Ulster Volunteer Force announces it will put weapons “beyond reach”

The Northern Ireland loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) intends to end its decade-long campaign of violence and terror and will disarm, making it the first loyalist paramilitary to do so.

All recruitment has ceased; military training has ceased; targeting has ceased and all intelligence rendered obsolete; all active service units have been de-activated; all ordinance has been put beyond reach.

However, unlike the Provisional Irish Republican Army, the UVF will not fully decommission weapons. Instead the illegal organization will put weapons “beyond reach” of ordinary members in secure caches only known to UVF leadership.

The group, considered a terrorist group in both the United States and United Kingdom issued a statement, read by Gusty Spence, a founding member of the UVF, which stated that “as of 12 midnight, Thursday 3 May 2007, the Ulster Volunteer Force and Red Hand Commando will assume a non-military, civilianised, role.”

It also added, “All recruitment has ceased; military training has ceased; targeting has ceased and all intelligence rendered obsolete; all active service units have been deactivated; all ordinance has been put beyond reach and the IICD instructed accordingly.”

However, according to the Independent International Commission on Decommissioning (IICD), this does not meet the requirements set out in government legislature. Although it welcomed the news of disarmament, the Commission said it was “concerned by [the UVF’s] intention to deal with their arms without the involvement of the IICD”.

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern suggested the UVF work with the Commission “with a view to full decommissioning”. Sinn Fein welcomed the news of UVF’s disarmament. “This is a welcome statement if it signals a recognition of the new political reality where there is no room for armed or violent actions,” said John O’Dowd of Sinn Fein.

The British Prime Minister’s office expressed cautious optimism over the UVF announcement. “We need to see how today’s announcement is translated into action,” said a spokesman for Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The group has been on a cease-fire since 1994 in response to the IRA ceasefire. The group was responsible for 427 deaths during the violent period in Northern Ireland known as the “the Troubles” some of which was notoriously violent, which included a group of members known as the “Shankill Butchers” who committed a series of grisly murders of Catholics in Belfast and the Dublin and Monaghan bombings, which claimed the life of 33 victims and was the deadliest terrorist incident during the Troubles to happen in the Republic of Ireland.

Monday, September 2, 2013

Nelson Mandela has left hospital to return to his home in Johannesburg, in a critical condition, South African officials said on Sunday.

The 95-year-old anti-apartheid leader and former South African president has spent nearly three months in hospital for treatment of a recurring lung infection and has returned to his residence in Johannesburg where he will continue to recover.

A statement from the office of current South African president Jacob Zuma confirmed Mandela homecoming:

“His teams of doctors are convinced that he will receive the same level of intensive care at his Houghton home that he received in Pretoria.”

“His home has been reconfigured to allow him to receive intensive care there. The health care personal providing care at his home are the very same who provided care to him in hospital.”

Several ambulances and TV crews gathered outside Mandela’s home in the Houghton suburb of Johannesburg on Sunday, where well-wishers gathered to pray for his recovery.

Mandela’s last public appearance was at the 2010 football World Cup, held in South Africa.

Hope fades for families of trapped Mexican miners

Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Almost 600 desperate family members and others remained camped outside the Pasta de Conchos coal mine near San Juan de Sabinas, in the northern Mexico state of Coahuila where 65 Mexican miners were trapped by a gas explosion around 2:30 a.m. (0830 GMT) Sunday. Some are threatening to storm the mine while soldiers are trying to keep them calm and rescuers continue to pick through the rock and debris with hand tools, fearing that any power equipment might set off another explosion.

The local newspaper’s headline caused panic by quoting one of over a dozen surviving miners who were close enough to the exits to escape: “They are surely dead,” (La Prensa de Monclova). However, Arturo Vilchis, Civil Protection Director, refused to speculate on the condition of the miners, while Javier de la Fuente, an engineering contractor with mine owner Grupo México S.A. de C.V. also tried to hold out some hope.

The men were each supposed to be carrying oxygen tanks, each with a six hour supply, and there’s some hope that they could reach other oxygen supply tanks, or that some air might be reaching them through the ventilation shafts into which rescuers have been pumping more oxygen since shortly after the explosion.

Juan Rebolledo, vice president of international affairs for Grupo México, assured onlookers that U.S. mining experts were on the way, and officials at the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration have confirmed that they’ve sent a specialized equipment truck and several mining experts which should arrive at the mine site on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Consuelo Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the National Miners’ Union, called for an investigation into Grupo México’s responsibility for the disaster. Pedro Camarillo, a federal labor official, said nothing unusual was found during a routine evaluation in early February.

History Of Dell Computers

By Adriana Noton

Dell is a well-known computer company that has been around for over 20 years. Most people recognize the name and thousands of people buy new Dell products every day. However a lot of people don’t know the history behind Dell or how it became a Fortune 500 company in such a short amount of time. There are lots of small businesses across the country but somehow Dell went from a small company founded by a man who went from college student with a dream to a multi-million dollar owner with a very successful business.

Michael Dell is the founder of the famous computer company. He started his business while he was still in college with only $1,000 for start-up costs. His idea was that he could make computers from stock IBM components by dealing with the customers directly. If he had a better understanding of what people wanted he could make customized computers to meet their needs better than the manufacturers that were selling computers. His business did well on and after his parents supported his idea with $300,000 it really started to take off.

Just one year after he started his business, Michael Dell released a computer that he had designed himself. It sold on the market for $795 and quickly became a popular computer. It was advertised in computer magazines in such a way that people could choose from various options when they ordered their computer. This was one of the first really customizable computers that had ever been sold. While people had the option of buying the parts to make one it was more convenient to order it through Dell, which was then known as PC’s Limited. It was also cheaper than buying retail. A few other companies had used this same concept but it was Dell that really made it successful. They made over $73 million dollars by using that model in their first year.

Dell got its current name just a couple of years after their business took off. The year after the name was changed the Dell Corporation had to make some adjustments in order to compensate for the fact that there were a limited number of retailers willing and able to sell their products. They began building on-site service centers where customers could go and walkthrough the computer customizing process. Over the course of a few years these service centers became international.

As technology and the Internet grew, Dell was able to create website where people could purchase computers online from the comfort of their homes. They had the step-by-step process available so that people could see which parts they could upgrade which made customizing their computers even easier. They also began to dive into the world of TVs and other entertainment technologies. Everything Dell produced was available on their website. They also decided to purchase the gaming computer company called Alienware although they let it continue to work under its own management. Over the years Dell has made various changes to what customers could upgrade and how they could personalize their computers and it’s for that reason that Dell is one of the top 50 Fortune 500 companies.

About the Author: Earn reward miles when you buy Dell computers online. You can even earn reward miles on purchases including clothing, jewelry and Dell laptops. Online Shopping has never been easier or more rewarding.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Posted on July 17, 2021July 18, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

FDA issues proposed rules requiring calorie content on menus

Posted on July 15, 2021July 16, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, April 3, 2011

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued proposed calorie labeling rules requiring most retail food vendors to display the calorie counts in items on their menus and menu boards. The proposed rules, issued Friday and expected to be finalized in 2012, would apply to most restaurants, snack bars, vending machines, coffee shops, drive-through restaurants, and convenience and grocery stores.

The US Congress required the rules in the health-care reform law passed in 2010. The rules proposed by the FDA must undergo a public comment period before they are finalized and take effect, said Michael R. Taylor, Deputy Director for Foods at the FDA.

The proposed regulations pertain to businesses devoting more than 50 percent of their floor space to the sale of food or that consider themselves restaurants, specifically food-selling chains with at least 20 stores nationally. Included are candy stores, bakeries, and ice-cream parlors.

The FDA’s proposed guidelines specify that chains post the calorie counts of foods and drinks on menus and menu boards or next to the food item, such as at a salad bar. The menu is to prominently exhibit the calorie content of each item in a way customers can see easily, giving them the same information packaged foods prepared at home currently provide. The information must be displayed in “clear and conspicuous” print and colors.

Giving consumers clear nutritional information makes it easier for them to choose healthier options that can help fight obesity and make us all healthier.

Many cities and states have passed laws requiring calorie labeling on menus, beginning with New York City in 2008. California implemented a similar law in January, although many counties are waiting for the release of the federal guidelines before they begin enforcement. Some fast-food chains there, such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, are displaying calorie counts on menus in some of their stores.

The rules are intended to curb the national obesity epidemic since, according to FDA estimates, one third of the calories people consume yearly come from food eaten out. In a statement issued yesterday, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services said, “Giving consumers clear nutritional information makes it easier for them to choose healthier options that can help fight obesity and make us all healthier.”

Excluded from the rules are businesses whose primary product is not food sales but that sell it, such as bowling alleys, airports and airplanes, amusement parks, hotels and movie theaters. Alcohol is also excluded.

Wikinews interviews Victor Kline, leader of newly registered The New Liberals party in Australia

Posted on July 14, 2021July 15, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

On June 3, the New Liberals were officially registered as a political party by the Australian Electoral Commission, enabling them to run candidates for federal elections in the country.

While the party has been in existence for over a year, with member Karen Porter having run in the 2020 Eden-Monaro by-election as an independent candidate, the party applied for registration on December 16.

The party has already faced legal barriers for registration. It shares the “liberal” moniker with Australia’s governing Liberal Party, who called the New Liberals a “cynical attempt to piggyback” on their own name, even presenting a survey from Crosby Textor of over 2000 voters that claimed over two-thirds of voters could percieve a connection between the parties, in an attempt to prevent the party’s registration. Ultimately, the Australian Electoral Commission decided that, on balance, the name of the New Liberals was “sufficiently visually and aurally distinct” from the Liberal Party’s name, and registered the party.

Wikinews spoke with the New Liberals’ party leader Victor Kline via email about the plans of the New Liberals and their policies and values.

Knob Handle Variety Of Materials}

Knob Handle variety of materials

by

Teres DifeoHandles are attachments fixed on access portals such as doors and windows to facilitate pulling open the door or window to effect entry or exit. In many cases, the handle may simply be a knob which is attached to a locking device and helps to also lock the door simultaneously when it is closed. Knobs are essentially different in shape from handles as they are rounded whereas handles are linear in shape. Knobs and handles can be fixed at different points on the door. Some doors have the handle very high up on the door, to ensure that small children cannot access them, while others may have the handle lower down.

In many circumstances, knobs are more difficult to operate, especially for elderly and differently-abled people. They do not provide a firm grip and hence they could be slippery for an elderly person or someone with special needs to operate. In such cases, a lever-functioned handle would be more appropriate.

Some door handles are recessed into the body of the door as in automobile doors. This provides an aesthetically pleasing effect. However for more high-traffic doors, these recessed handles are not recommended, as their spring-lock mechanism may not take much wear and tear. Folding handles are good for balcony-doors and outside windows as they fold back into the frame when not in use.

Knobs and handles come in a variety of materials. Almost all metals can be used but if the knob or handle is to be facing outwards, it needs to be weather resistant, be able to repel rust and corrosion and also provide a good grip when wet. In such cases, highly polished handles may not be suitable, and metal handles may be textured, carved or decoratively embellished to provide some roughness. Brass and bronze knobs and handles provide a classic touch, while plastic handles can look stylish and contemporary.

Knurled or patterned knobs provide a good grip for turning, while lobed knobs are useful for lightweight turning operations. Domed knobs are installed on vertical surfaces and they help water to run off easily when exposed to rain or wet weather. Plastic handles are very effective when there is a need for a tough, non-conducting material which will not rust or corrode or react to aggressive chemicals. Ball-shaped knobs look decorative on drawers and cabinets especially when they’re made of ceramic, painted wood or polished metals. T-shaped knobs are useful in moving levers and gas tanks.

Depending on your specific requirements, you can purchase the correct type of knobs and handles from your local hardware store or order them on-line from manufacturers. In many circumstances, knobs are more difficult to operate, especially for elderly and differently-abled people. They do not provide a firm grip and hence they could be slippery for an elderly person or someone with special needs to operate. In such cases, a lever-functioned handle would be more appropriate.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Posted on July 14, 2021July 15, 2021Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.
