Fingerprint Gun Safes Understanding Biometric Technology

A gun is an important tool that can be used for self defense, whether someone is breaking into your home or trying to rob you. However, guns can also be used for sports. Just like every tool, a gun can be used to intentionally harm others or due to ignorance, someone can be harmed accidentally. In order to prevent your gun from being stolen or from a child playing with it, it is recommended that you invest in a fingerprint gun safe. This is no ordinary gun safe as it requires your unique fingerprint to unlock it. This offers further protection from thieves and curious children. In addition to being far more secure than regular gun safes, a fingerprint gun safe is quicker to access in emergencies. You don t have to worry about fumbling around for the key or entering a code. You simply press your finger down and you have access to your gun.

How do fingerprint gun safes work?

These safes function by a technology called biometrics. Biometrics identifies a person based on his/her physical or behavioral characteristics. Hand writing, hand geometry, voice prints, iris structure, and vein structure are all examples of biometric technology. Whereas other security methods, such as passwords and keys, use something you have that can be easily stolen, misplaced, or forgotten, biometrics use who you are to identify you. Besides being very difficult to be lost or forgotten, physical characteristics are very strenuous to impersonate.

Fingerprint gun safes follow a three step process: enrollment, storage, and comparison. Enrollment is the first step you must go through in order to set up your safe. It records basic information about you, such as your name or an identification number. Then, it captures the image of your specific trait (fingerprint) and stores it in the memory. Most fingerprint gun safes give you the option to store multiple fingerprints, if you want to give other people access to the safe.

Storage does not work by storing the complete image, contrary to popular belief. The system analyzes the characteristic and translates it into a code or graph. Some fingerprint gun safes also store this data onto a smart card that you can carry around with you. A smart card looks like a credit card, but it contains an embedded microprocessor inside. A credit card is different, because it uses a magnetic stripe technology that can be easily read, written, deleted, and changed.

The final step, comparison, is self explanatory. When you try to use the system, it compares the trait presented to the one it has stored. If it matches, you are accepted. If it doesn t match, you are rejected.

Biometric systems use a sensor, computer, and software to accomplish the enrollment, storage, and comparison. The sensor detects the characteristic. The computer reads and stores the information. And the software analyzes the characteristic, translating it into a graph or code. The software also performs the comparisons.

How was biometric technology developed?

The source of this technology doesn t have a single source. In fact, the history of biometrics dates back to a form of finger printing being used in China in the 14th century. Explorer Joao de Barros reported that Chinese merchants were stamping palm prints and foot prints on paper with ink, in order to individuate between one another.

In most parts of the world, up until the 1800s, identification relied immensely upon photographic memory. In the 1890s, Alphonse Bertillon, an anthropologist and police desk clerk in Paris, developed a technique of measuring multiple body measurements. Later this technique became known as Bertillonage. He developed this method in order to solve the problem of identifying criminals. Bertillonage was widely used by police authorities, until it was discovered that some people shared the same body measurements.

Later, Richard Edward Henry borrowed the Chinese methods to develop the method of using fingerprints for identification.

During the past three decades, biometric technology has advanced dramatically. Fingerprinting is no longer the sole method of identification. Irises, vein structures, voice, and much more can now be used for identification making the process more accurate. Biometric technology is currently used for legal areas, businesses, and even personal safes. This technology will only continue to advance in the future.

Fingerprint gun safes have adopted biometric technology for improved security and efficiency. Owning a fingerprint gun safe is highly recommended for all gun owners, because your gun can be retrieved much quicker in emergencies, and children and thieves are prevented from laying hands on your weapon.

One of the most difficult phases in raising a child is the one that involves

potty training

. This might come as news to you, but a significant number of parents are so confused regarding the tactics they need to use that they attend sessions from experts to get help. This is because while some children are relatively quicker in learning toilet etiquette, others can take months for the same process. Let’s take a look at some tips that can help you in this regard.

The first important requirement for you, as a parent, in order to carry out

potty training

effectively is the fact that you must know the signs regarding when is your child wanting to use the toilet. These could be in the form of grunting or squatting to any other specific action you have seen your toddler do before he ‘does his business’. Then, as soon as you see him display any such familiar sign, you can start with the necessary actions then and there for the best results.

It’s also a good idea to plan in advance when your child might want to use the toilet. Although I’m not referring to the fact that you can see the future, but I’m sure that you would have an idea of when your child usually feels like going to the toilet. For instance, this could be an hour after waking up, half an hour after having a meal, etc. If you are prepared beforehand, it will surely ensure that you don’t take any incorrect steps for

. This also includes judging whether you would be able to do the procedures all by yourself, or need help.

And lastly, make sure you don’t make the experience too much of a stressful activity. This could lead to not only ignorance on the part of the child (with respect to whatever you are trying to teach him), but he might also learn to altogether avoid the same, which will certainly not help your cause.

Free Traffic Generation Using Article Marketing (Part 3) Article Structure

The structure of your article is almost as important as the content!

You may have the very best information to share in your article but if you fail to present it in a clear logical order, complete with good quality spelling, punctuation and grammar, no one will read it.

The structure of your article can be summarized as follows:

1. Title or headline

2. Introduction

3. Body

4. Conclusion or closing

5. Author or resource box

In this article I will be looking at points 1 to 4. The author or resource box is so important it will be the source of it’s own article latter in the series.

Title or Headline

Obviously this is absolutely critical! You have to catch the readers eye and engage them so they will read your article. Your title must be unique!

You will have done your keyword research using Market Samurai so you know what you will be writing about.

You can check for the uniqueness of your title by searching the article directories for the title you are thinking of. If your first choice is taken, modify your title and keep trying until you find one that you can use that is absolutely unique.

The Introduction

Another critical aspect to your article construction is the opening paragraph or introduction.

You must include something to grab the attention of your reader. This is commonly referred to as a “hook” or “catch”. Other copywriting experts advocate the use of a controversial statement. Some examples of good opening paragraphs would be

Not getting traffic? Here are the 7 secret steps the guru’s don’t want you to know

Do you want to lose 10 pounds in the next 30 days?

Discover 5 little known treatments to stop hair loss!

If you are interested in any of the above, I’m sure you would read on to see what the article is about.

Article Body

The body of your article is probably the least important aspect. Just make sure you have quality information that is displayed in a logical order.

And, of course make sure it is original! Copying someone else’s writing or buying cheap PLR articles and trying to submit them will only cause a lot of frustration when they are rejected by the editors.

The Conclusion or Closing

This is the really exciting part where you bring together your title, your introduction and the body of your article into a 3 -5 sentence summary. This can take a while to master but is the really “punchy” section of your article. Check out the conclusion at the bottom of this article to see what I mean.

Something that people often forget about is spelling, punctuation and grammar. No one is going to read through a poorly written article, with long sentences’ and poor spelling. Use your spelling and punctuation checker from your word processor.

I would also very strongly recommend you read your article from start to finish at least twice to ensure that it “flows” and is in fact easy to read.

Well, there you have it! If you want to generate lots of FREE traffic using article marketing you must ensure that your article is written in a clear and logical path that follows these very simple guidelines. Structure your articles correctly and you will enjoy the benefits that come with hoards of FREE traffic that your articles will generate.

Prerequisites For Successful Mobile Application Branding

Posted on April 25, 2023April 26, 2023Categories Design Agency

Submitted by: Yancy Marry

The rise in the use of mobile devices has led to the subsequent rise in the deployment of mobile apps. Since businesses small and big are going mobile after realizing the immense potential that these software tools have in generating mobility, companies are developing branded mobile apps. The use of branded apps is limited within just one organization and thus they are more effective in promoting the services and products of this enterprise. However, the concept of branded apps is also getting saturated and therefore software development companies now have to keep in mind the below prerequisites before opting for mobile application branding:

1. Keep the interests of target customers in mind The branding techniques should be decided only after analyzing the mobile needs and demands of the target customers. The branding plan should be such as to help build a mobile application that has entertaining features while also serving the mobility purposes of the customer, whether an individual or an enterprise. A successful branding plan is one which helps in marketing the app well.

2. Keep the advantages and disadvantages of mobile OS platforms in mind The branding techniques should be such as will exploit the strengths of the operating system while also keeping in mind the OS platform s weaknesses. The developer needs to understand that every platform behaves in a different manner; that is why the branding techniques should also be such that will help the app function properly no matter what the platform behavior.

3. Test an app thoroughly before submission The developer must make sure that every mobile application submitted for approval of the app store or to a reviewer is tested thoroughly. Any bugs or other forms of malfunctioning should be repaired before submission. If a mobile app freezes frequently or crashes during download, it will lead to destruction of the app s brand image.

4. Branding is dependent on app functionality The current world mobile market is a highly competitive one. This is the reason why clients always search for some unique functionality from their software. According to mobile market analysts, a mobile app brand can survive in the market for a long time only if the application is engaging to its target customers, has a high usability rate, and is updated at regular intervals.

5. Unique marketing leads to better brand promotion Once the features and functions of a mobile application are decided, the software developer must concentrate upon marketing the app in unique ways so as to promote its brand amongst an extended user base. Platforms such as media and social networking tools should be used as an essential element of app branding technique.

6. Design a referable mobile app One quick way to spread word on the brand of your mobile application is to make the software referable to the friends and family members of the target audience. If an app is referable, it will remain in the focus of an extended user base for a longer period of time. This in turn will lead to higher ratings for the software in the market. The more positive an app s rating is, the better it is for spreading awareness of its brand.

To conclude, developers must understand that just building of mobile apps for multiple platforms will not generate revenues. It is establishment of the app brand that will bring success for the designer and users.

Pr Diy Guide: Developing A Media List

Posted on April 23, 2023April 24, 2023Categories Ropes And Cords

The media release is ready and you are excited to get some publicity for your business? So, what’s the next step?

More does not necessarily mean merrier. Not in the development of a media list at least. When it comes to media liaison, the fundamentals must be clear: Not all publicity is created equal. If you think that there isno such thing as bad publicity, or how bad can bad publicity go? Think again.

The purpose of a PR drive is to create positive awareness and buzz. And to do that, there is homework to be done: After crafting themedia release, the next step is to create the media list.

RULE OF THUMB: MEDIA PITCHING? SPAMMING

Media pitchingis not spamming. The last thing anyone wants for their business is for the media or contacts to block their email. We should only know spam as the strangely addictive tinned meat, not a PR tactic.

A media list should be as targeted as possible. The size of the media list should reflect the story angle or related to the industry of the media release, and not vice versa.

It is not possible to create a media release that caters to all media titles. Take for example Brand Inc., when we pitch a story angle, it will likely be about the communications industry since we are a PR agency. However, it could also be on human capital management such as moving up frominternship to executive, empowering femalesandworkplace diversity, or an opinion piece about event PR.

The important part here is to segment and identify target media, understand their interests, and finally engage them. Really, it sounds like dating.

Segment and Identify

Just like the rules of dating, set boundaries. Jokes aside, despite how ‘connected’ the world seems to be, all publications and media outlets have their unique set of target audience segmented on bases of geography, demography and psychographics.

Ideally, these characteristics need to be as close a match as possible to the target audience of one’s communication plan. This is especially tricky when the communications strategy or outreach programme involves different regions, cultures and language. The geographical boundaries, language differences, differences in consumption patterns makes it all the more important to be familiar with the different titles and the market they cater to.

An easy start to develop your media list is by scouring through the internet. Read the content from the different portals. Find editors, contributors, writers or journalists in the areas of your media release. Collate a list of these contacts. The internet may not be exhaustive but it is a good place to start.

PRoTIP: For print media, consider subscribing toMagzter. It is the world’s largest digital newsstand. It may not have all titles especially the small independent ones but with access to more than 4000 titles worldwide, it’s a great bargain!

Know Them and Understand Their Interests

Next, like any meaningful relationship, you have to know your partner and understand his or her interest. The media are not emotionless computer algorithms that put words together, they are human.

The list at this stage is still considered incomplete after identifying the ideal titles and publications. Address, general phone line and email for the news desk can be retrieved and verified effortlessly with a Google search or a phone call. However, it is not enough. It is important to know the people you wish to ‘attract’.

Alongside other great contributions such as #mancrushmonday and #foodporn , social media has madestalking a social norm.it much easier to study someone’s interest. Understanding someone’s pet peeves and proclivities helps one in figuring out ways to approach them with a better chance of striking a conversation and subsequently sharing your idea. LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are great places tostalkstart.

PRoTIP: Do put their social media profile in your media list too. That will help you further when it comes to monitoring.

The Engagement (alt. section header:If you like it then you shoulda put a ring on it)

Having briefly explained the amount of work that goes into the preparation of a media list, it is clear that a substantial investment of time is required to keep the contacts organised and updated on a timely basis. For organisations or individuals lacking the necessary human capital, there are alternatives.

Consider subscribing or acquiring database. Some trusted database sites includeMuckRackandContactable. However, always make sure that the database cover your region of interest.

Of course, another way is to work with atrusted PR agency. Not only will an experienced consultancy have the required contacts, their established network and familiarity with the media landscape will also help with liaising and managing the interests of all parties concerned.

PRoTIP: Before embarking on contacts acquisition, always make sure the supplier has complete information so you will not be paying for generic Google results.

In short, creating a media list can be a painstaking feat or it can also be a piece of cake depending on one’s commitment and resources. Regardless, it is an indelible item on the basic PR checklist forsuccessful PR campaigns.

The Real Value Of Setting Goals

The real value of setting goals

by

Karen Skehel

What is the real value of setting goals?

I believe 100% in the power of setting goals to bring about the results you want to achieve in your life. My beliefs have been reinforced by seeing goals materialise in my clients lives, my familys life as well as in my own life. The beauty of setting goals is that you are never too old or too young to start the process and benefit from the outcome. Whilst I do use coaching within my own family with caution, I have a couple of stories from my own family which are constant reminders to me of the power of goal setting. My left handed, 11 year old, son who had struggled with hand writing speed through out his schooling, set a goal to More than double my hand writing speed. With the goal very firmly in mind, he automatically became motivated to take a d-i-y hand writing programme. He worked on the programme himself with little in the way of reminders from me. His handwriting speed accelerated, and the goal was achieved. For 67 years, or as long as she could use a crayon, my sons grandmother, my mother enjoyed art as a hobby. She had reached a point where she wasnt getting very much from her art. I took her through a goal setting session around her art and she established what she wanted to do: Become an Become an Artist of Excellence. She herself realised she was not spending enough time on her art, and became highly motivated and highly focused. At the age of 68, she applied and was accepted to do a BA Hons Degreee Course , and has since won prizes for her art. In both cases, it was literally the setting of their own goals which led to these outcomes. Goals can be used in the moment to dramatically change the outcome. Today I was playing a one set tennis match. I wasnt playing well, and found myself down 5-2 and 40 love down. Unexpectedly I became inspired by the idea of winning from such a place. Winning from 5-2, and 40 love down became the goal of the moment, which really excited me. I shared my goal with my opponent. My game changed beyond recognition.. I became very focused, and determined whilst at the same time very relaxed. I started to enjoy the match. Instead of loosing many games to love, I was winning games to love. I finally went on to win 7-6. Jon Covey tells his readers to start with the end in mind and when we set a goal we are doing just that. What is the purpose of setting goals? So many people go through their lives like rudder-less ships without clear direction, and are literally subject to storms and winds in the sea of life. Lack of direction can often lead to feelings of stress and anxiety, poor concentration levels, lack of confidence, and living life from a place of being reactive rather than proactive. Not only that, but people without goals often have little determination, patience or tenacity. When you set and achieve a goal, you have an opportunity to pat yourself on the back. Even if you dont achieve exactly what you set out to do, there are likely to be numerous achievements and learnings along the way that you can acknowledge yourself for. All this helps build self esteem. For those who are serious about sport, who are running a business or have a senior role within a company, setting goals is an essential ingredient to success. In spite of this not everyone does it. It may take a conversation with a coach, or business advisor to get them thinking along these lines. Setting goals is not just for sport or work, everyone can benefit from a well-worded goal. Whether you seek a new partner, a better relationship with your existing one, a new job, a new house, more energy, more abundance, improved health, a stress-free life, or something else, the right goal for you, can make all the difference. How do you set goals? Setting goals is a very easy process to do at its simplest level. I spend quite some time designing personalized goals with my clients. I find that it is most effective for people to focus on the top areas of their lives perhaps their business (if that is appropriate) as well as one or two other areas. Choosing the top areas is an important part of the process. I find clients are most motivated if they are working on the areas of their lives which are going to make the greatest difference to them. It is important to bear in mind too, that what may be important today, but not be so key in a few months time. If you find yourself neglecting an area that you have designated top, one reason may be that it is not now so important. If you find this happening, a great tip is to check in with yourself by asking your self how important it is to have this thing. Answer with a score out of 10 where 10 is very important and 0 is not important. There is a balance to be achieved between working on all areas that need attention and just working on one area. Focusing on multiple areas can be distracting leading to little being achieved. Focusing on one area alone, also has its downsides. Not only can it impact negatively on your work/life balance, but an over-focus can lead to what I call attachment to the outcome. You may have experienced a situation where you wanted something so much that it became crucial that you had that thing in your life. It could be the promotion, the new job, the new house, or the new partner. When you find yourself attached to a particular result, you may find that it often gets in the way of your ideal result coming about. One way of letting go of your attachment is to spread your focus by having one or two other key goals. Once you have your top two or three areas, the next step is to set a goal that is going to really inspire you in each of these areas. Defining an inspiring goal is a challenging exercise to do alone. A coach who is experienced in working with clients to define really inspiring goals can really help with this process. One of my clients, a Managing Director of a Design Agency, wanted to work on his business. He wanted to realize its potential, become more financially successful, move forward, and be busy. This led to a goal which was really inspiring for him My business buzzes to the tune of 50K profit per month. This was particularly challenging goal because the business had made a loss for over 9 months. Five months into the coaching and the business is on an upward trend last month profits were just under 50K and we still have a month to go with the coaching. A goal that is hugely inspiring for a client has an energy of its own. I equate it to what happens when a surfer rides a powerful wave. Once on the big wave, all a surfer needs to do is focus and balance and he will be carried to the shore without the need to do much more. (Of course, if he wants to reach the road from the shore, he will need to take some action). One of my clients is a singer. Her long term goal is My first record deal published. Whilst it is hugely inspiring for her, she wanted a goal for the short term. In her case it is to Perform at least 5 concerts with my own material. At the time she set this goal, she hadnt performed any concerts with her own material. Between the time she set this goal and our next meeting, two weeks later, she left the country to be with her sister, who had just had a baby. She wasnt putting any time into getting her concerts. Yet in the meantime, the goal was working for her. Out of the blue she received two invitations to perform concerts with her own material. Sometimes I work with clients who have a gap in a certain area of their lives, but are resistant to setting a goal in that area. Often they are in the place where they dont want to take action on something, in case they dont get what they want. This can be in situations where they have tried many things without success. I have encouraged them to set a goal, with the explicit instruction that they take no action. One of my clients had tendonitis for many years which was impacting on her ability to play and coach tennis. She was resistant to setting a goal around healing her tendonitis she had tried many things and didnt want to do more. I encourage her to set a goal and requested that she take no action. Some months into our coaching relationship, she chose to use some new processes, including visualisation. Her tendonitis healed and she went on to launch a tennis initiative for underpriviledged children: Taking them off the streets and coaching them in tennis. What makes a powerful goal? Like making a cake, there are several ingredients. With a cake, I would say flour is most essential, and with goal setting, it is inspiration that, for me, is most essential. I take great trouble with my clients to ensure that together we define a goal that scores top marks for inspiration. A goal to loose weight became Look fabulous in my black PVC catsuit for a female client and Lean, mean, well oiled machine for a male client. Given that we are working in a coaching alliance, it is when I am as inspired by a goal as my client is, that the magic really starts to fly. For the second most important ingredient, I rate succinctness. A really powerful goal can also double up as a mantra. It is easy to repeat as often as possible and it is easy to remember. Finding a new job can become Love what I do and recovering from a difficult patch can become Sparky, witty Jonny is back!. I also rate challenging as an important ingredient- alongside inspiration. Getting the level of challenge right is key to the success of the goal. Some clients are truly inspired by challenge particular if challenge is amongst their core values. Whereas for others, too much challenge can be counterproductive. A goal that is too challenging can defer a client from taking action. If a client is determined to stay in the this will never happen place then some adjustments are needed: either to their perspective or to the goal. I come from the place where everything thing is possible and encourage my clients to move into that place. Technology has shown us that things that werent possible in the past are now today, and most people have had experiences where they werent initially able to do something, have thought that they never would and have since learnt. A challenging goal doesnt necessarily make it difficult to achieve. An example from my own life. I am naturally someone with an extremely busy mind. In the past, left to its own devices, my mind would mull over both concerns and projects for hours on end during the day and often at night too. It was draining. I wanted to be able to turn my mind off whilst still retaining my innate ability to be creative. This led to a goal which was hugely inspiring for me Be the Zen Master of my on/off switch. The goal started to take on an energy of its own. Coincendentally, I signed up for a spiritual training which encouraged meditation daily. Meditation was something I had practiced for a number of years in the past. I had stopped simply because I wasnt at that time getting results with it. This time things were different. Almost from the moment I started to meditate again, I found that my mind became quiet. I was the Zen master of my on/off switch. A hugely challenging goal was achieved with the minimum of effort. Classical goal setting will encourage you to go for something realistic within a specific time frame. If making a goal realistic means that some of the inspiration is lost then go for the inspiration is what I say. I recently started with a client at the stage of transition from full time employment to running his own business. The goal that truly inspires him is Respected in my outstanding 5 million business. From a standing start, this goal could be considered to be unrealistic within the 6 months of our initial contract. So he has has a signpost goal around his business plan being written and approved by the bank. This gives him a short term focus, whilst the longer term goal is the one that truly excites, inspires and motivates him. In most cases, it makes sense to frame goals in the positive. That said, there are times when a goal which appears to be expressed in the negative, is more motivating to a client than the other way round. I have had a number of clients who came to me with health challenges. One had pain from a hernia and had used drugs to control the symptoms for 7 years. Prior to our setting a goal, she found that no drugs meant intolerable pain levels. She could have set a positive goal such as 100% healthy but instead chose Pain and Drug Free for her goal. These were the words that did it for her. Within one session, she had given up her drugs this time without pain and has maintained her drug and pain free state ever since. Classical goal setting will encourage you to go for goals that are measureable. I would 100% agree with that. Not only is a measure motivational, but both yourself and your coach will know how close or how far you are from achieving the goal, at any point in time. With business and sports goals, it is fairly easy to incorporate a measure. A desire to grow and sustain a business became My sustainable 30K per month Business Building Business for one of my clients. Which brings me to what happens if you dont achieve the goal that you originally set. This may be because you changed your mind. What you set out to achieve initially, no longer holds the same interest for you. For the more spiritually minded, it can be useful to include a caveat to your goal setting, particularly when you find yourself hugely attached to the outcome. This can take the form of a simple sentence which can be added to a goal e.g. Achieve my goal .or whatever the grand design has in store for me. Often, it is only a matter of time until the goal you set becomes yours. There is likely to be many learnings and achievements on your path from the moment you set your goals. I recommend that you keep a note of your learnings and achievements since, in my experience, human beings are particularly good at forgetting, as well as dismissing their achievements. However valuable goals setting is, and whatever the outcome, I find it empowering to remember that Life is a journey, not a destination. (Who was it that said that?!) If your goals arent 100% inspiring you, or you are currently lacking some clarity on what next, Karen Skehel is offering all Resources readers the chance to participate in a goal-setting tele-workshop. The precious metal of gold has fascinated humans for thousands of years. But how do we actually get it out of the ground? Let’s take a look at the most common ways to mine gold.

There are two main gold mining methods, one is called ‘placer” and the other is ‘vein” mining. And another type of mining is when gold is collected as a by-product in the mining of other metals.

Placer Mining

Placer mining is practiced when the metal is found in unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel from which the gold can be easily separated because of its high density. The sand and gravel suspended in moving water. Much heavier metal sinks to bottom and is separated by hand.

The simplest method of placer mining is panning. Here the miner swirls the mixture in a pan rapidly enough to carry the water and most of the gravel and sand over the edge while the gold remains on bottom. This was the classic method used by the Forty-Niners during the California gold rush of 1849 and has been immortalized in story, art, and song.

A more efficient form of placer mining uses a sluice box, a U-shaped trough with a gentle slope and transverse bars firmly attached to the trough bottom.

The bars — extending from side to side — catch the heaviest particles and prevent them from washing down the slope.

Sand and gravel are placed in the high end, the gate to a water supply is opened, and the lighter material is washed through the sluice box and out the lower end. The materials are caught behind the bars and are gleaned to recover gold.

Another variation of placer mining is called hydraulic mining. A very strong stream of water is directed at natural sand and gravel banks washing away the lighter materials. The suspended materials treated as if they were in giant sluice box.

Currently the most important placer technique is dredging. A huge shovel of several cubic meters capacity lifts the unconsolidated sand and gravel from soil and mud and the placer process starts.

Vein Mining

Vein, or lode mining is the most important of gold recovery methods. Each ounce of gold recovered requires the processing of about 100,000 ounces of ore. Much gold is deposited in rock veins and this method accounts for more than half world’s total gold production. Gold in veins may be of microscopic particle size, in nuggets or sheets, or in gold compounds. The ore requires extensive extraction and refining.

One-third of all gold is produced as a by-product of copper, lead, and zinc production. Copper must be electrolytically refined to raise its purity from 99% to the more than 99.99% that is required for many industrial purposes.

In the refining process an anode of impure copper is electrolyzed in a bath in which the cathode is a very thin sheet of highly refined copper. This process

creates anode sludge which contains gold in quantities sufficient to make its recovery profitable. One-third of all gold is obtained from such by-products.

Silver and platinum are also recovered from the copper anode sludge in quantities large enough to more than pay for the total refining process.

Extraction, Refining and Uses of Gold

Ore from the gold mine is first crushed in rod or ball mills. This process reduces the ore to a powdery substance. The gold is then extracted by amalgamation with mercury or by placer procedures. Approx. 70% is recovered at this point.

The remainder is then dissolved in dilute solutions of sodium cyanide or calcium cyanide. The addition of metallic zinc to these solutions causes metallic gold to precipitate. This precipitate is refined by smelting and the purification is completed by electrolysis. The sludge produced in this process will also contain commercial quantities of silver, platinum, osmium, and other rare-earth metals.

Gold is one of the first two or three metals, along with copper and silver that was used by humans in these metals’ elemental states. Because of its poor chemical reactivity it was found uncombined and required no knowledge of refining. Gold was used in decorative arts before 9000 BC. And civilizations prized gold for its beauty.

A principal use of gold today is as a currency reserve. For centuries gold was used directly as currency along with silver. During the 19th century, gold assumed the role as the sole basis of the currencies of most nations. Paper money was directly convertible into gold.

World War I, however, disrupted the ‘gold-standard” system. The original gold standard was gradually abandoned. The United States stopped minting gold coinage in 1934 and the dollar eventually emerged as the principal unit of international monetary transactions.

Since the 1970s, gold has been bought and sold on the world market, with widely fluctuating prices. Today gold reserves maintain only a very indirect relationship with currency values. However, as gold has declined as a currency reserve, its use in industrial processes has risen. On top of this, its beauty and workability continue to give gold an important role in the world’s jewelry industry.

New Jersey’s state legislature has passed a bill that will legalize medicinal marijuana for patients with chronic disease. The state’s outgoing Governor, Jon Corzine, said that he will sign the bill before he leaves office next week. Upon passage of the bill, New Jersey will become the 14th state in the nation to permit medical marijuana.

Patients with a prescription would be able to purchase up to 2 ounces (56.7 grams) of cannabis per month. The bill specifies that only certain chronic diseases are eligible, ALS, AIDS, cancer, muscular dystrophy, and multiple sclerosis. The bill specifically bans the unlicensed growing of cannabis, driving under the influence of the drug, and only allows six licensed dispensaries in the state.

One of the supporters of the bill, Assemblyman Reed Gusciora said that “I truly believe this will become a model for other states because it balances the compassionate use of medical marijuana while limiting the number of ailments that a physician can prescribe it for”.

Opponents of the bill point to California where they say that cannabis is too loosely regulated. Governor-elect Chris Christie said that “I think we all see what’s happened in California,” he said. “It’s gotten completely out of control.”

Oil spill hits Australia’s Sunshine coastline

A small, basic map of affected areas in the 2009 Queensland oil spill.

200,000 litres of oil leaked into waters off the coast of Brisbane from the Pacific Adventurer when their fuel tanks were damaged in rough seas on Wednesday. The figure is about ten times higher than the original estimate of twenty thousand litres of oil. The devastating diesel oil spill has spread along 60 kilometres (37 miles) of the Queensland coast. In addition, 31 containers with 620 tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertiliser flew overboard during the violent storm.

Questions are being asked why the Hong Kong cargo ship was out in seas with nine meter waves caused by Cyclone Hamish, a Category 5 tropical cyclone, as well as why the fertiliser containers were not properly secured. One of the overboard containers ruptured the hull of the Pacific Adventurer, causing between 30 to 100 tonnes of oil to spew from the severely damaged ship.

If the ammonium nitrate mixes with the heavy oil, an explosion could occur. None of the containers have been recovered. Some of these may float, but it is believed that they may have sunk which then may cause algal blooms.

Disaster zones have been declared at Bribie and Moreton Islands, and along the Sunshine coast.

The vessel’s owner, Swire Shipping, reported that a second leak began on Friday, when the ship began listing after docking at Hamilton for repairs. “As full soundings of the vessel’s tanks were being taken at the port to determine how much oil had leaked from the vessel, a small quantity of fuel oil escaped from the Pacific Adventurer,” it stated. The ship was brought upright, and a recovery vessel was used to suck up the oil from the water. The leak produced a 500m-long oil slick down the Brisbane River. Booms were placed around this oil spill so that a skimmer could clean up the second spill.

Swire Shipping could face clean up costs of AU$100,000 a day as well as fines up to AU$1.5million (US$977,000; £703,000) if found guilty of environmental breaches or negligence.

Sunshine Coast beaches are slowly starting to be reopened. The beach of Mooloolaba was still closed following reports of burning sensations from swimmers. 12 beaches remain closed; however, 13 have been reopened.

Over 300 state government and council workers are using buckets, rakes and spades in the clean up effort. Sunshine Coast Mayor Bob Abbott says the majority will be gone by Sunday afternoon. The full environmental impact on wildlife is not yet known. One turtle and seven pelicans have been found covered in oil.

There are concerns that the drinking water of Moreton Island is at risk, as the island uses water from the underground water table near the oil spill site.

“Every bucketload of contaminated sand has to be removed from the island by barge, and each bucketload from a front-end loader weighs about one tonne. It’s just an impossible task,” said Mr Trevor Hassard of the Tangalooma Dolphin Education Centre.

The commercial fishing industry has suffered from the incident. Trawlers won’t resume operations until Sunday evening, and any catches will be tested for human consumption.
