World’s cheapest car launched in India, will go on sale in April

The world’s least expensive car, the Tata Nano, has been launched in India. It will go on sale in April, and will start delivery in July. The automobile costs only 100,000 Indian rupees, or just under US$2,000.

“We are at the gates offering a new form of transportation to the people of India, and later I hope other markets as well,” said the chairman of the auto firm, Ratan Tata, calling the vehicle a “milestone.”

“From the drawing board to its commercial launch, the car has overcome several challenges,” Tata said. “I hope it will provide safe, affordable four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car.

“This was never conceived as the cheapest car, but as providing transport to those people who never owned a car,” Tata said. “Driven mainly by the change in demand that we see elsewhere in the world, we suddenly felt we had a product that could be of considerable interest as a low-cost product in western Europe, eastern Europe, the UK and even the U.S.”

The Tata Nano is a four-door vehicle, and is 3 metres long, 1.5 m wide, and 1.5 m tall. It is equipped with a 33 bhp, 624 cc engine at the rear. No radio, airbags, power steering, or air conditioning are available in the basic model, although upgrades are available. The Nano Europa, a slightly larger European version of the car, is expected in 2011.

According to Ravi Kant, the managing director at Tata Motors, the first 100,000 people to receive a Nano would be chosen from the initial orders by a ballot.

An auto analyst for Bombay’s Angel Broking, Vaishali Jajoo, predicted that the Nano will add only three percent to Tata’s revenues even if it can sell a quarter of a million such cars per annum.

“That doesn’t make a significant difference to the top line,” Jajoo said. “And for the bottom line, it will take five to six years to break even.”

Environmentalists say that the car will exacerbate traffic problems already rife in India, and help increase pollution levels. Tata, however, stated that its vehicle is the least polluting car in the country.

Ted Haggard reaches financial settlement with New Life Church

Sunday, February 11, 2007

The New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado has reached a financial settlement with its founder (and former head of National Association of Evangelicals) pastor Ted Haggard. Haggard stepped aside as senior pastor in the Church in November 2006, when a male prostitute claimed that he had engaged in a three year relationship with Haggard and that the two used methamphetamine.

Haggard, who was publicly critical of homosexuality, has agreed to leave the church he founded and led for two decades with a promise that he will not discuss the scandal, will move out of Colorado Springs, and will not reveal how much his financial settlement is.

On February 4th, Haggard sent an e-mail to New Life members stating, “We all wanted to know why I developed such incongruity in my life. Thankfully, with the tools we gained there, along with the powerful way God has been illuminating his Word and the Holy Spirit has been convicting me and healing me, we now have growing understanding which is giving me some hope for the future.”

Rev. Tim Ralph said, after Haggard completed a three-week counseling program, “He [Haggard] is completely heterosexual.”

However, Mike Jones, the man who had allegedly had a 3 year relationship with Haggard publicly replied, “Give me a break.” Adding, “He’s been performing oral sex on me for three years. You don’t change that in three weeks.” And “Until he’s honest with himself, he’ll never be happy.” Jones is currently writing a book detailing his relationship with Haggard due out in summer 2007.

According to interim senior pastor Ross Parsley, at services on Sunday February 18 the panel will “provide any necessary clarification of (Haggard’s) restoration process and give us a report on the New Life staff.”

Death toll from tsunami in Southeast Asia increases

Posted on June 14, 2018June 14, 2018Categories Uncategorized
Correction — May 8, 2018 This headline incorrectly locates the tsunami in Southeast Asia; it was in the South Pacific, as stated in the lede.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

A tsunami that was generated in the South Pacific by a powerful undersea earthquake has killed at least 110 people, according to authorities.

The majority of the fatalities occurred in Samoa, where rescue workers say at least 84 people were killed. Another 24 people are confirmed dead on American Samoa, while at least seven fatalities have been reported in nearby Tonga.

The US Geological Survey says an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck early Tuesday local time. It generated waves that devastated coastal areas, knocked down buildings and sent cars floating out to sea.

Strong aftershocks followed the initial earthquake, with at least one measuring a magnitude 5.6. Tsunami alerts were issued for the entire South Pacific region but were later canceled. Survivors fled to high ground and stayed there for hours.

Several villages were destroyed on the southern Samoan coast of Upolu, which is also home to many tourist resorts.

During a flight on from Auckland, New Zealand to Apia, Samoa, Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi told reporters he was shocked by the disaster. “So much has gone. So many people are gone. I’m so shocked, so saddened by all the loss.”

“The situation is very bad,” said Marie-Francoise Borel, a spokesperson for the International Red Cross, to the CTV News Channel by telephone. “This massive wave has swept across – it’s destroyed villages, it’s destroyed homes, people are in shock.”

The assistant chief executive of Samoa’s disaster management predicted that the death toll in the country could surpass one hundred, saying that searches for bodies in the region are still ongoing.

“They are still continuing the searches for any missing bodies in the area. Some areas have been flattened and the tsunami had brought a lot of sand onshore, so there have been reports the sand has covered some of the bodies. So we need specialised machines to search for bodies that are buried under the sand,” he said.

The communications head for the International Federation of the Red Cross, Jason Smith, told the Al Jazeera news agency that the Red Cross “[…] is working hard through five evacuation centres to provide people with safe places to stay and access to clean water,” estimating that up to 15,000 people in sixty villages were affected by the tsunami.

At the capital of American Samoa, Pago Pago, the tsunami measured 1.57 meters in height. The superintendent of the National Park of American Samoa Mike Reynolds reported four waves as high as six meters. People who experienced the quake said it was long, lasting from 90 seconds to three minutes.

We’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.

Pago Pago city streets were strewn with overturned vehicles, cars, and debris. Some buildings located only slightly above sea level were completely destroyed by the waves, and power in some locations is not expected to be restored for up to a month. FEMA administrator Craig Fugate said that “we’re focused on bringing in the assistance for people that have been injured, and for the immediate needs of the tens of thousands of survivors down there.”

“The first federal team members are currently en route to American Samoa aboard a Coast Guard plane and will be providing on the ground assessments once they arrive on the island,” Fugate said. “FEMA, who has provisions pre-positioned in a distribution center in Hawaii, is also preparing to send supplies as needed to help meet the immediate needs of the survivors.”

Didi Afuafi, 28, who was riding on a bus in American Samoa when the tsunami struck, described her experiences. “I was scared. I was shocked. All the people on the bus were screaming, crying and trying to call their homes. We couldn’t get on cell phones. The phones just died on us. It was just crazy,” she said. “This is going to be talked about for generations.”

US President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in American Samoa, and has sent federal aid to support local recovery efforts in the US territory.

“My deepest sympathies are with the families who lost loved ones and many people who have been affected by the earthquake and the tsunami,” Obama said. He had earlier pledged in a written statement to give a “swift and aggressive” government response to the disaster.

“I am closely monitoring these tragic events, and have declared a major disaster for American Samoa, which will provide the tools necessary for a full, swift and aggressive response,” Obama said.

During a Wednesday appearance near Washington, D.C., the president said the US was ready to help its “friends” in neighboring Samoa and throughout the region.

In Tonga, seven people were confirmed dead and another three missing, after waves struck Niuatoputapu, a northern island.Acting prime minister Lord Tuita said in a statement that “according to information gathered from Niuatoputapu so far, seven people are confirmed dead, three missing and four with very serious injuries,” Lord Tuita, the acting prime minister, said in a statement. “It is reported that the tsunami did serious damage to the village of Hihifo, which is like the capital of the island.

“The hospital on the island is reported to have suffered major damage; telephone communication has been cut as a result of damage to equipment and facilities on the island; homes and government buildings have been destroyed,” he said.

An airplane was reportedly chartered by Tongan authorities to determine the amount of damage done to Niuatoputapu, but wasn’t able to land.

Pixar Studios animator Bud Luckey, designer of Toy Story’s Woody, dies aged 83

Tuesday, February 27, 2018

On Saturday, William Luckey, also known as Bud Luckey, US animator who designed Pixar Animation Studios’ Toy Story character Sheriff Woody, died in a hospital in Newton, Connecticut; his son Andy Luckey announced the death via a Facebook post. Bud Luckey was 83 years old.

Luckey was born in Billings, Montana on July 28, 1934. He was known for animating counting songs for Sesame Street in collaboration with music of Turk Murphy and lyrics by Donald Hadley. In 1992, Luckey joined Pixar. “He was the fifth animator hired here at Pixar”, Pixar’s animating chief John Lasseter once noted.

He designed Sheriff Woody for Pixar’s first feature film Toy Story which was released in 1995. He also voiced Rick Dicker in Pixar’s 2004 movie The Incredibles and Chuckles the Clown in 2010’s Toy Story 3. Luckey had also designed characters for other Pixar movies including A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc. and Cars. He also voiced Eeyore, the donkey, in 2011’s Disney movie Winnie the Pooh.

In 2004, Bud Luckey was nominated for an Academy Award for Boundin’, a short film he wrote, directed, narrated, and sang. He received the Annie Award for that five-minute short. Luckey retired as an animator in 2008, but kept working as a voice artist until 2014.

Pixar’s official Twitter handle tweeted: “Thank you, Bud Luckey, to infinity and beyond. (July 28, 1934 – February 24, 2018)”. Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3 and Coco, tweeted, “So sad to hear that Bud Luckey passed away today. He voiced Chuckles in Toy Story 3, but that was the least of his many amazing accomplishments. A tweet is not sufficient to sing his praises.”

Apple unveils “Boot Camp” allowing Windows to work on Macs

Posted on June 14, 2018June 14, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 5, 2006

Apple unveiled today a new program called “Boot Camp” which will allow Macintosh users to switch between running Mac OS X and Windows on start-up of their Intel-based Macintosh computer. Shares of the company rose roughly 7% in response to the news.

After Apple switched to Intel processors, enthusiasts and hackers have been trying to install Windows XP on a Mac. Because Macs boot using a faster and more modern system that Windows does not support, booting Windows was a very complicated task.

Mac enthusiasts reportedly achieved this task in mid-March when the website OnMac.net hosted a contest [1]. The winning solution found involved a lengthy process that took both operating systems off and put them both back on. In addition, individual files had to be downloaded and installed, and there were no drivers for many things, most notably games.

Apple fixed both of these problems, with all major drivers included, and the process reportedly now takes less then an hour as compared to 3-9 hours.

The program is available for download, in beta form, from the Apple website. [2] It will be included in the newest Mac OS, called Leopard, once that operating system is released.

Air Conditioning In Tigard Provides Year Round Comfort

byAlma Abell

In a world where the control one has over the many different stimuli we face, the control over the climate and temperature is by far one of the highest ranked niceties. When one is too cold, the heater is turned up or more clothes are put on. But when it comes to handling the heat, the most preferred methodology is to use Air conditioning in Tigard. With the reliance on air conditioning no longer really considered a luxury but more of a requirement (and in some areas, a standard of living), it is quite important to keep the air conditioning unit in the best possible condition. The best way to ensure it is kept at optimum working order is to ensure proper maintenance is preformed regularly. It is no wonder that there are so many companies in existence that offer to check and/or fix your Air conditioning in Tigard, especially with such an importance that is placed on this form of climate control.

The industry standard is to normally check filters every 3 or so months, depending on factors such as usage, pollen/dust count, and etc. It is also recommended to have the refrigerant checked every 6 or so months as needed. Following these best practices will ensure the air conditioning system is running as efficiently as possible, which leads to a considerably more comfortable environment. These are just the basic maintenance checks that are recommended, and a full equipment and service checkup is normally recommended every year or so depending on the area and the amount of usage. Even with the best of maintenance, there comes a time that you cannot prevent the need to replace the air conditioning system.

The question at hand then is when does one know to replace the air conditioning system? The most common signs are higher than normal humidity in the environment where the air conditioning is used, if the system is ten or more year old, rising energy bill costs, inconsistent temperature regulation, and the ever startling excessive noise the system produces. When in doubt, it is always a good practice to contact a professional who specializes in Air conditioning in Tigard, much like one would do for a car or the body itself. Using best practices and some common sense, one can obtain a good control of the climate to which one dwells in, leading to a higher level of happiness.

Richard Roberts takes leave of absence from Oral Roberts University

Posted on June 13, 2018June 13, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Under fire for illegal political and financial wrongdoing, Oral Roberts University president Richard Roberts stepped down from his position and Billy Joe Daugherty was named acting-president. Richard and his wife, Lindsay Roberts, are also members of the ORU Board of Regents, and it is not mentioned if Richard and/or Lindsay stepped down from the board.

On October 12 the plaintiffs of the original lawsuit amended it adding the university’s Board of Regents, which includes George Pearsons, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Michael A. Hammer, John Hagee, Marilyn Hickey, Oral Roberts, Lindsay Roberts, Richard Roberts, Jerry Savelle and Charles Watson to the suit. ORU Board member Kenneth Copeland was Oral Roberts airplane pilot in the 1960s, and current Board chairman, George Pearsons, is married to Copeland’s oldest daughter.

The plaintiffs cited that three days after the original lawsuit was filed, Roberts fired the university’s financial comptroller (who had been employed by ORU for 26 years) and “witnesses have reported voluminous materials and documents were shredded and destroyed, constituting spoilation of evidence.” The lawsuit argued that the Regents were a party to the suit due to negligence in failing to handle the issue as well as allowed a convicted child molester “mentor” students.

Also ORU recently admitted to the press that the IRS had warned ORU against the illegal nature of ORU’s political activity. That political campaign is what the plaintiffs alleged caused the wrongful dismissal of Tim Brooker. While the university declined to offer the IRS’ letters, a spokes-person confirmed the IRS sent two letters in 2006 about the political involvement.

How Investment Property Works

by

Pluto Becks

An investment property refers to that property which is purchased in order to gain returns. Apartment building, single-family dwelling, a vacant lot or a commercial property are the forms of investment property. Real estate is one of an essential type. Not occupying the property by the owner even though in certain instances the owner may occupy a portion of it pertains to an investment property.

The following are examples of investment property.

For undetermined future use the land was held.

Under an operating lease or a vacant building that is to be rented.

Any currently constructed or developed property for future use.

Holding a land for long term appreciation.

Whether bought as a home or as a business venture, buying a property is a lucrative venture. Purchasing a multiple unit is a beginner s approach. While renting out the remaining units, one can live on the other unit. In this way, you can use the rent money you earn from renters for mortgage payments. In the long run you can fully pay the property while enjoying the profit you made from the collected rent at the same.

Any equity you have as a property owner can be used to further finance property purchases. Fair market value of the property less the existing liabilities inclusive of any liens refers to equity. Borrowing against the property equity is a common practice. Rates of the property that will serve as collateral in securing loans are then somewhat competitive. Better rates are offered for those less risk in lending.

Sometimes those bought at a tax sale is an investment property. Property will be auctioned if there is a failure of the owner to honor the property tax payment for certain period of time. A minimum bid as a starter which will be high enough to cover the back taxes and other related expenses incurred during the sale. But at the relatively minimal cost the investors are still allowed to buy the property. When an owner has the opportunity to resell the property at the market value or upgrade it and sell in a premium price is an example of an investment property.

Adding the cash flow from rent or resale and subtracting it at any cost such as taxes, mortgage and insurance is a way of measuring the return of investment. The total amount invested which could be purchase price plus renovations shall then be divided. To get the percentage multiply this by 100. Renting out the property is normally measured on an annual basis but purchasing for resale will be calculated once. Whether the property is worth purchasing or if there are any better deals out there, return of investment calculation will give you an idea.
