Earth Hour 2009 takes place Saturday, March 28, 2009 between 8:30 to 9:30 pm local time when communities will participate by turning out their lights starting in New Zealand and progressing along time zones around the world.

Earth Hour began as a symbolic initiative against global warming by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). “[It is] The largest demonstration of public concern about climate change ever attempted.” Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General said.

Earth Hour began in 2007 with around 2 million participating, and increased to about 50 million in 2008. The Empire State Building, Las Vegas Strip, the Eiffel Tower, Petronas Twin Towers, the Peace Tower, the Parliament Buildings, the Christ the Redeemer statue, Acropolis of Athens, the Egyptian pyramids, and the Colosseum are some notable landmarks which will honour Earth Hour Saturday evening.

WWF organisers wished 1,000 cities would enlist in Earth Hour, however this was surpassed as this year over 2,400 have signed up to take part.

“The Government of Canada’s continued participation in Earth Hour is an indication of our commitment to being mindful consumers. As the custodian of one of the largest office building portfolios in the country, Public Works and Government Services Canada is committed to incorporating environmental practices into waste management, water conservation and the efficient use of energy in our buildings.” Christian Paradis, Minister of Public Works and Government Service said.

“Supporting Earth Hour is part of our commitment to help create a healthier environment for Canadians. Simple actions such as turning off the lights can help improve our environment and tackle climate change as well as empower Canadians to make important lifestyle changes that benefit their families and their environment. We encourage Canadians to take part in Earth Hour.” Jim Prentice, Minister of the Environment.

Subtitle, Dubbing, Voiceover Translation: Local Films Go International

by

Abe\’s Audio

An uneducated and hot-headed husband in a family falling apart stirs emotions at this year s recently held Golden Globe Awards, earning them the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, aside from their Berlin International Film Festival s Golden Bear in 2011 and their nomination for next month s Oscars. A Separation, a bold, brave and moving film directed by Asghar Farhadi, is the first Iranian film to significantly capture the U.S. audience.

Foreign Language Films Gain Worldwide Recognition

Regardless of beliefs, language and culture, people appreciate a good film when they see one. More foreign films are being recognised all over the world because of their artistic cinematography and interesting plots. Some foreign language movies have even done better than Hollywood films this past decade. According to IndieWire.com, here are the top 10 highest grossing imported films of the 2000s:

1. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Taiwan, 2000, $128,078,872

2. Hero, China, 2004, $53,710,019

3. Pan\’s Labyrinth, Mexico, 2006, $37,634,615

4. Amelie, France, 2001, $33,225,499

5. Jet Li\’s Fearless, China, 2006, $24,633,730

6. Kung Fu Hustle, China, 2005, $17,108,591

7. The Motorcycle Diaries, Argentina, 2004, $16,781,387

8. Iron Monkey, Hong Kong, 2001, $14,694,904

9. Monsoon Wedding, India, 2002, $13,885,966

10. Y Tu Mama Tambien, Mexico, 2002, $13,839,658

Although Europe has widely accepted audio-visual translation, such as subtitles, dubbing and voiceover translation for films these past few decades, it is only recently that the rest of the world have finally acknowledged this as well, opening their doors to foreign movies and recognising them in prestigious international film awards.

Non-fiction Media Use Voiceover Translation for Direct Quotations in News and Documentaries

Voiceover translation is not only practised in films and literary media, but also in non-fiction genres, such as documentaries, speeches, and news. As much as possible, the voiceover translations should show the authenticity of the content, that s why the voiceover portrays the speaker s voice, regional accent, and language variation. This way, the viewers would feel that what s being said in their own language is a representation of the original message. It is important that the voiceover talent is appropriately suited to the original speaker s voice, age, gender and personality.

Audio-visual Translation (AVT) or Screen Translating: Subtitling, Dubbing or Voice-over

With paid TV, DVDs and Netflix, more foreign language films are reaching the other corners of the world. Some viewers are still trying to overcome their fears of the language barriers, but most viewers have already accepted these films from other nations. But we have to take note that there could be possible dialogue changes or altered texts, which are unavoidable, because it s translating it to a localised setting or version.

There are some viewers who prefer watching imported shows or movies through subtitling, dubbing or voiceover in the local language. Below we have outlined these audio-visual translation styles and their purposes to better differentiate them:

Subtitles or subtitling

oQuickest and cheapest method of translating content from a foreign language to the native language of the viewers

oTranslating or transferring from oral language into a written language

oViewers can hear the original dialogue and the actors real voices

oInterpreting what is meant, instead of translating how it is said (meaning is favoured over form)

oDialogues in condensed or compressed form to suit the viewers reading speed (purpose over form)

Dub or dubbing

oVoice actors record the dialogues in the local language

oActors original voices are not heard anymore, overlapped by the voice actors

oCan be expensive, because you need to hire voice actors

oDialogues are based on the local preferences and interpretations, this can sometimes effect the original emotion or meaning of the dialogue if not done properly and professionally

oThe unfamiliar foreign cultural lifestyle and values could be expressed differently to suit the viewers culture (again, this can result in losing the emotional impact of the original version if an inappropriate voiceover is selected)

oLocalising imported films or shows, helping a wider audience understand and appreciate the culture from which it originally came

With the help of subtitles, dubbing or voiceover translations, local films get the chance to be viewed and appreciated internationally. People everywhere are recognising foreign films because of the availability of audio-visual translation methods.

If you have any material, fiction or non-fiction, that requires voiceover translation, please contact us and we ll show you the gallery of our voiceover talents.

Thursday, February 8, 2007

A new version of Canada’s Food Guide was announced by Canadian Health Minister Tony Clement on Feb. 5, 2007. The guide has helped Canadians with healthy eating habits since 1942 but was last updated in 1992. It is the Canadian government’s most-requested publication after income tax forms.

Changes to the Food Guide include:

 • a first-time recommendation to include a small amount of unsaturated fat in regular diets;
 • physical activity to complement healthy eating;
 • advice for some people to take vitamin supplements;
 • an advisory to limit foods with excess salt, sugar, fat and calories, which is considered an unprecedented caution regarding junk food.
Examples of the Food Guide’s four groups (clockwise from top left): vegetables and fruit, grain products, meat and its alternatives, milk and its alternatives

Latham quits as Australian Labor leader

Posted on December 11, 2017December 11, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

AUSTRALIA –Following hospitalisation for pancreatitis and ongoing speculation about his leadership, Mark Latham has resigned from his roles as leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and also the Federal Member for Werriwa. He cited as reasons the media harassment, and a desire to put his family and health first.

Mr Latham became leader of the ALP just over a year ago, on 2 December, 2003, leading the party during the October 2004 federal election. He was hospitalised in the run-up to that election, also for treatment of pancreatitis. Following the defeat of his party, his leadership increasingly came under question.

He fell ill a second time almost simultaneously with last year’s Indian Ocean tsunami disaster. His failure to issue a statement on the tsunami drew criticism from the media and calls for his resignation from within his own party, even after it was revealed that he had been incapacitated at the time.

Mr Latham’s resignation sidesteps the possibility of a leadership challenge by other members of the party and leaves no clear successor.

Wikinews interviews Duncan Campbell, co-founder of wheelchair rugby

Posted on December 11, 2017December 11, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Friday, September 7, 2012

London, England — On Wednesday, Wikinews interviewed Duncan Campbell, one of the creators of wheelchair rugby.

((Laura Hale)) You’re Duncan Campbell, and you’re the founder of…

Duncan Campbell: One of the founders of wheelchair rugby.

((Laura Hale)) And you’re from Canada, eh?

Duncan Campbell: Yes, I’m from Canada, eh! (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) Winnipeg?

Duncan Campbell: Winnipeg, Manitoba.

((Laura Hale)) You cheer for — what’s that NHL team?

Duncan Campbell: I cheer for the Jets!

((Laura Hale)) What sort of Canadian are you?

Duncan Campbell: A Winnipeg Jets fan! (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) I don’t know anything about ice hockey. I’m a Chicago Blackhawks fan.

((Hawkeye7)) Twenty five years ago…

Duncan Campbell: Thirty five years ago!

((Laura Hale)) They said twenty five in the stadium…

Duncan Campbell: I know better.

((Hawkeye7)) So it was 1977.

((Laura Hale)) You look very young.

Duncan Campbell: Thank you. We won’t get into how old I am.

((Hawkeye7)) So how did you invent the sport?

Duncan Campbell: I’ve told this story so many times. It was a bit of a fluke in a way, but there were five of us. We were all quadriplegic, that were involved in sport, and at that time we had the Canadian games for the physically disabled. So we were all involved in sports like table tennis or racing or swimming. All individual sports. And the only team sport that was available at that time was basketball, wheelchair basketball. But as quadriplegics, with hand dysfunction, a bit of arm dysfunction, if we played, we rode the bench. We’d never get into the big games or anything like that. So we were actually going to lift weights one night, and the volunteer who helped us couldn’t make it. So we went down to the gym and we started throwing things around, and we tried a few things, and we had a volleyball. We kind of thought: “Oh! This is not bad. This is a lot of fun.” And we came up with the idea in a night. Within one night.

((Hawkeye7)) So all wheelchair rugby players are quadriplegics?

Duncan Campbell: Yes. All wheelchair rugby players have to have a disability of some kind in all four limbs.

((Laura Hale)) When did the classification system for wheelchair rugby kick in?

Duncan Campbell: It kicked in right away because there was already a classification system in place for wheelchair basketball. We knew basketball had a classification system, and we very consciously wanted to make that all people with disabilities who were quadriplegics got to play. So if you make a classification system where the people with the most disability are worth more on the floor, and you create a system where there are only so many points on the floor, then the people with more disability have to play. And what that does is create strategy. It creates a role.

((Hawkeye7)) Was that copied off wheelchair basketball?

Duncan Campbell: To some degree, yes.

((Laura Hale)) I assume you’re barracking for Canada. Have they had any classification issues? That made you

Duncan Campbell: You know, I’m not going to… I can’t get into that in a major way in that there’s always classification issues. And if you ask someone from basketball, there’s classification issues. If you ask someone from swimming… There’s always classification issues. The classifiers have the worst job in the world, because nobody’s ever satisfied with what they do. But they do the best they can. They’re smart. They know what they’re doing. If the system needs to change, the athletes will, in some way, encourage it to change.

((Laura Hale)) Do you think the countries that have better classifiers… as someone with an Australian perspective they’re really good at classification, and don’t get theirs overturned, whereas the Americans by comparison have had a number of classification challenges coming in to these games that they’ve lost. Do you think that having better classifiers makes a team better able to compete at an international level?

Duncan Campbell: What it does is ensures that you practice the right way. Because you know the exact classifications of your players then you’re going to lineups out there that are appropriate and fit the classification. If your classifications are wrong then you may train for six months with a lineup that becomes invalid when that classification. So you want to have good classifiers, and you want to have good classes.

((Laura Hale)) When you started in 1977, I’ve seen pictures of the early wheelchairs. I assume that you were playing in your day chair?

Duncan Campbell: Yes, all the time. And we had no modifications. And day chairs at that time were folding chairs. They were Earjays or Stainless. That’s all the brands there were. The biggest change in the game has been wheelchairs.

((Laura Hale)) When did you retire?

Duncan Campbell: I never retired. Still play. I play locally. I play in the club level all the time.

((Laura Hale)) When did you get your first rugby wheelchair?

Duncan Campbell: Jesus, that’s hard for me to even think about. A long time ago. I would say maybe twenty years ago.

((Laura Hale)) Were you involved in creating a special chair, as Canadians were pushing the boundaries and creating the sport?

Duncan Campbell: To a degree. I think everybody was. Because you wanted the chair that fit you. Because they are all super designed to an individual. Because it allows you to push better, allows you to turn better. Allows you to use your chair in better ways on the court. Like you’ve noticed that the defensive chairs are lower and longer. That’s because the people that are usually in a defensive chair have a higher disability, which means they have less balance. So they sit lower, which means they can use their arms better, and longer so they can put screens out and set ticks for those high point players who are carrying the ball. It’s very much strategic.

((Hawkeye7)) I’d noticed that in wheelchair basketball the low point player actually gets more court time…

Duncan Campbell: …because that allows the high point player to play. And its the same in this game. Although in this game there’s two ways to go. You can go a high-low lineup, which is potentially two high point players and two very low point players, which is what Australia does right now with Ryley Batt and the new kid Chris Bond. They have two high point players, and two 0.5 point players. It makes a very interesting scenario for, say, the US, who use four mid-point players. In that situation, all four players can carry the ball; in the Australian situation, usually only two of them can carry the ball.

((Laura Hale)) Because we know you are going soon, the all-important question: can Canada beat the Australians tonight?

Duncan Campbell: Of course they are. (laughter)

((Laura Hale)) Because Australians love to gamble, what’s your line on Canada?

Duncan Campbell: It’s not a big line! I’m not putting a big line on it! (laughter) I’d say it’s probably 6–5.

((Hawkeye7)) Is your colour commentary for the Canadian broadcast?

Duncan Campbell: That was for the IPC. I did the GB–US game this morning. I do the Sweden–Australia game tomorrow at two. And then I’m doing the US–France game on the last day.

((Laura Hale)) Are you happy with the level of coverage the Canadians are providing your sport?

Duncan Campbell: No.

((Laura Hale)) Thank you for an honest answer.

Duncan Campbell: Paralympic Sports TV is their own entity. They webcast, but they’re not a Canadian entity. Our Canadian television is doing… can I swear?

((Laura Hale)) Yeah! Go ahead!

Duncan Campbell: No! (laughter) They’re only putting on an hour a day. A highlight package, which to me is…

((Hawkeye7)) It’s better than the US.

Duncan Campbell: Yes, I’ve heard it’s better than the US. At the same time, it’s crap. You have here [in Great Britain], they’ve got it on 18 hours a day, and it’s got good viewership. When are we going to learn in North America that viewership is out there for it? How many times do we have to demonstrate it? We had the Paralympics in Vancouver two years ago, the Winter Paralympics, and we had crappy coverage there. There was an actual outburst demand to put the opening ceremonies on TV because they weren’t going to do it. And they had to do it, because everybody complained. So they did it, but they only did it in BC, in our home province, where they were holding it. The closing ceremonies they broadcast nationally because the demand was so high. But they still haven’t changed their attitudes.

((Laura Hale)) I have one last question: what did it mean for you when they had a Canadian flag bearer who was a wheelchair rugby player?

Duncan Campbell: I recruited that guy. It was fantastic. I recruited him. Found him playing hockey. And that guy has put in so much time and effort into the game. He absolutely deserves it. No better player.

((Laura Hale)) Thank you!

((Hawkeye7)) Thank you! Much appreciated.

Oldbury nuclear power station suffers fire

Oldbury nuclear power station in South Gloucestershire, England caught fire today after overheating. No-one was injured in the blaze which is believed to have been an accident and was extuinguished within minutes by an automatic sprinkler system.

The fire took place on the non-nuclear side of the plant, in an electricity transformer, but prompted shutdown of the reactor for the foreseeable future in “accordance with standard procedure,” said Dan Gould, spokesman for the British Nuclear Group. He also stressed that there was no release of radiation. There were also reports of an explosion in the transformer.

The BBC reported that 12 fire trucks attended the scene of the fire, but ITV stated ten crews were involved and tvnz.co.uk quoted a spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue as saying that ten trucks were sent.

Livingstone brands Boris ‘a joke’ in London mayoral elections

Posted on December 11, 2017December 11, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

On the final day of campaigning before the vote in the London mayoral election, incumbent Ken Livingstone attacked main rival Boris Johnson as “a joke”. He warned Londoners that they were not voting in a “Celebrity Mayor” contest.

Livingstone unveiled a campaign poster in West Ham that will also be printed on postcards and sent to one million Londoners. It reads: “Don’t vote for a joke. Vote for London.”

“It’s not an election for the host of Have I Got News For You or a celebrity mayor. It’s about who is best placed to run an £11bn budget every year,” Mayor Livingstone said, referring to the panel game show, for which Boris Johnson has been a guest host.

“Tomorrow you have a choice between new policies and fresh energy from a new mayor in City Hall or more of the same from a tired, out-of-date administration that is beset by allegations of sleaze,” responded Johnson in a mass e-mail to over 500,000 voters. “I am optimistic about London’s future and believe we can make London a greater place to live in.”

London will be voting for mayor tomorrow, May 1. Ken Livingstone is the candidate for The Labour Party and Boris Johnson is the candidate for the Conservative Party. There are a number of other candidates, but recent opinion polls have shown it to be a two-person race, with some polls predicting a victory for Livingstone and others Johnson.

A Changing Face Of Womens Health}

Submitted by: SPS Hospitals

Improvements and advancements are happening in every field, similar advances are happening in obstetrics and gynaecology care. Many new modalities have emerged in past few years and are routinely available. I am highlighting few important ones which are helpful to health-conscious women.

Preconception counselling

Preconceptional counseling and investigations have taken a new shape. Initially we use to counsel women about preonceptional counseling and its importance, as general awareness about this among women is less. Along with ordering common tests for diseases like Thalassemia, HIV, syphilis, thyroid status and rubella we also examine the women whether they are healthy enough for conception. Many subtle signs and symptoms of common problems like hypertension and diabetes are picked up in this preconceptional care clinics and controlling these conditions early leads to a healthy outcome. Like starting Folic acid in preconception phase has reduced the incidence of neural tube defects in the baby. Medicines for diabetes, epilepsy, hypertension or cardiac disorders may need to be changed to safer options before conceiving.

Detecting Genetic Syndromes

Pregnancy care has introduced tests for genetic diseases like Nuchal Translucency and Dual test at 12 to 14 weeks, and quadruple test and a targeted level 2 scan at 18 weeks. These tests help us to detect some of the common syndromes at very early gestation and can prevent the birth of affected child at very early stage of pregnancy. Women suffering from cardiac disorders, diabetes or other chronic illnesses are advised to undergo fetal echocardiography to diagnosed congenital heart diseases in utero and are counselled about their outcome. This saves the mental trauma of the couple. For the couples in whom first or second trimester screening has come positive, Prenatal invasive testing, i.e. chorionic villus testing and amniocentesis, are also available for confirming the diagnosis. Fetal cells that are obtained by these procedures are looked for any targeted genetic problems. These tests become more so important when a couple has an affected baby earlier also.

Epidural Analgesia (Painless Delivery)

Delivery which used to be a painful and dreadful experience earlier has become a memorable and enjoyable experience now. Painless delivery which is also known as epidural analgesia has made it possible. Painless delivery is choice of the patient. Patient is informed about it during antenatal visits or classes. Patient should have an open mind for it, nothing should be decided prior. As actual pain threshold patient will come to know when she is going to experience that pain. There are few minor side effects of this procedure (like weakness in legs, fever, low blood pressure), but it has a good overall safety.

We target 1:1 nurse to patient ratio for all patients who are laboring. This allows us to have a better care of the patient and patient is more comfortable at the tough time. Allowing the husband to support the patient during delivery is also being increasing demanded by the couple and we support the patient for her choice of attendant during delivery for her psychological boosting for that particular matter.

High-Risk Pregnancy

Mothers whose pregnancy is complicated by factors related to her present or past pregnancy or some medical disorder putting her life in danger are now taken care of with the help of multi-disciplinary approach, along with the services of blood bank, intensive care units. But as most obstetrical complications are unpredictable, every pregnant female is at the risk irrespective of her risk status. It is a critical moment and the female need immediate access to a quality obstetrical care unit.

Earlier there used to be many deaths related to such issues but now comprehensive care has made the pregnancy safer even in the females who are conceiving at 50 years of age with kidneys functioning less, heart responding low, blood pressures rising and sugars unstable. Babies who have come in this world before time or at very low weight, say 500 gms, have a good neurologically intact survival as the Doppler studies help us to time their removal from uterus at very accurate time. Its the decision to prolong the pregnancy or to keep the fetus in utero which is very crucial in such cases. Ultrasound and Doppler help us to take this decision in a better way.

Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomies

Hysterectomies which used to be open surgeries earlier are now done as day care laparoscopic procedure. Patient has to be in the hospital for 4 to 7 days when open procedure was opted; but now patient enjoys the coziness of home within 24 hours. She can start up her daily chores in a day or two surgeries because she feels comfortable as there is no big scar on her belly. Even ovarian cysts and masses, tubectomies or recanalisation of tubes (opening the tubes) that have been earlier ligated, tuboplasty (repairing a tube) which is responsible for the infertility of the couple is dealt with laparoscopic technique very effectively. It has the advantage of early recovery of patient as well as fewer adhesions inside the abdomen.

Preventive Health Checkups

Everyone knows the importance of preventive health care checkups. Migration to foreign countries demanding the clearance of health status has helped us a lot to make our own people aware that it is not only for medical visa but also for their own self that regular and right tests are done at right time of their life in a right manner. For females paps smear or liquid cytology with HPV DNA, sonomammography, bone mineral density, ultrasonography are all that is needed along with the routine tests of body fitness, general physical examination , and gynecological examination. Any positive history of cancers in first-degree relative should also make you consult us early.

Urinary Problems

Usually urinary problems are the issues of menopausal females but there is no age bars to it. Even a female who have just delivered a baby can have urinary retentions or leakage, over the years newer drugs have helped us to do a justice to the life of females with this problem. Incontinence surgeries like Kellys repair, cystocele repair or putting a tape are giving good results to our patient making them live a better and confident life again.

Hormone Therapy after Age 65

Females come to us very frequently to give them the hormone replacement therapy. I would like to point out here that studies are not favoring use of HRT and you should not take it just because you have turned menopausal.

Egg Freezing Advances Help Women Stay Fertile

If a young female has to undergo cancer therapy it is a very good option to freeze the eggs that can be used later on. It will help the girl stay fertile.

2014 has also marked the birth of baby from a uterus transplant. A female who was born with no uterus have received a transplanted uterus and the conceived in that uterus and a full term baby was born. This is just a small glimpse of advancement; obstetrics and gynecology have to go a long way.

Man in Florida, USA, arrested for using 911 to complain about fast food

Posted on December 10, 2017December 10, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

A man in Boynton Beach, Florida located in the United States, was arrested for misusing the city’s 911 emergency phone service. Jean Fortune, 66, called 911 to complain about a fast food order from Burger King he had not yet placed.

On Monday Fortune called 911 to complain that the Burger King he was going to eat at did not sell lemonade. He also complained to 911 operators that the food he had yet to order, was going to take 15 minutes to complete.

“You cannot dial 911 because you are unhappy with your burger, ok. I know you don’t seriously think that the police need to make Burger King give you food faster,” says the operator as Fortune continued to complain. “If it takes 15 minutes to cook, it takes 15 minutes to cook, ok. You don’t need to call 911.”

It turns out, after nearly three minutes of arguing with the operator, Fortune never even placed an order.

“Have you given them any money?,” asks the operator. Fortune replies “no.” The operator then asks Fortune, “have they given you any food?” Again Fortune replies “no.” The operator then tells Fortune that he is able to “just drive away” from the situation, but he disagrees and tells her he will “just move [his] car”. The operator warns Fortune that the police are on their way and then tells him to not block the drive-thru.

When police arrived, they arrested him for misusing the emergency line, which is a criminal offense in Florida. He was formally charged with the crime, issued a notice to appear in court and then released.
