Woman returns home with Christmas turkey, a month after setting out

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

A Scottish woman who set out before Christmas to purchase a turkey finally made it home on Monday, after being cut off by snow for a month. Kay Ure left the Lighthouse Keeper’s cottage on Cape Wrath, at the very northwest tip of Great Britain, in December. She was heading to Inverness on a shopping trip.

However on her return journey heavy snow and ice prevented her husband, John, from travelling the last 11 miles to pick her up. She was forced to wait a month in a friend’s caravan, before the weather improved and the couple could finally be reunited.

They were separated not just for Christmas and New Year, but also for Mr Ure’s 58th birthday. With no fresh supplies, he was reduced to celebrating with a tin of baked beans. He also ran out of coal, and had to feed the couple’s six springer spaniels on emergency army rations.

“It’s the first time we’ve been separated”, said Mr Ure in December. “We’ve been snowed in here for three weeks before, so we are well used to it and it’s quite nice to get a bit of peace and quiet.”

Lawanna Brock Talks About Lateral Violence

Years ago Lawanna Brock went into nursing to become a nurse anesthetist or practitioner. She was young and dumb and, while she did not care for bedside nursing, she had an intense love for medicine and helping people. She wishes to share with anyone considering this profession the cold hard facts about what it is really like. Healthcare is not about helping the patient anymore, it is about competing for jobs, position, and power (all which equals money), the realistic conflict theory in play. Lawanna is referring to something that is worse than cyberbullying or racial taunting. This ends careers. It is called lateral violence.

According to the USLegal.com, lateral violence occurs when people, who are in a situation to achieve dominance, turn on each other rather than confront the problem that oppresses them both. Lateral violence occurs when groups or individuals internalize feelings such as anger and rage, and manifest their feelings through behaviors such as gossip, jealousy, putdowns and blaming. Some turn to board reporting and chat site ridiculing to cause harm to their victims. Many call in sick, develop depression, and are simply miserable at their place of employment. According to Heather World of nurse.com, it is the violence that ends careers.

Lawanna Brock was a victim of lateral violence and after careful research, she found that it is a growing problem among nurses and in the healthcare setting. Her husband (retired after 25 years in the medical profession) told her that it is was because nurses and most healthcare workers are women and women tend to be envious and vindictive toward each other. This is less publicized than physical violence but it is more widespread. Researcher Martha Griffin PhD reports that people who feel oppressed commit acts of passive aggression. She found that as many as 50% of nurses new to the filed leave their first position due to lateral violence. SIXTY PERCENT. That is a serious problem. What is more, her research also found that 20% of registered nurses leave the profession within three years to escape hostility. To escape hostility!? Where is the management during all this?

Patricia Rowell, Ph.D researched this behavior and concluded that the agency must employ a zero tolerance policy related to lateral violence. Sadly, most organization leaders do not want to rock the boat and allow this behavior to continue. Managers, administrators, and even doctors do not want to be a part of the workplace politics and turn their head when they become aware someone is the victim of lateral violence. Many large organizations have implemented programs regarding lateral violence, and their administrators acknowledge the problem exists. In rural areas and in small offices and workplace settings, it is not commonly acknowledged as a problem. If you are looking for a profession where you will be accepted and treated fairly, do not enter the healthcare field. Two words: Lateral Violence.

A list of behaviors associated with lateral violence:

* Backstabbing, gossiping

* Belittling gestures (deliberate rolling of eyes, folding arms, staring straight ahead or “through” when communication is attempted)

* Constant criticism, scapegoating, fault-finding

* Elitist attitudes regarding work area, education, experience

* Humiliation

* Ignoring, isolation, segregation, silent treatment

* Inequitable assignments

* Inflammatory angry outbursts, impatience

* Insults, ridicule; patronizing, or condescending language or gestures

* Intimidation, threats

* Judging a person s work unjustly or in an offending manne

* Making excessive demands

* Sabotage, undermining

* Unfair evaluations of work

* Unwarranted criticism sarcasm

* Withholding information or support

Britain’s Royal Windsor Castle to get hydro-electric power plant

Posted on February 12, 2020February 13, 2020Categories Uncategorized

Monday, July 25, 2005

Windsor Castle, one of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom’s official residences, is to get a hydro-electric power scheme.

The £1 million project will consist of a series of under-water turbines to be installed at Romney Weir in the nearby River Thames. The system will generate 200kW, enough to meet approximately one third of the castle’s electricity needs.

The electricity from the four turbines will not be sold into the local electricity grid, but will instead be directly connected to Windsor Castle’s electrical system. It will save 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every year.

The scheme was announced after it gained planning permission from the local council, the plans having been submitted in February of last year. A feasability study will now be conducted, with construction scheduled to start next year.

The Windsor Castle is not the only environmentally-friendly Royal scheme. A borehole beneath Buckingham Palace provides cold water for air-conditioning and the Duke of Edinburgh’s taxi runs on liquid petroleum gas.

Adele and David Bowie each win five Grammys

Posted on February 12, 2020February 13, 2020Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

On Sunday, British singer Adele won five Grammy Awards at the 59th Grammy Awards event in Los Angeles. David Bowie posthumously won five Grammys.

Adele won Song of the Year, Best Pop Solo and Record of the Year for her song Hello, and Album of the Year for her album 25, becoming the first singer to win the Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year twice.

David Bowie was nominated in five categories — three for his album Blackstar in Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and Best Rock Performance; and two for his song Blackstar, Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance. Days after releasing his 25th album, Blackstar, Bowie passed away in January 2016, due to cancer. Before Blackstar, Bowie won a Grammy for his music video Jazzin’ for Blue Jean, and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006, never winning the award in a major category before.

In the event, singer Bruno Mars paid tribute to music icon Prince, replicating style, costumes, and guitar of Prince’s. Minneapolis-based funk band The Time, who had performed with Prince, paid tribute to the singer who passed away in April at the age of 57. Adele, in her performance, paid tribute to George Michael. While performing, Adele stopped, swore, and restarted. She later apologised, saying “I am sorry for swearing and I am sorry for starting again, I can’t mess this up for him[…] I am sorry, I can’t.” British pop singer George Michael died on Christmas Day of heart failure at the age of 53.

Adele was in tears while receiving Grammy for the Album of the Year. In her acceptance speech, she said, “But I can’t possibly accept this award. And I’m very humbled and I’m very grateful and gracious. But my artist of my life is Beyoncé. And this album to me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, is just so monumental. Beyoncé, it’s so monumental. And so well thought out, and so beautiful and soul-baring and we all got to see another side to you that you don’t always let us see. And we appreciate that. And all us artists here, we fucking adore you. You are our light. And the way that you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is empowering. And you make them stand up for themselves. And I love you.” Other albums in the pool, besides 25 and Lemonade, were Justin Bieber’s Purpose, Drake’s Views, and A Sailor’s Guide To Earth by Sturgill Simpson.

Earlier, while receiving award for the Record of the Year, Adele said, “My dream and my idol is Queen Bee [Beyoncé], and I adore you and you move my soul every single day and you have done for nearly seventeen years”. Other songs nominated in the category were Beyoncé’s Formation, Work by Rihanna, 7 Years by Lukas Graham, and Stressed Out by TWENTY ØNE PILØTS.

Beyoncé received the largest number of nominations for the event — nine — but she won only two. Her album Lemonade won Best Urban Contemporary Album and her song Formation won Best Music Video.

Chance The Rapper won Best New Artist, and claimed Best Rap Performance for No Problem and Best Rap Album for Coloring Book. Chance’s songs were never sold, and were available for free on streaming services.

The new host James Corden took a pratfall on the stairs while entering. The duo TWENTY ØNE PILØTS won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song Stressed Out. Upon announcement, they removed their pants to accept the award. Sharing an incident of watching Grammys before the duo was famous, Tyler Joseph said Josh Dun proposed if they were to receive a Grammy, they would receive it in their underpants as they were in underpants watching the award ceremony at the time. In his acceptance speech, he said, “I want everyone who’s watching at home to know that you could be next. So watch out, because anyone from anywhere can do anything.”

Paramedics protest outside New South Wales parliament

Posted on February 9, 2020February 10, 2020Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Paramedics employed by the Ambulance Service of New South Wales in Australia marched on the New South Wales parliament today. They called for the Government to sack Ambulance Service of New South Wales CEO Greg Rochford, hire 300 additional ambulance officers and 60 patient transport officers. Paramedics gave the Government 48 hours to agree to the proposed staffing levels or face industrial action.

“We are currently at the same levels of staffing that we had in 2002 and these not withstanding, also there’s been an increase in workload of 5 per cent per year every year since then,” said Health Services Union general secretary Michael Williamson.

The union also called for chief executive Greg Roachford and other senior management to be sacked over what has been described as a culture of bullying.

UN sponsored ceasefire in Israel-Lebanon begins

Posted on February 9, 2020February 10, 2020Categories Uncategorized

Monday, August 14, 2006

At 5:00 a.m. GMT, a UN sponsored ceasefire between the IDF and Hezbollah took effect. Outside of isolated small arms fire, both sides seem to be abiding by it. Although fighting took place until just minutes before the ceasefire, no air strikes or rocket attacks have been reported since.

Israel has said that it will maintain ground forces in southern Lebanon until they are relieved by the peace-keeping force. Israel also said it will maintain the blockade so that Hezbollah cannot rearm. Hezbollah on the other hand insisted on its right to fight Israeli soldiers on Lebanese soil.

The international peace-keeping force may take 10 days to assemble, says the UN. It is expected to be headed up by French troops, complemented primarily by troops from Italy, which has volunteered up to 3,000 soldiers. Portugal, Finland and Spain will also consider deployments. Australia, Canada, Malaysia and Indonesia have been mentioned by the UN as sources of non-EU forces.

Within an hour of the ceasefire cars started heading south in Lebanon. Within hours thousands of Lebanese sought to return to their homes crowding roads, even as bulldozers were still trying to fill bomb craters. The Lebanese army was working hard to coordinate traffic and make-shift road repair.

“I’m so excited to see my home. I’d heard news it was completely destroyed, but even if there’s one room intact, I will stay there with my children,” said Sanaa Ayyad, who had with her a baby and two young boys.

The conflict has been going on for 39 days and has cost over 1,200 people their lives. In Lebanon, around 1,100 people have been killed, mostly civilians. 154 Israelis, including 114 soldiers, have been killed in the conflict.
