Manitoba volunteers go to war against Red River flooding
Posted on October 15, 2022October 16, 2022Categories Uncategorized
Monday, April 6, 2009
Over 1,600 volunteers registered to help build approximately 65,000 of the 500,000 sandbags to create dikes 20.5 feet (6 metres) high to protect the City of Winnipeg, Manitoba in the war against the Red River of the North flood.
700 volunteers answered at the rural municipality of St. Andrews alone. Once sandbags are filled for West St. Paul, St. Andrews, and Selkirk, then frozen culverts must be cleared.
The height of the river is expected to be Thursday, and predictions are that it will be less than Flood of the Century of 1997. There is no precipitation in the forecast, and snow in the province should be melted by the end of the week.
“The fear right now is we have to get that ice out of the river. The Amphibex [Excavators] are still working and breaking the ice apart, and everyday we buy with the warm weather and the current, it is thinning the ice down a bit, so when it does start to move, the better chance it’ll move right out into the lake,” said Paul Guyder, the emergency coordinator for the RMs of St. Andrews and St. Clements.
“I feel that we’ve done everything humanly possible to get ready,” said Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, “But … there are fallibilities with human behaviour. We can take every preventative measure as human beings possible and we can still get Mother Nature proving again she is superior.”
Communities with ring diking will partially or fully close their dikes at the beginning of the week. Provincial officials are considering opening the Red River Floodway gates around mid-week before ice is fully melted.
Ice jams could cause flooding within the city, however opening the gates could spare neighbourhood flooding when the river rises to the estimated 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) height. The province does have back up plans for dealing with ice jams within the city if they do occur. The unpredictability of ice jams and the ensuing water level rise may cause neighbourhood flooding. The city is raising dikes where the river has jammed with ice in the past such as on tight curves and past bridges. Likewise there are excavators and backhoes positioned at these points.
Vulnerable neighbourhoods on the river banks have been reinforced with sandbag dikes at vulnerable areas from the massive volunteer effort over the weekend. Guyader feels no more extra volunteers are needed, however volunteers are still being asked to leave their names and number in case of unpredicted need. Existing personnel will assess roads, and help with clean up.
Approximately 400 of the 800 people who evacuated the Roseau River Anishinabe First Nation have returned to their homes.
Former Premier, Dufferin Roblin, brought forward the floodway as a protection for Winnipeg residents and economy following the 1950 Red River Flood. The Red River floodway, “Duff’s Ditch” was finally finished in 1968, and its floodway gates have been opened 20 times saving Winnipeg from an estimated CA$10 billion in damages. The floodway expansion began in 2005 at a price of $665 million.
Polish and Chinese experts have come to survey the Red River Floodway, and Dennis Walaker, mayor of Fargo, North Dakota recognises the need for Red River flood defences down river. “Every town that you drive by from the Canadian line up to Winnipeg is either elevated or ring-diked,” said Walaker.
Cosmetic Dentistry Advancement

Fifty years ago, cosmetic dentistry was something only the privileged could afford. A perfect smile was something that you only saw in movies and magazines, but in today’s world, the smile of your dreams is attainable. Modern cosmetic dentistry is not only accessible, but affordable. Dental implants, teeth whitening and bleaching, and veneers are available to improve the appearance and health of your teeth.
Technology has improved so much that cosmetic dentistry is now common in society. The procedures can be done quickly and for less money. Soon, things like metal braces and metal crowns will be a thing of the past because of new material and better dental technology. Cosmetic dentists can now straighten teeth without the hardware and dental implants are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
In the far distant past, dentists used harmful chemicals for teeth whitening and even carved dental implants out of wood. There are teeth whitening products available now that can strengthen your teeth as well as whiten. Dental implants have also come a long way. Some implants are virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
In the past, dental implant procedures were long and painful. Today, it only takes two visits, during which a local anesthetic makes the process pain-free. Dental implant treatments require your cosmetic dentist to drill a small hole into your bone to place a titanium screw. This is what the permanent implant will be attached to.
The alignment of teeth is a big portion of cosmetic dentistry. Metal braces are slowly becoming less popular among patients. People have found the plastic, removable, clear retainers to be a better option to straighten their teeth. This eliminates the sores that often accompany metal braces and the need for teeth whitening to get rid of the marks that are left from the posts once they are removed.
Convenience is something cosmetic dentistry aims for. Many of us had to go through the stage where we wouldn’t smile because we didn’t want our braces to forever go down in history. Clear alignment retainers let you avoid this. Another advantage is being able to take them out while you eat and when you brush and floss your teeth. This makes proper dental hygiene easier for kids to keep up.
Dentures used to be the only option for those with missing teeth in cosmetic dentistry. These are uncomfortable and often cause dental problems such as bone loss. Dental implants have nearly replaced the need for dentures. Cosmetic dentists can now permanently replace the teeth, making them easier to clean. Teeth whitening options are becoming more and more numerous as well.
More and more cosmetic dentistry advancement is taking place in today’s methods of dental implants, teeth whitening, and cosmetic dental surgery all the time. Soon the perfect smile will be available to everyone. Another addition to the dental world is 3-D images of your teeth displayed on state of the art dental software.
Products for teeth whitening in cosmetic dentistry are becoming more available to those looking to whiten at home. A white smile is now perceived as a healthy smile, so there is no doubt that at-home teeth whitening products will become more and more popular. In just a few short minutes, you can have a noticeably brighter smile. Of course, it is a good idea to check with your dentist before doing any over the counter teeth whitening jobs to see if it is safe for your teeth.

State Farm Insurance allegedly destroying papers
Posted on October 14, 2022October 15, 2022Categories Uncategorized
Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Zach Scruggs, a lawyer for United States Senator Trent Lott, says that State Farm Insurance Company is destroying records related to claims for damage from Hurricane Katrina.
The records allegedly contain information saying that State Farm fraudulently denied insurance claims made by its policy holders, including Lott, that had homes there were damaged or destroyed when Hurricane Katrina came ashore on the Gulf Coast.
Scruggs said that Lott has “good faith belief” that many employees of the insurance company in Biloxi, Mississippi are destroying engineer’s reports that were inconclusive as to whether or not water or wind was the main cause of damage to the buildings affected by the hurricane.
Lott is among thousands of home and/or business owners who had their property damaged or destroyed during the hurricane and had their claims denied because State Farm claimed that their policies don’t cover damage caused by floods or water that was driven by the wind.
State Farm has not issued a statement on the matter so far.
British Prime Minister David Cameron makes unannounced visit to Libya

Friday, February 1, 2013
British Prime Minister David Cameron made an unannounced visit to the Libyan capital city of Tripoli yesterday after visiting Algeria earlier in the day.
David Cameron pledged that Britain would help in training Libya’s security forces. He said in a joint press conference held with Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan that “the British people want to stand with you and help you deliver the greater security that Libya needs”. Cameron also reiterated his support for the French-backed intervention in Mali, denying suggestions put to him that foreign intervention in Islamic countries would lead to a backlash against Western nations by al-Qaeda.
The security was tight during his walkabout in the Martyrs’ Square, where police attempted to hold back the locals as a police helicopter flew overhead. His visit to Tripoli comes in the aftermath of recent threats to the British embassy and just a week after British citizens were urged to leave the second largest city of Benghazi due to a “specific and imminent” threat to Westerners.
Police officers investigating the 1988 Lockerbie bombing from the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary have been granted access to new information to help them with their inquiries. In 2001, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment but was released in 2009 on compassionate health grounds and died last year.

Peter Andren, Australian MP dies aged 61

Sunday, November 4, 2007
Australian federal member of Calare, Peter Andren died on Saturday after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was aged 61.
Mr Andren who had held the seat since being elected in 1996 had previously announced his intention to run for the senate after his electorate was changed for the 2007 federal election. After Mr Andren was diagnosed with cancer in July, he announced that he would be retiring from politics at the election.
Mr Andren’s 1996 campaign platform was based upon retaining services in regional Australia, particularly banking, health and telecommunications. Over the next 11 years, Mr Andren’s primary vote grew and at the 2001 and 2004 elections was elected without preferences, achieving a majority primary vote.
In 2001, Mr Andren disagreed with his electorate on refugees. The electorate supported the government’s tough stance but Mr Andren could not support the government’s border protection measures. Following this, a vicious letter-box campaign rose up saying “you might like Peter Andren … but you won’t like what he’s got to say about keeping our borders safe”.
Fellow NSW independent member, Tony Windsor said Mr Andren’s stance on asylum seekers was just one sign of his compassion and strong belief in human rights.
Mr Windsor described Mr Andren as the “conscience” of parliament. “Peter Andren was a true representative of the people of the Calare electorate, a man of the highest integrity and the conscience of the Parliament,” he said.
“He was subjected to vitriol from time to time within the Parliament over issues, but if he believed in something he stuck to it. He didn’t compromise and I think that’s a lasting legacy that Peter will leave.”
Prime Minister John Howard said despite having a difference of opinion with Mr Andren on many issues, he had a lot of respect for him.
“I respected his skills as a local member,” he said.
“Mr Andren and I frequently disagreed on major issues and he made no bones about that and I made no bones about it either but that didn’t stop me respecting him and acknowledging the tremendous work he did for his electorate.”
Labor leader Kevin Rudd described Mr Andren as a true independent.
“Peter Andren will be a great loss to the Australian parliament,” he said.
“He was a man of principle, a man of commitment, a man who was an absolute independent.”
Leader of the Greens, Bob Brown said Mr Andren was an example of how a politician should be.
“He was an exemplar of representative politics for his electorate and the people of Calare kept returning him with a bigger and bigger majority,” he said.
“[If] anybody ever asks me how a politician should be, I am going to say, ‘Look at the record of Peter Andren'”
“He was a great Australian representative and he is a great loss to this country.”
During his political career, Mr Andren fought the sale of Telstra, introduced a bill to allow MPs to opt-out of their generous superannuation schemes, opposed the Iraq war and campaigned on environmental issues.
Mr Andren was born at Gulargambone, near Dubbo in Western NSW in 1946. Before he entered politics Mr Andren worked as a teacher before moving into journalism. Mr Andren worked as a news producer in Sydney for the Seven and Nine networks, before moving back to regional NSW where he worked as the news editor for both Radio 2GZ and Prime Television.
Mr Andren is survived by his partner and two sons.
Barack Obama presents rescue plan after GM declaration of bankruptcy
Posted on October 9, 2022October 10, 2022Categories Uncategorized
Monday, June 1, 2009
In a televised speech from the White House at 16:00 UTC today, President of the United States Barack Obama presented a reorganization plan following the 12:00 UTC announcement by General Motors that it had filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, the largest bankruptcy of a U.S. manufacturing company.
Describing the problem with the company as one that had been “decades in the making,” Obama explained the rationale behind his proposed reorganization plan for General Motors. He stated that his intent was not to “perpetuat[e] the bad business decisions of the past,” and that loaning General Motors money, when debt was its problem, would have been doing exactly that. His plan, he stated, was for the United States government, in conjunction with the governments of Canada and Ontario (which he thanked for their roles alongside the government of Germany which he thanked for its role in selling a corporate stake in GM Europe), to become shareholders in General Motors. The United States government would hold a 60% stake. The government will give GM a capital infusion of US$30 billion in addition to the funds it has already received.
Of the government ownership he stated that he refused “to let General Motors and Chrysler become wards of the state”, and described the bankruptcy of Chrysler, and the bankruptcy of General Motors that he envisioned as being “quick, surgical, bankruptcies”. He pointed to the bankruptcy of Chrysler as an example of what he envision for General Motors, but stated that General Motors was a “more complex company” than Chrysler.
Responding to challenges voiced by political opponents, before the speech, that the federal government would actively participate in the affairs of the restructured company, he stated that he had “no interest” in running GM, and that the federal government would “refrain from exercising its rights” as a corporate shareholder for the most part. In particular, he stated that the federal government would not exercise its rights as a shareholder to dictate “what new type of car to make.” He stated that he expected the restructured GM to make “high quality, safe, and fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow,” and several times described what he anticipated as “better” and “fuel-efficient” cars, after a streamlining of GM’s brands.
He said to the general public that “I will not pretend that the hard times are over.” He described the financial hardship that some — shareholders, communities based around GM plants, GM dealers, and others — would undergo as a “sacrifice for the next generation” on their parts, so that their children could live in “an America that still makes things,” concluding that one day the United States might return to a time when the maxim (a widely-repeated mis-quotation of what Charles Erwin Wilson once testified before the U.S. Senate when nominated for the position of Secretary of Defense) would once more be true that “what is good for General Motors is good for the United States of America.”

The 15-year-old who killed Christopher Currie was Ngatai Rewiti of Otahuhu, Auckland. He has been found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter at the High Court of Auckland today, July 6. He was unable to be named earlier due to name suppression but after the verdict was heard Justice Helen Winkelmann lifted name suppression.
Rewiti will be given his sentence September 6.
The jury took four hours to reach the verdict after the four-day trial.
He was facing murder charges after dropping an eight-kilogram concrete block onto a car travelling on the Auckland motorway, killing the driver.
