Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic condition causing benign tumors (neurofibromas) to grow along certain types of nerves and, in addition, it can affect the development of bones or skin. There are several variants of the disease but type 1 and type 2 NF account for the vast majority of cases.

The disease manifestations can vary from very mild to severe. Major symptoms include growths on and under the skin; skin pigmentations called café au lait spots in type 1; acoustic nerve tumors and consequent hearing loss in type 2. Growths can affect nearly all parts of the body, and pressure on nearby structures can cause a wide variety of complications. There is a small risk that the tumors transform into malignant cancerous lesions.

NF is one of the most common single-gene human diseases; around 1 in 2,500-4,000 live births are affected by NF-1, whereas NF-2 occurs in about 1 in 50,000-120,000. Both type 1 and 2 are autosomal dominant conditions, meaning that only one copy of the mutated gene need be inherited to pass the disorder. A child of a parent with neurofibromatosis and an unaffected parent will have a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder. The gene responsible for NF-1 and possibly NF-2 is thought to function as a tumor suppressor gene.

In most cases of neurofibromatosis 1, patients can live normal and productive lives. In about 25-40% of patients there is an associated learning disability with or without ADHD. In some cases of neurofibromatosis 2, the damage to nearby vital structures, such as the cranial nerves and the brainstem, can be life-threatening. When tumors are causing pain or disfiguration, surgery is thus far the only proven beneficial treatment option.

Reggie Bibbs is a 43-year-old-man living in Houston, Texas. Mr Bibbs was born with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis (NF), which causes him to develop tumors on his body (see infobox on the right). NF can be a subtle disease, but in Bibbs’ case it has left him with a disfigured face and deformed leg. But he is happy with the way he looks, and doesn’t want to change his appearance to please other people. He has launched a successful campaign entitled “Just Ask”, and that’s just what Wikinews did in a video-interview.

The interview was prepared by Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent with the help of Bertalan Meskó (who has a popular genetics and web 2.0 blog). Their questions were sent to a close friend of Mr. Bibbs, Lou Congelio, who kindly conducted the interview.

Assaf Ramon, the pilot of an Israeli F-16 fighter jet, was killed on Sunday after his plane crashed in the West Bank, according to officials.

Ramon was the eldest son of Israel’s astronaut Ilan Ramon, who was one of six people killed in the February 2003 Columbia space shuttle explosion.

The pilot’s plane smashed into a hilly area near the city of Hebron, the Israeli military said, adding that the accident happened during a routine part of an advanced pilot course. Search and rescue have been dispatched to the area.

It was not immediately known what caused the jet to crash.

Mo Ibrahim: Some African countries too small to continue to exist independently

Posted on March 25, 2018March 25, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Sudanese-born British mobile communications tycoon Mo Ibrahim told a news conference in Tanzania today that some African countries are too small to keep functioning independently, and need to integrate in order to survive.

Ibrahim, speaking at the beginning of a two-day-long event encouraging good governance on the continent, commented that “some of our countries, and I’m really sorry to say this, are just not viable….We need scale and we need that now — not tomorrow, the next year or the year after.”

“Intra-African trade is 4–5 percent of our international trade. Why? This is unacceptable, unviable, and people need to stand up and say this,” he continued. “Who are we to think that we can have 53 tiny little countries and be ready to compete with China, India, Europe, the Americans? It is a fallacy.”

“We are poor, we are hungry, we are going without. Something is drastically wrong. I think we have the right to ask our leaders: are they really serious?” he said.

A reporter for the BBC suggested that the tycoon was talking about economic, not political, integration.

Ibrahim also surprised many African leaders when he did not give out his Ibrahim Prize in October, worth US$5 million. The prize is given to former sub-Saharan African leaders whose governance has been deemed good. Prize judges didn’t say why it wasn’t given out this year. Former presidents Joaquim Chissano of Mozambique and Festus Mogae of Botswana both have received the prize in the past.

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Spanish word “tortuga” means “turtle.” But in the wake of the New Orleans disaster, the USS Tortuga is helping other animals.

For nearly two weeks now, sailors from Tortuga’s repair division have devoted much of their time during this disaster relief operation to ensure the health and comfort of displaced pets.

September 4th, just after the ship moored to a pier at Naval Support Activity (NSA) New Orleans, HT1(SW) Mark Hanley and DC1(SW) Antony Graves gathered materials from the repair shop on board to construct a kennel along the levee. The facility they made soon became a popular shelter for the homeless animals of the storm.

Tortuga’s search and rescue team brought aboard more than 170 displaced citizens during this past week, providing them with food, water, medical aid and a place to sleep.

Tortuga’s makeshift kennel, named ‘Camp Milo & Otis,’ has housed as many as 90 dogs, eight cats, one rabbit, one guinea pig, a pair of parakeets and a flightless pigeon during the past week of operation.

Currently, there are 14 dogs that remain in Tortuga’s care, as many of the other pets have been taken to animal shelters in the area for extra medical attention, or been claimed by their owners upon arrival to Tortuga. The pets that Tortuga has registered have all been in the hands of professional veterinarians assigned to provide expert medical attention to the members of Camp Milo & Otis.

Dr. Kelly Crowdis and Dr. Latina Gambles, both from Tuskegee University and Christian Veterinary Missions, have treated many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment and broken bones at the Camp during the past week.

“The animals were bathed and assessed before physical interaction with the sailors,” said Dr. Crowdis. “They’ve been given immunizations, antibiotics and medications based on their medical needs.”

Dr. Crowdis added, “What these sailors have done on their own has been such a heart-warming thing. As an animal lover, it is so comforting to know that everyone cares about the animals in addition to the human lives rescued from the storm. I’m very pleased with these guys for taking the initiative to construct this kennel.”

Graves, Hanley and other members of their division have consistently bathed, fed, walked and given special attention to every dog, every day.

“We play with them,” said Hanley. “We take them out of their kennels to give them attention every day. And we’ll continue to do that for as long as our ship’s mission keeps us here.”

September 11th, the Agricultural Center at Louisiana State University donated supplies to “Camp Milo & Otis” in support of Tortuga’s efforts to help the animal victims.

”We got medical supplies, bowls, food, cages, leashes, collars, toys, cat litter and cleaning supplies from these people yesterday,” said Graves. “It’s nice to know that so many people out there have heard about what our ship is doing, and responded by donating so much to support us the best they can.”

A photo gallery of unclaimed pets is on the USS Tortuga’s web site.

As part of disaster plans, the Department of Homeland Security has also deployed Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams to provide medical care to pets and livestock, as well as provide any needed veterinary medical care for search and rescue dogs.

There are over 3,850 animals being sheltered around the state. If someone is looking for a pet they should contact their nearest Humane Society or go online to http://www.petfinder.org// . More information is also available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu//.

How To Give Your Patio Italian Country Style

Posted on March 25, 2018March 25, 2018Categories Kitchen Home Improvement

By Lee Dobbins

With the warm weather approaching, its time to look at adding some style to your patio and why not think about the informal and elegant appeal of the Italian country decorating style? Using old pottery, and chippy painted items along with earthtones and subtle splashes of color you can provide a unique and interesting look in any patio. Add some great container plants and flowers and you can have the feeling of the Tuscan countryside no matter where your patio is.

To pull together your design theme you need some great outdoor dcor. Choose accessoreis which offer a simple, country design. You want to include lots of antique looking pots for potted plants – either cement or ones that have a look of plaster either plain or with designs. Think about planting some interesting arrangements that include plants that spike up as well as ones the drape over the side of the pot.

Another thing to consider that will add interest to your patio is a water feature. This can be a simple lavabo that hangs on the wall of your home or fence or you can put a great fountain in right in the middle of the patio. Choose something that has an old world look and this will add a lot of ambiance to your Italian designed patio.

Next you need to choose your outdoor furniture. Of course, you want to pick something that is practical but you also want to keep the look of the Italian countryside in mind. These days, you can find outdoor furniture in many styles and I suggest you use a faux wrought iron style with scrolly design and a glass topped table.

Decorating with outdoor carpeting to your patio is able to help pull off the interior decorating scheme. When you are looking at floor covering for your design theme, ensure you shop for something that compliments the decorating theme in addition to the colors in the room. Look at providing unassuming waterproof mats in subtle colors which work with the other colors in the decorating approach.

When bringing the style of Italian country decorating to your outdoor patio, you want to be sure the surrounding area is lush with plants. Plant flowers as well as tall grasses and trees in the ground and include plants in planters right on the patio to add to the ambiance of your patio.

Living In A Glass World

Posted on March 24, 2018February 2, 2019Categories Public Relations

By Rodney Jansen

This article will probably make a few video production/editing company’s cringe. It certainly wouldn’t be an observation they would be writing about on their blog.

like you, I have been mesmerized by the latest television shows that fall in the category of ‘reality shows’ where the audience gets to ease drop in on someone’s personal life, business life etc. This trend seems to be tapping in to a basic truth about people’s nature.

WE LIKE TO KNOW THE REAL STORY!

In a media world where everything is edited, photoshoped, bleeped etc. people are looking for something REAL. They want transparency.

Gone are the days where you can hide behind your company’s corporate image perfectly designed by advertising agencies; or if you happen to be a public figure, shielded behind your image team who is constantly doing ‘damage control.’

I am reminded of the story of the congressman who assaulted the college students on a Washington sidewalk when asked a question. The students flip cam was on and recorded the entire confrontation and it went viral within a few hours. The congressman failed to realize that we are now a living in a very different world; a world where transparency is no longer an option. It’s time to throw out the term ‘living in a glass house’.

It’s now more like we are ‘living in a glass world’.

With the information age and the internet news travels in almost Real time. Now everyone is a reporter because of phones equipped with cameras and video capabilities. Twitter and Facebook are quickly becoming the micro newsrooms of our day.

There is no stopping this trend. It is the new way that we are interacting and communicating.

If you are a business or public figure, it’s time that you learn the new rules of engagement. People want to see the good, the bad, and the ugly.

If you are a hotel that is advertising a sparkling swimming pool as one of your amenities, Then it had better be sparkling. Otherwise, someone is going to go to the internet and right a negative review or ‘Tweet’ their experience on Twitter.

I you are willing to take my advice, it is to just keep it real.

One person who has figured out this new trend is a social media guru by the name of Gary Vay-ner-chuk. He is the founder of a video blog called ‘Wine Library TV’ that he launched on YouTube in 2006. It became a phenomenal success for several reasons.

The one that I wish to point out for this article is his ability to connect with his audience in a real way. When the camera is turned on, you get it all. No bleeps, no edits.

His show creates a feeling like Gary is in your living room and you are sitting around the dining room table talking shooting the bull. It’s funny, it’s educational, it’s real.

The next moguls of our new media world will be the ones that learn the value of keeping it real. You can’t hide behind your mistakes; besides people want to see those too. Embrace this new trend. Make it work for you.

One way you can do this is by creating video blogs of what your business is doing. This is a new trend that you are seeing now all over social sites like YouTube. But remember, Leave the cameras rolling, even if you have to sneeze.

Australian Muslim killed by her hijab in go-carting accident

Posted on March 24, 2018March 24, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, April 11, 2010

A Muslim woman has been killed by her religious apparel during a freak go-cart accident in Port Stephens, Australia. Mariam Dadoun, a 26-year-old mother, was out with her two children and husband enjoying their vacation time. While visiting Port Stephens Go-Karts, the vehicle had twisted her flowing hijab in the wheel’s axle.

Peter Fox of Port Stephens Local Area Command said, “the scarf was pulled across her throat […] from one side of the body to the other side”.

Medical professionals on the scene succeeded in reviving Dadoun. However, she shortly died of severe neck and throat injuries after being airlifted in a Westpac rescue helicopter to the nearby John Hunter Hospital.

The track has since been closed pending further investigation and a lack of proper licensing. The go-cart used in the accident has similarly been taken away for forensic examination by police authorities.

The spokesman of the New South Wales division of WorkCover, an organization tasked with ensuring the safety of amusement devices, commented that, “[Go-carts are] classified as amusement devices that have to be registered for safety purposes”. One go-cart on the property was found to lack proper guarding while the other had not been certified for use.

Sharon and Scott Taylor were waiting in line with their children at the time. Scott said that the injuries were clearly severe as the paramedics began helping her. He added, “Her clothing had wrapped around her neck”. “The cart hit the wall and stopped and she was just slumped over,” remarked Sharon.

Dadoun was the mother of two children, aged six and four. According to her aunt, she was a devoted caregiver and had been always willing to help others. More specifically, she remarked, “If anyone needed help, she wouldn’t say no. She did a lot for everybody – for her friends, her family, her relatives.” Strongly said, “You can’t describe Mariam. She was the best.”

Dr. Joseph Merlino on sexuality, insanity, Freud, fetishes and apathy

Posted on March 24, 2018March 24, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Friday, October 5, 2007

You may not know Joseph Merlino, but he knows about you and what makes you function. He knows what turns you on and he knows whether it is a problem for you. Merlino, who is the psychiatry adviser to the New York Daily News, is one of the more accomplished psychiatrists in his field and he is the Senior Editor of the forthcoming book, Freud at 150: 21st Century Essays on a Man of Genius. The battle over interpreting Freud’s legacy still rages, a testament to the father of psychoanalysis and his continuing impact today.

On the eve of the book’s publication, Wikinews reporter David Shankbone went to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to discuss the past and future of Freud and psychoanalysis with Dr. Merlino, one of the preeminent modern psychoanalysts. Shankbone took the opportunity to ask about what insanity is, discuss aberrant urges, reflect upon sadomasochism (“I’m not considered an expert in that field,” laughed Dr. Merlino), and the hegemony of heterosexuality.

Dr. Merlino posits that absent structural, biochemical or physiological defects, insanity and pathology are relative and in flux with the changing culture of which you are a part. So it is possible to be sane and insane all in one day if, for instance, you are gay and fly from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia.
