Fire strikes Slovak Academy of Sciences

The Virology Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) in Bratislava was severely damaged by fire. The flames reportedly reached as high as one hundred meters. The fire most likely started from the gas tank used for oxy-fuel welding during the building’s restoration process, SAS speaker Viera Rosová said.

Firefighters from all Bratislava fire-stations took part in the fire-fighting operation. The situation was complicated by dense smoke, necessitating the use of gas masks.

Thanks to a quick evacuation of SAS employees and construction workers, none were injured. However, some equipment of the top-level scientific facility was damaged and various research projects will be affected as well, Rosová admitted. The “software unit containing information of incalculable value” was rescued in time, reports say.

There is no danger of toxic spills or leak of viruses. The micro-biotic organisms studied in the institute are safely stored and infected animals were not held in this building. The institute owns about two thousand animals. The virology samples will be destroyed as the coolers went out of service after the power supply was cut for security reasons during fire-fighting. The SAS vice-chairman Albert Beier estimated the value of the cooler boxes to be close to two million Euros. “They often contain a life-long work of our researchers,” he added.

An Ice Cube Distributor In Long Island, Ny Is Helpful When Entertaining Guests During Hot Weather

Anyone who needs a lot of ice cubes on a regular basis may become a customer of an ice cube distributor in Long Island, NY if buying a large ice-making machine is not warranted. Otherwise, this person must resort to routinely buying big bags of ice from a grocery or convenience store, which can actually become inconvenient. In fact, those stores are likely getting their bags of ice cubes from one of these distributors. They generally sell to customers who only need an occasional bag of ice, such as for pouring in coolers to keep beverage cans cold at a party.

Entertainment at the Summer Home

People who have lots of company at a lovely summer home throughout the warm months may want to buy ice on a regular basis from an ice cube distributor in Long Island, NY in order to save money when compared to buying from a convenience store. They may host gatherings every couple of weeks with relatives, friends, or colleagues who appreciate being able to relax at the residence on the island and get away from the city.

Hot Summer Weather

Bags of ice are useful for the bartender of the household who adds them to mixed drinks and soft drinks. Ice cubes in coolers surround cans of beer and soda as well as bottles of water. A lot of ice can be used up when the weather is hot and steamy. It’s true that this part of the country doesn’t deal with the ongoing excessive heat of southern states, but Long Island still can experience many hot days in the summer.

Pure Processing

A distributor such as Long Island Ice & Fuel takes pride in using a pure processing method that keeps the ice cubes crystal clear. Making cubes in a less precise manner can result in cloudiness or white areas that detract from the ice’s appearance even though the cubes are still safe to use and taste just fine. The drinks look more attractive with ice of this great clarity, which is especially important for an amateur bartender who takes great pride in crafting tasty mixed beverages for guests.

Elizabeth II annuls Fred Goodwin knighthood

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

Queen Elizabeth II, the British monarch, has today withdrawn and annulled a knighthood given to Fred Goodwin in 2004, heeding the advice given to her by a forfeiture committee. Goodwin is the former chief executive at the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) and was awarded his knighthood by the British government of the time for services to banking. The committee concluded “that widespread concerns about Fred Goodwin’s decision meant that the retention of a knighthood for services to banking could not be sustained.”

Goodwin was chief executive of RBS when they purchased ABN AMRO, a Netherlands bank, in 2007. The British government subsequently bailed out RBS for £45 billion, amidst the late-2000s financial crisis.

British prime minister David Cameron stated about the annulment: “The proper process has been followed and I think we’ve ended up with the right decision.” Cameron and Ed Miliband, UK Leader of the Opposition, both believed Goodwin’s knighthood should be removed. Miliband called it “the start of the change we need in our boardrooms.”

Liberal Democrat leader and Deputy PM Nick Clegg considered it to be the “right decision”. “[A]ppropriate” was the word George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer used to describe it. “RBS came to symbolise everything that went wrong in the British economy in the last decade,” Osborne stated. Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland stated the title was given “for services to banking which could not therefore be sustained”, calling the decision “correct”.

Goodwin does not have the right to appeal against the decision, nor had the right to provide the forfeiture committee with any representations. The monarch holds sole responsibility for withdrawing all knighthoods; on this occasion Elizabeth II followed the advice of the committee, who decided to recommend the withdrawal to her. The Cabinet Office announced the advice had been given to the queen on the understanding that “Goodwin had brought the honours system in to disrepute”.

Speaking of the “exceptional case”, the committee explained: “In 2008, the government had to provide £20 billion of new equity to recapitalise RBS and ensure its survival and prevent the collapse of confidence in the British banking system. Subsequent increases in government capital have brought the total necessary injection of taxpayers’ money in RBS to £45.5 billion.” The committee understood that “Fred Goodwin was the dominant decision maker at RBS at the time.”

Until this announcement, criminal conviction and professional expulsion were the only causes for which individuals had their knighthoods revoked.

On Tuesday, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced a weather emergency in New York City, New York. The announcement was issued as a preemptive measure in preparation for an expected 6-12 inches of snow Wednesday, although the Metropolitan Transportation Authority claims to be ready for 14 inches.

Bloomberg explained the meaning of the preemptive announcement by stating: “We recognize that we did not do the job that New Yorkers rightly expect of us in the last storm. We intend to make sure that does not happen again.” Despite declaring an emergency, the mayor said the city would not make the decision to close public schools until 5 AM.

The city is looking for people to shovel snow off sidewalks and intersections. The New York City Housing Authority announced on their Twitter page, “Turn a snow day into a payday. The city is looking for snow removal help. Apply now.” The linked page offered $12 an hour to shovel snow for the city.

Tungsten Carbide Rings for Women

by

Johnn SmithWoman’s tungsten rings are becoming popular not only for their beauty and strength but also for the reason that a woman can match her partner’s tungsten band. Woman’s tungsten wedding rings are of many types depending upon their width. They can be a thin, more feminine width or a wider width fashion piece. Women can get whatever design she desires as the tungsten companies are now able to accommodate different tastes of style. Short description of the most popular woman’s tungsten band styles are given below.

Diamond set tungsten: Tungsten rings ordained with gemstones and diamonds are sturdy, trendy and attractive. Even though tungsten rings cannot be created into a diamond solitaire setting, a unique wedding band can be created by burnishing diamond into metal. Most attractive settings for diamond tungsten rings include a burnished eternity setting and a burnished diamond trio.

Polished tungsten wedding bands: Polished tungsten rings are completely scratch resistant and vibrant. Polished tungsten is most popular among men and now women are also able to get matching bands better suited for them. The majority of tungsten carbide ring companies standardize their widths to 6mm and 8mm. Some companies start at a 4mm width and there are few companies that start even at a 2mm width. Thin widths such as the 2mm can accommodate a woman wearing bands in other metals such as gold, platinum and silver. Thin width will not show the color difference of the metals as prominently as a wider width ring would.

Colored tungsten rings: Tungsten bands not only come in the lustrous metal, grey but also in black and gold. Gold and black colored tungsten wedding bands are plated with a thin layer of zirconium. Zirconium is a unique metal that is very similar to titanium in terms of durability and strength. Colored tungsten bands are unique as they are mainly for fashion only. Over time the coloring will begin to fade and will have scratches revealing the under coating metal. Many companies will cover this by their warranty.

Depending upon their individual taste, a person has to make sure, whether it is tungsten wedding band or fashion ring that they will be happy with. Many companies exhibit couples rings to make shopping more enjoyable. If a customer still doesn’t see what they are looking for, many companies will design a ring based on what she desires. A one of a kind ring style will truly show admiration and commitment.

The Asian theme allows many variations, the two most popular ethnic furniture themes are Japanese and Chinese. The Japanese theme is minimalist in nature and appearance, but it also tends to have a calming and peaceful feel. The most popular elements of a Japanese theme are futons and screens. Colors are natural and the focal points can be created by objects such as smooth stones, water fountains, and bonsai trees. Ethnic Chinese themes use bright and bold colors and elements such as lanterns, dragons, and artwork that depict landscapes and Chinese handwriting. Ethnic Indian theme is getting popular these days especially the desert look from Rajasthan, which is state of the Maharajas. India is a diverse country and hence there are many ethnic themes available from nomadic themes to the Himalayan villages and the party themes from Goa.

African Theme

What you see in your mind when you think of Africa? Stretching landscapes, wild animals, bright colors, earthy smells, and a rich, vibrant mood – African ethnic furniture theme is about all this and more. The main color schemes include natural colors such as beige, greens, browns, tans, in contrast with oranges, and bold splashes of reds. You can employ African theme anywhere like walls, floors, furniture etc. Some of the African artifacts you can use include drums, rugs, animal prints, rugs, masks etc.

How to get started

After having decided which particular brand of ethnic culture appeals to you, explore the various design options available such as magazines, books, and the Internet to spark your creativity and imagination. Work out which elements will go well together to create the look and feel you want.

Use trial and error method to design every space carefully. Work out the scheme for walls, ceiling and floors and build up on it. Here’s an ex: Should you keep the walls and ceiling surface rough or smooth? Should you use stone, wood, or tiles, or carpets for the floor?

Remember, ethnic furniture is a combination of looks and feels and the appearance of your home’s interior will depend on the theme you choose, and the elements you want to use.

Driftwood crucifix listed on eBay for $25,000

Posted on February 14, 2018February 14, 2018Categories Uncategorized

Monday, March 21, 2005 A piece of driftwood in the shape of a crucifix is listed for sale on eBay with a starting bid price of $25,000. The seller, known as “Marzipanda,” from Scottsdale, Arizona lists its description as a “Natural Found Wood Jesus Christ Crucifix Cross Easter.”

Maripanda describes the discovery of the piece as, “My very dear friend found this amazing natural driftwood while hiking a few years ago. So striking because it clearly resembles the Lord and all the details.”

Expensive found art Christiana made international headlines in November 2004 when a Florida woman named Diana Duyser sold a partially eaten grilled cheese sandwich on eBay for $28,000 to Canadian online gambling website, GoldenPalace.com, after claiming she saw the likeness of the Virgin Mary burned onto the toast.

But not all high-priced Christian fare on eBay is of dubious value. A perusal of Christian-themed items as of March 20, showed 13,944 for sale on eBay. They ranged from other found art to some very expensive and authenticated rare art.

One such item has an eBay seller from Tel-Aviv, Israel listing a 19th century iron wall plaque with a starting bid of $30,000 and a shipping cost of $2,000, making it the most-expensive Christian religious item listed for sale on the auction web site.

Under the “Christian Icons” section of the site, the 14 cast iron plaques are advertised to have been made in 1855 and portrays “Jesus in Jerusalem” with the 14 stations of Christ.

Another high-priced Christian-themed item is a set of chalices and paten in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for $3,550. The gold-plated silver is thought to have been made in the 1870s.
