Thai anti-government leaders escape capture

In a new setback to the Thai government’s efforts to ease mounting political tensions, protest leaders escaped from their hotel Friday after security forces arrived to arrest them.

One, Arisman Pongruangrong, climbed down three floors using a rope, and was rushed away by supporters thronging the building. The police say Arisman led recent rallies at the national parliament, the election commission, and satellite transmission bases.

Officials earlier Friday said the government is preparing to arrest people linked to violent clashes with security forces last Saturday.

Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban, Thai security chief, announced the raid on the hotel as it was unfolding, saying that a Special Forces unit had closed in around a downtown Bangkok hotel.

“As I am speaking, the government’s special team is surrounding the SC Park Hotel, where we have learned that there are terrorists and some of their leaders hiding,” Suthep said.

A spokesman for the governing Democrat Party, Baranuj Smuthararaks, says arrest warrants have been issued for those suspected of being involved in the violence. Some of the suspects have been identified from photos taken during the clashes.

“Right now the government’s focusing on issuing warrants for acts of terrorism by the people who fortunately have been captured in action [in photos] by both the local and international media,” he said.

According to the New York Times, as many as five protest leaders had been staying at the same hotel as Pongruangrong. Those leaders later appeared together at a protest rally in Bangkok.

“I would like to thank all of the people who saved me,” Arisman said. “You have saved democracy.”The government says armed men infiltrated protester ranks Saturday and fired on troops trying to disperse a rally. Five soldiers and 19 protesters died during the clashes.

Thailand is facing its most severe political crisis in almost 20 years. The anti-government movement, led by the United Democratic Front against Dictatorship or UDD, demands that the government step down and call fresh elections.

UDD supporters, known as red shirts, have held protests in Bangkok for more than a month.

The UDD largely supports former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in a coup in 2006 and remains overseas to avoid a jail sentence for corruption. Mr. Thaksin has strong support among the rural and urban poor, as well among some sections of the army and police.

Some parties in the governing coalition want to set a clear time frame for elections to ease tensions. But the government says it will only call elections once the political situation has cooled.

Angkor Temples

Contrary to common belief, Angkor is not only one, but hundreds of temples. The Angkor Temple Complex was built between the 9th and 14th century AD at Angkor. This region served as the capital of the Khmer Empire in Cambodia. Built for King Suryavarman II in the 12th century, Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument ever built. Dedicated to the Hindu Supreme God Vishnu, the Angkor Wat Temple is today one of the wonders of the world and one of the major reasoms people visit Siem Reap in Cambodia. Angkor Wat has five lotus-shaped towers, a larger central tower, and four smaller surrounding towers. These represent the five peaks of Mount Meru, which according to Hindu belief is the abode of Hindu deities and the centre of the continent Jambudwipa. Built between the 9th and 14th centuries AD during the height of Khmer power to be the administrative and religious center of that vast kingdom, the many temples that make up the complex, including Angkor Wat, reveal a rich and interesting religious and cultural history. It is one of the wonders of the world and the first point of call for most people during their travel to Siem Reap. To get the most out of the visit, it is best to read up in advance so you can better appreciate the relevance of the carvings and structures. To make the most of your visit to Angkor Wat, many people find it useful to have a local guide who will explain the intricacies of the temples. A good guide book can also be handy and you can bring one from back home or purchase one at one of the local markets or just outside the temple gates. An entry pass at the entrance booths amounting to US$20 for one day, US$40 for 3 days, and US$60 for 7 days. For more information, please also see our Angkor temples page or contact us directly for a tailor made tour to see the spectacular Angkor Wat and the magnificent temples of Angkor. Apsara Dancing Show Apsaras, according to Hindu mythology and legends, are celestial dancers. Their figurines can be found in many Angkorian temples. The traditional Apsara Dances have been adapted to represent Apsaras and are a slow yet graceful form of art. These can be seen at many restaurants in Siem Reap. You can enquire about these performances with your local guide. Cultural and Traditional Crafts The presence of Angkor Wat has helped Siem Reap become the cultural centre of Cambodia. The Old Market has on offer a variety of souvenirs and handicrafts, including beautiful traditional silverwork. Traditional silks, baskets, carvings and musical instruments are also part of Cambodian handicrafts. Shadow Puppets: The House of Peace The House of Peace is located 3 kilometres from the town towards the airport. This is a workshop which trains artisans to produce the traditional Khmer shadow puppets, which are made from leather. Shadow puppetry is an art form which is found across South-east Asia and Cambodia. La Noria Restaurant and Bayon Restaurant organise regular shows of shadow puppetry. See these restaurants listed in Siem Reap Restaurants.

2005/01/08 Tsunami aid donations in 2005 deductible for 2004 in the U.S.

Posted on February 6, 2022February 7, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, January 8, 2005

U.S. citizens donating in 2005 to help tsunami victims may write off their donations on their 2004 tax returns, thanks to a bill quickly passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate on a voice vote, and signed into law by president George W. Bush.

Without the new law, contributors would have waited until 2006 and their 2005 tax returns to be able to write off their charitable donations. The law is intended to promote donating towards the tsunami relief effort.

CBS News reports Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy is estimating approximately 322 million U.S. dollars in goods and cash have been donated by private U.S. citizens and corporations, in addition to the 350 million that was promised by the government.

An AP/ISOS poll has found three in ten U.S. citizens have donated to Tsunami Aid organizations.

A Guide To Buying Cd/Dvd Duplicators?

Posted on February 4, 2022February 5, 2022Categories Bbq Products And Accessories

Submitted by: Constantin Kioulafas

So many brands, so many features, how do you choose the best CD/DVD duplicator for your needs? Well, there are certain principles that you can follow when buying a CD or DVD/CD Duplicator that will help. What follows is a brief guide discussing the key elements to consider.

A CD DVD duplicator can really make your duplication jobs faster and more organized. Efficiency in data management comes naturally with a duplicator. So when you decide to buy a duplicator, there are a few key points that you need to keep in mind before choosing the brand and make of the unit, that will best suit your requirements.

While price is always an important factor, keep in mind that when you pay for something, you get matching quality and performance. You need to invest in a duplicator that also delivers on performance as well as price.

Buying a CD DVD duplicator is no different to buying any other type of gadget and you are influenced by factors like the brand and manufacturer, after sales support, performance, reliability and of course the price as we ve already mentioned. The three key factors apart from price, that most influence the decision when buying a duplicator, are the design, configuration, and customer service and support.

The Design

Design is a key reason many of us buy most things, and duplicators are no exception. An attractive design adds class to your office or work set up. But design covers a broad range of things, a lot more than just how something looks. If a duplicator is not well designed, it may be difficult or awkward to operate. So design also plays a role in terms of functionality. Materials used are another consideration. There s nothing like a nice finish, but will it last, especially under extreme use and conditions. Does the case offer adequate ventilation?

There is also the design of any software used, and the interface with the duplicator. Many duplicators can be operated remotely from a PC, while others only provide a keypad and LCD display, so a good and uncomplicated interface is crucial for quick and easy operation.

Configuration

The duplicator configuration determines things like how many drives your duplicator has, which directly affects how quickly you can make copies. This may not be an issue with small runs, but for larger jobs, this can knock off a considerable amount of time. Drive configurations start from 1 drive systems and can reach as many as 15 drives. Some systems can be daisy chained together to form even larger configurations.

If you need to duplicate a large number of different images (an image in duplicator terms is the complete contents of one disc, be it a movie or a collection of files used in a product presentation), then consider getting a duplicator with a built in hard disk drive. Images are stored on the hard disk and called up for duplication when required.

Customer service and support

The best duplicator can become a nightmare if after sales and service is poor or non-existent. You may not need help or support with your duplicator every time you use it, but when the need arises, it is important and good to know that the manufacturer is there to help out. So always buy CD DVD duplicators from well known resellers and manufacturers that offer comprehensive after sales support.

Keeping these key elements in mind next time you are considering buying a duplicator will hopefully help you make the most appropriate choice for you duplication needs.

Eight men and several Spinka charities charged with tax fraud in Los Angeles

Posted on February 2, 2022February 3, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Monday, December 24, 2007

Eight men and five Brookyln-based Spinka charitable organizations have been charged with tax fraud and money laundering. Six have been arrested, and two are still at large.

The men charged are Naftali Tzi Weisz, 59, a Grand Rabbi from Brooklyn; Gabbai Moseh E. Zigelman, 60, also from Brooklyn and Weisz’ assistant; Yaacov Zeivald, 43, of Valley Village; Yosef Nachum Naiman, 55, of Los Angeles; Alan Jay Friedman, 43, of Los Angeles; Joseph Roth, 66, an international accounts manager at a bank in Israel from Tel Aviv; diamond merchant Moshe Arie Lazar, 60; and Jacob Ivan Kantor, 71, an attorney from Tel Aviv. The first six were arrested last Wednesday, and four of them have been released on bail. The FBI believes Lazar to be in Israel. Kantor is also believed to be in Israel according to other reports.

The charitiable organizations named as defendants in the charges are Yeshiva Imrei Yosef, Yeshivath Spinka, Central Rabbinical Seminary, Machne Sva Rotzohn, and Mesivta Imrei Yosef Spinka. The FBI alleges that these charities issued fraudulent receipts for bogus charitable contributions and were the beneficiaries of fees charged for transfers of funds as part of a money laundering conspiracy.

By a 37-count grand jury indictment that was unsealed on Wednesday morning, Weisz and Zigelman are charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the Internal Revenue Service and other crimes, 19 counts of mail fraud, one money laundering conspiracy count, 11 counts of international money laundering, and one count of operating an illegal money remitting business. Zigelman is in addition charged with two counts of aiding in the preparation of fraudulent income tax returns. Zeivald, Lazar, Naiman, and Friedman are charged in the main conspiracy count and with operating an illegal money remitting business. Zeivald is in addition charged with one count of mail fraud. Roth is charged in both conspiracy counts; several mail fraud counts; and several international money laundering counts. Kantor is charged in both of the conspiracy counts and several international money laundering counts.

The charges laid are that over a period of 10 years the conspirators solicited USD8.7 million in contributions to these charitable organizations, promising to secretly refund to the donors up to 95%, allowing the donors to claim the full amounts of the donations as tax deductions on their federal income tax returns. According to the FBI, this was done in two ways: Some donors received cash payments through an underground money transfer network involving Zeivald, Naiman, Friedman, and Lazar, some of whom operated businesses in and around the Los Angeles jewelry district. Other donors were reimbursed via loans made from the United States branch of an Israeli bank, organized by Roth and Kantor and secured on funds secretly held in that bank in Israel, to which the donations had been sent via wire transfer.

Several of the Brooklyn charitable organizations are schools. One such is Yeshiva Imrei Yosef, a private Orthodox Jewish school for boys in grades PK–12 with 312 students, which is one of 5000 such organizations approved for charitable donations by the Jewish Community Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco. The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles draws a parallel between these charges and the creation of bogus schools in the case of New Square, quoting Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University, as saying “I think that in Eastern Europe, especially where corruption was rampant, it was very common for Jews to engage in, shall we say, ‘extra-legal activities’ when they believed they were doing so not for their personal gain but for the good of the community or for some higher purpose.”

His observation is that defrauding a corrupt government is part of the culture that has sometimes been carried in to the United States, and that people justify it when they believe that the money is going towards Jewish education. “I think the idea is that Jewish education is so important and so expensive and the folks say to themselves, ‘we’re forced to pay for public education which we don’t use’, and they manage to sometimes justify in their own minds these kinds of activities that are for the sake of a holy end.”

Sarna states that violating the law is not condoned by Jewish communities in the U.S., a sentiment that has been echoed in reactions from the Los Angeles Jewish community, such as that by Rabbi Meyer H. May, president of the Rabbinical Council of California: “One thing is clear: The Orthodox community deplores any attempt to defraud the government of the United States, and there is no excuse for it, and there’s no rationalizations that are acceptable. […] It’s against the Torah and it’s against our moral foundation. At the same time, regarding these specific individuals, they should be allowed to have a fair trial, as everyone is innocent until proven guilty.”

The FBI’s press release contains a similar reminder of the presumption of innocence.

Calls by the New York Times were unable to obtain any comments on the case from the defendants.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Posted on February 1, 2022February 2, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

UK Serious Fraud Office to investigate MG Rover collapse

Posted on January 31, 2022February 1, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, July 5, 2009

The United Kingdom’s Serious Fraud Office is to launch an investigation into the collapse of car manufacturer MG Rover. The move follows the conclusion of a four-year enquiry started immediately after the firm became insolvent.

The group of four who owned MG Rover — John Towers, Nick Stephenson, Peter Beale and John Edwards — have been accused of asset stripping. The quartet, known as the Phoenix Four, paid a symbolic £10 (approximately €15) for Rover in 2000. At that time the company received an interest-free loan from former owner BMW for £427 million (approximately €700 million) and came with a large amount of unsold stock.

Between then and Rover’s April 2005 bankruptcy, by which time there were unpaid debts of £1 billion (approximately €1.5 billion), the Phoenix Four had removed an estimated £40 million worth of assets including pensions and salaries. An enquiry was launched by ministers that was expected to take a year, but the final report was not delivered to business secretary Lord Mandelson until three weeks ago.

The government used taxpayer’s money to fund a £6 million loan to MG Rover and attempted to negotiate a deal with a Chinese company, but these efforts failed. MG Rover’s collapse caused the loss of an estimated 15,000 jobs, including with various suppliers. A former MG Rover factory does still build a small number of MG sports cars in Longbridge by Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, who bought most of the designs.

The Phoenix Four released a statement criticising the criminal investigation. “There has never been any suggestion of improper conduct by the directors and this was confirmed in a report by the administrators PWC six months after they took over the running of the company. Four years on, any suggestion [of] another further investigation is frankly ridiculous and smacks of kicking this issue into the long grass. If the government has been so concerned to get to the heart of the matter why has it flatly refused more than 30 requests under the Freedom of Information Act which would have revealed correspondence and documents the directors believe would have shed some light on the government’s role in the affair?”

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Posted on January 30, 2022January 31, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.
