said Tadashi Arashima. The firm, however, noted that it wasn’t aware of any accidents resulted by the malfunctioning accelerator pedals, and not many pedal problem incidents were reported in Europe. “The potential accelerator pedal issue only occurs in very rare circumstances,” Arashima added.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, meanwhile, commented that Toyota showrooms could lose as much as US$2.47 billion worth of revenue due to the incident.

“Toyota veterans will likely hear the news with disbelief and keep faith in the brand, but new customers could definitely be scared off,” remarked Robert Rademacher, who is the president of the trade group ZDK, as quoted by Business Week. “This recall has a dimension which we’ve never seen before.”

There are concerns that the problem may result in reduced consumer trust in Toyota. Hans-Peter Wodniok, an analyst for Fairesearch GmbH & Co. in Germany, noted: “If this is a one-time event, huge as it is, Toyota may be forgiven. But if something happens again in the next months and years, they will have gambled away customer trust in Europe as well.”

Analysts for Morgan Stanley, however, said they believed Toyota would not suffer much from the incident. “The company’s actions to correct the situation are timely enough to avoid major brand damage,” they remarked in a note to investors.
