Israeli military forces today seized a ship claimed to be carrying weapons bound for the Gaza Strip.

The ship, a German-owned and Liberian-flagged freighter named Victoria, had departed from a port in Syria before travelling to Turkey, from where it departed for Alexandria, Egypt. A French company had chartered the vessel, which was intercepted and boarded by Israeli commandos about 200 miles from shore while in international waters.

Victoria was reportedly boarded without incident, and is being taken to Ashdod, a port city in Israel. Three containers of weapons were found on board the ship, though the type or total number are unknown. A further inspection of the cargo will be carried out once the ship reaches Ashdod.

According to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, “[o]n the boat we discovered many weapons destined for terror groups in the heart of Gaza.” He also claimed that Iran was responsible for shipping the weapons, saying that “[t]he only certain thing is the source of the weaponry was Iran, and there was a Syrian relay station as well.”

Grammy Award-winning rock band The White Stripes announced on Wednesday the Canadian leg of a tour in support of their soon-to-be-released album, Icky Thump. The tour, which would be the first cross-Canada excursion for The White Stripes, will see the band play dates in all provinces and territories.

The latest tour for The White Stripes will kick off June 1 in Nürburgring, Germany and will play several dates in Europe before starting off in Canada on June 24, in Burnaby, British Columbia. Canadian dates will include stops in northern locales such as Whitehorse, Yellowknife, and Iqaluit, on Baffin Island.

The White Stripes, made up of guitarist/singer Jack White and drummer Meg White, have developed a significant worldwide following with their blend of punk and blues, guitar-oriented rock. The band had expressed interest in playing cities they had not yet visited. “Having never done a full tour of Canada, Meg and I thought it was high time to go whole hog,” said Jack White on The White Stripes website. “We want to take this tour to the far reaches of the Canadian landscape. From the ocean to the permafrost.” The band’s website referred to Canada by its nickname, the ‘Great White North’.

The White Stripes have played to thousands in large outdoor festival settings, but will have to deal with different logistics while setting up in a northern location, such as Iqaluit.

Some 500 tickets for the Iqaluit show are to be sold, with an admission fee of approximately CA$40. Mike Bozzer, the city of Iqaluit’s economic development officer, told CBC News that talks have taken place with The White Stripes’ publicist regarding equipment, technicians, security and other such details. “It’s definitely going to have some economic impact, and they’ll come back home with positive stories of the city,” said Bozzer.

The band’s ten-year anniversary will be reached at a point during the Canadian leg of the tour, which will be commemorated. “Another special moment of this tour is the show which will occur in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 14th, The White Stripes’ Tenth Anniversary,” said Jack White.

Following the Canadian dates, The White Stripes will embark on a tour in the United States, which will reach some 16 states they have not yet visited during their career, among other repeat locations.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The bodies of two children were found this morning in a car in Heathfield, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom. A 43-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of the murders.

The boy and girl were both less than five years old, and were discovered at 11:46 this morning (GMT) when Sussex police officers forced their way into the vehicle, which was parked on Mill Close in Heathfield. The woman, who has yet to be identified, had visited Heathfield police station earlier this morning to report “an incident”, and was later arrested on suspicion of murder. The police say that they have identified the bodies. The identities will be revealed when the post mortem examinations take place, which is scheduled for next Thursday.

I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area

The woman was taken to Eastbourne District General Hospital, and has not yet been interviewed by the police. She is believed to be from Surrey but have connections with the Heathfield area. Mill Close, the road on which the incident occurred, has been closed, according to a police spokeswoman, who said, “An investigation is now under way and the area around the scene is cordoned off.” Chief Inspector Julia Pope, Wealden district policing commander, said, “This is a very tragic incident, but I would like to reassure people that it is fully contained and there is no threat to anyone in the area. We will move to restore normality and access to Mill Close as quickly as possible.” A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said, “We sent an ambulance and two response cars but sadly two young children were pronounced dead at the scene.”

Body of missing Florida girl found

The body of Sarah Lunde, a missing 13-year-old Florida girl, was found very close to her home Saturday, authorities said.

Lunde’s body was found by a search-and-rescue dog in an abandoned fish farm about a half-mile away from her home, according to David Gee, sheriff of Hillsborough County. Lunde had been missing since last Sunday from her home in Ruskin, a town to the south of Tampa.

Gee said the body had a green cast on one arm, just as Sarah did. “The green cast is apparent,” he said. He also stated that the body had been in the water for a long period of time, and that an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of Lunde’s death.

“The family is very distraught,” Gee added.

According to CNN, David Onstott, 36, was charged late Saturday night with first-degree murder Gee said. “He is the defendant.”,Onstott confessed to the murder. He was arrested on Tuesday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Aside from a 1995 sexual assault charge, Onstott is said to have been sighted at Lunde’s house hours after Lunde disappeared, and grabbed a half-empty beer bottle as he left. This could possibly link him to the numerous beer bottles found around the area, which, it is rumored, will be subjected to DNA testing. Onstott was also arraigned on Thursday on charges of not registering as a sex offender and is currently being held in the Hillsborough County Jail. Although his bond was set at $250,000, sheriff’s spokesman J.D. Callaway stated that since no bond was set on a Michigan drunk driving warrant Onstott is also being held for, there is no bond set on him for his various other charges, so Onstott is being held without bond for the moment.

This case is now the second such case in a month. Jessica Lunsford‘s body was found in Citrus County, north of Tampa, after she had been missing from her home for three weeks.

Convicted sex offender John E. Couey, who had been living near Lunsford’s home, was arrested and charged with her murder after he confessed.

Saving the Project Management Office: There’s No Place Like Home.

With three clicks of those ruby slippers and “There’s no place like home,” Dorothy was back in Kansas. I wonder if finding the best project management professionals could be that easy?

I recently heard, in casual conversation with a noted PPM expert, that 50 percent of PMOs fail. By that I mean, many organizations don’t have a clear understanding of the value that the PMO offers an organization and that there appears to be an alarming number of PMO restarts that also fail to identify their value. Some organizations even try to give the PMO a different name, seeking to distance the new organization from the failures of the previous PMO.

As more and more organizations see the benefit of streamlining project based work to increase efficiency and even profitability, implementing project management best practices seems to be a natural fit. That being said, I wonder if we’re looking for that expertise in the wrong places.

One of the lessons Dorothy learned from her adventures in Oz included, “…if I ever go looking for my heart’s desire again, I won’t look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with!”

I think I agree with Dorothy.

I’ve come to appreciate that it’s often the soft skills that make the difference between a very successful project management professional and one who isn’t. Successful work management methodologies combined with cultural fit, market fit, and people fit seem to be the keys for successful project leadership.

The trends seem to indicate that although formal projects will continue to be part of the work people do, the need to manage ad hoc or loosely planned projects is becoming more and more important. The leadership skills needed for this type of PMO might best be found already within the organization. Project management methodologies can be learned, and the right project management tools, along with an investment in education, can help make good leaders good project leaders. Indeed, if cultural fit, market fit, and people fit are an important factor in the success of future PMOs, those qualities already exist within many organizations. (I don’t mean to suggest that those skills can’t be found outside the organization, but that might not be where the search should begin.)

The right project management software may contribute to saving the PMO for many organizations, but more importantly, when you go looking for the PMO of your heart’s desire, maybe you shouldn’t go looking any further than your own back yard.

Police arrest two over Exeter bomb explosion

Posted on October 16, 2017October 16, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Police have arrested two men in connection to Thursday’s bomb explosion in a cafe in Exeter, United Kingdom. The man suspected of being the bomber remains in hospital in a stable condition and is yet to be formally interviewed.

Ten armed officers arrested the pair from outside a cafe in Plymouth, Devon, and are questioning them. Their names have not been released.

The bomb that exploded in the Giraffe was composed of sodium hydroxide, kerosene, strips of aluminium foil and nails. Suspected bomber Nicky Reilly emerged moments later with a bloodied face and is under police guard in hospital, where he has undergone surgery to graft skin over lacerations to his face.

Experts have gone over Reilly’s mobile phone, home telephone records and his computer. It is reported that his computer screensaver featured the World Trade Centre in flames after being struck by two hijacked airliners during the 9/11 attacks, and that his mobile revealed that shortly before the explosion he had received a text message apparently encouraging an attack with the bombs.

A second similar bomb was defused nearby. Both were described as highly volatile devices that could be activated by shaking. It is being investigated whether the bombs were supposed to be placed in the toilet with the belief that they were powerful enough to blow out the facade of the building.

Prince Philip of UK makes last solo public engagement after 65 years

Posted on October 16, 2017October 16, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, August 5, 2017

The United Kingdom’s Prince Philip, 96, performed his last solo official royal public engagement, before retiring from his official duties as the consort of Queen Elizabeth II after 65 years of service, with a Captain General’s parade of the Royal Marines at Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

As the Captain General, he took the royal salute and inspected the soldiers to mark the end of the 1664 Global Challenge. He told the soldiers humorously “You all should be locked up” after they completed a 2,678 kilometer (1664 mile) trek in support of the Royal Marines Charity.

Buckingham Palace announced Philip’s retirement plan in May. Philip succeeded King George VI — Elizabeth’s father — as Captain General of marines in 1953, the year after she succeeded him as monarch. On the announcement in May, Prime Minister Theresa May offered her well wishes and gratitude to Prince Philip, 95 years old at the time.

Lady Myra Butter, an acquaintance of Philip’s for more than eight decades, said on BBC Radio 4 program Today, of Philip’s future after retirement, “I’m sure that he won’t disappear, he will be greatly missed by everybody. He’s been such a stable character in all our lives — he’s always there and he’s always been there for the Queen and I think we’re very, very lucky to have him.”

Serving longer than any other British consort, Philip has made 22,219 solo public engagements as consort, 637 solo overseas visits, 5,496 speeches, and 14 books. He currently supports or belongs to more than 780 organisations.

Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, is a nephew of late King Constantine I of Greece, and was born on the Greek island of Corfu. Philip is a former naval officer and courted Elizabeth during his service in the Royal Navy. He married her in 1947 in Westminster Abbey. This November will be their 70th wedding anniversary. Elizabeth described Philip as “my strength and stay”.

Every Business Should Have a Vinyl Banner

by

Marc Hayes

Have you ever been to a sports game and saw a banner that advertised a company or even another team? Vinyl Banners are a way to advertise your business in a large way. Banners are great for calling attention to a specific area. For example, if your business does a lot of recruiting, you probably use a banner to attach to the table. That banner can be seen from quite a distance. Its the attention that will bring people to you.

Banners can be very artistic and the template is an open canvas. You can display a little about your company or a lot. Do you have company colors? Add color to your vinyl banner and it will stand out in the crowd. Most Banners are about the same size but there are a few differences. Advertising is very important to any business. Next to a business card, banners are great to hang outside of the business where possible. As people are driving by the banner will catch their eye and they will either turn around and come back or make a mental note to return to the business when they can. Having a business sign is good, but banners seem to stand out just by the sheer size.

Vinyl Banners can also be used at festivals or other areas that you support as a business owner. Your business may support a walking team for the March of Dimes. Bring your banner along and post it along the walkers route. Advertising doesnt always net immediate money but thats ok. You want to keep your companys name fresh in the customers mind for when he or she is ready. Its ok if they wait 2 or 3 weeks before they come back just as long as they do.

Business owners need several ways to advertise their business. Having a vinyl banner is very cost effective and can draw a customer into your place of business. Once they are in there, you or your sales staff can begin to convince them that you have what they are looking for. Without a way to draw the customer into your business, there may be missed opportunities. Missed opportunities can equate to money lost in sales and revenue. Our economic climate does not afford you the opportunity to pick and choose who your customers should be. Allow them to self select themselves after seeing your banner.
