Show Off Your Individuality With Custom Designed Jewelry

byPhineas Gray

One of the things we all desire in life is to be recognized as an individual. One size does not fit all and we have no wish to be cookie cutter human beings. From the time we’re in school, and well throughout adulthood, we want the world to see our uniqueness. We do this is through our clothing, hairstyles, our tastes in music, movies, and books, even down to the food we eat; we’re always trying to show the world that there is something special about us.

Another way to display uniqueness is by the jewelry we wear. There are the more outrageous jewelry fashion statements, such as multiple piercings all over the body. But if that isn’t for you, how can you show your individuality in the jewelry department? By choosing custom made jewelry instead of run of the mill department store jewelry that everyone else owns, of course!

Custom made jewelry allows you to show your style to the world. It also gives you the opportunity to exercise your artistic abilities. If you are half way decent at drawing, you can think up a design and then make it come alive on paper. What an exciting process! You think it up, you draw it, you create it, and then you wear it. No one else will have that piece of jewelry because it all came from you! Now, if you aren’t artistic, but you still have a gorgeous jewelry design in your head, you can probably describe the design fairly accurately to an artist friend or the jeweler.

From there, if you are an artistic soul, you can actually buy the materials and make the jewelry yourself. However, most of us aren’t quite that talented, so the best option is to take the design to the jeweler and have them make it for you. This is such a fun part of the process! You get to pick which metal you want the jewelry to be made out of – popular right now is white gold, but you can also select metals such as sterling silver and platinum, or go back to gold and use a two tone look with white and rose gold for example, talk about unique! Then you pick the stones. Of course, there is the classic diamond, which will add brilliance to your custom piece. There are also the colored stones – the deep blue sapphire, the rich garnet, the royal amethyst. The list is pretty endless. Besides the basics just mentioned, there are also color variations within each stone type. So you might decide you want a yellow sapphire, for example. It’s custom, so the choice is yours! Another fun thing to add to custom jewelry is colored diamonds such as blue, yellow and black. They really add some pop to certain designs.

When you want to express your unique personality, the possibilities are endless with custom made jewelry.

An eight-month old boy, Andrew, was attacked and killed by a Doberman Pinscher in Brooklyn, New York. The dog was a three-year old named Mackabee, who is also neutered.

The grandmother was babysitting the boy. While she was in the kitchen she heard the boy scream and ran next door to a neighbor for help. The neighbor took the dog off the boy, rescued him and brought him to his house to try and perform CPR on the boy, while he called 911 for help.

Police said the baby’s head was in bad shape and the dog broke the boy’s skull. Andrew was sent to Kings County Medical.

The doctors tried to save his life by working on him for nearly an hour, but the boy died at 3:06 pm local time. The parents of the child were not home at the time of the incident. The dog was shot with a tranquilizer and was sent to a care center. The city Department of Health is investigating. The dog may have to be put down because of the incident.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the Doberman Pinscher is not frequently involved in fatal attacks on humans in comparison to several other dog breeds such as German Shepherds , Rottweilers and others.

Today, June 29, the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) decided to throw out the 35 complaints made against a South Park episode. Three of the 35 were from church societies. The South Park episode in question was aired in February and depicted a statue of the Virgin Mary menstruating. The episode was named Bloody Mary.

That episode received the highest number of complaints the BSA has ever received since starting in 1989. And C4, the broadcaster, received the highest number of viewers since it started in 2003.

The complaints received state that the broadcaster breached a number of standards in the Free To Air Television Code of Broadcasting Practice but the BSA responded by saying that it is within the broadcasters freedom of expression.

C4 and the BSA both agree that people were given offence by the episode. C4 chose not to screen the episode again. The broadcast of the programme was protected by the Bill of Rights Act 1990.

The BSA did note that the programme was not a direct attack on Catholics but was to satirise the belief in miracles from statues. The programme was deliberately provocative. The BSA says, “But showing disrespect does not amount to the sort of vicious or vitriolic attack normally associated with the denigration standard.”

2008 TICA highlights open source applications at Linux Forum & Expo

Posted on September 7, 2022September 8, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Leading up to the 2008 Taipei Computer Applications Show (TICA), the 8th-annual Linux Forum, accompanied with Linux Expo Pavilion, started yesterday July 30 at Taipei World Trade Center Conference Roon 3 & 4 to promote the open source applications in Taiwan.

With popularity of OLPC and Eee PC, mobile applications, low-price PCs, embedded systems, and enterprise applications are enrolled into the Linux Forum by forum organizer, Industrial Development Bureau of Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Republic of China.

Since Linux-related solutions were promoted at Softex Taipei 2008 by Taipei Computer Association, as well as the organizer of TICA and Softex shows, executives from industrial, academical, and governmental people mostly cautioned the importance of Linux, which had also become another choice to be built inside a computer after OLPC and Eee PC.

As several required functions from business software are built in some open source software, software and platforms complied with open source had become the second choice for consumers. UPP, an open source platform built by United Daily News Digital Corporation, is a typical example on open source application integrated to a USB flash drive.

Apart from basic applications, some companies also demonstrated some examples of deploying and programming on a Linux-based platform. In addition, some experts recommended enterprises to consider user needs before introducing Linux as the desktop platform in the enterprise.

After the Linux Forum, the Linux Expo will also showcase solutions of open source at TICA.

Sarbanes Oxley In Europe: The Eu Data Protection Directive Vs. Sarbanes Oxley Whistleblower Protection

Posted on September 6, 2022September 7, 2022Categories Legal Services

By George Lekatis

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, adopted as a reaction to corporate scandals, has a significant impact on European companies. The reason is simple: Hundreds of European-headquartered companies are dually listed on two stock exchanges, one in Europe and the other in the United States. 470 non-US companies are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with a combined market capitalization of $3.8 trillion, 30 per cent of the total value of capitalization of companies quoted on the exchange.

EU Data Protection Directive

What is personal data (according to EU)? Personal data can be any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person (directly or indirectly): Name, telephone number, photos. Data specific to his physical, physiological, mental, economic, cultural or social identity. What is processing of personal data? Any operation performed upon personal data whether or not by automatic means

Data Controllers must adhere to the following rules: Data must be relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose for which they are processed. Data must be accurate.

Data controllers are required to provide reasonable measures for data subjects to rectify erase or block incorrect data about them. The directive prohibits transfer of personal information to countries outside the EU, which lack adequate protection of privacy.

Sarbanes Oxley

Section 301. Public company audit committees: Each audit committee shall establish procedures for:

(A) The receipt, retention, and treatment of complaints received by the issuer regarding accounting, internal accounting controls, or auditing matters; and

(B) The confidential, anonymous submission by employees of the issuer of concerns regarding questionable accounting or auditing matters

The challenge

How a US company with offices throughout the EU can comply with the notice and choice principles of EU Data Protection laws while simultaneously complying with the whistle blower requirements under Sarbanes Oxley?

How can we have both:

1. A Sarbanes Oxley hotline reporting service for employees to use anonymously, and

2. A Data Protection control: Data subjects must learn, rectify, erase or block incorrect data about them.

The problems

On 14 June 2005 the French Data Protection Authority refused to authorize the use of anonymous whistleblower hotlines. The French Authority’s view was that such hotlines are “disproportionate to the objectives sought and the risks of slanderous denunciations and the stigmatization of employees who were the subjects of an ethics alert.”

In a similar decision a German labor court ruled that parts of an employee code of conduct inviting employees to report misconduct to a whistleblowers hotline breached German labor law.

Early indications from the UK Information Commissioners Office (ICO) are that they would decline to follow the French and German approach. In contrast to the French and German decisions, the ICO’s view is that the appropriate use of such helpline by organizations would not, in principle, raise data protection concerns.

However, where organizations misuse such anonymous hotlines for inappropriate information gathering purposes there may be data protection implications.

Recommendations

Companies that are publicly traded in the United States and also have operations in the European Union must be very careful with the whistleblower provisions of the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

First of all, before implementing Sarbanes Oxley hotline reporting services, companies need to ask for permission from the local Data Protection Authority.

Complaints must be processed inside the European Union. Companies need to establish local investigation procedures. The suspected person would be given the opportunity to comment within two days. In the event that the investigation shows that the allegations were unfounded, the data must be deleted within two days of the case closure. If the allegations are determined to be well-founded, then the file would be kept for one to five years after the case was closed (depending on management level).

Can EU really protect employees from the whistleblower provisions?

No. If a U.S. public company lists on its website or intranet site that it has a telephone number or email address where anonymous complaints can be received, even if that site is not addressed to or publicized in EU, an employee in Europe may still go to the site and file an anonymous complaint.

‘Freedom Tower’ renamed ‘1 World Trade Center’

Posted on September 6, 2022September 7, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Saturday, March 28, 2009

The 108-floor central component of the new World Trade Center in New York City has been officially renamed 1 World Trade Center, ending the Freedom Tower moniker it had sported since 2003.

Freedom Tower was envisioned as a symbol of America’s victory over terrorism. It is currently on track for completion in 2013, with 10 floors partially finished so far.

Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia commented on the change, “It’s the one that is easiest for people to identify with — and frankly, we’ve gotten a very interested and warm reception to it.”

Former Governor George Pataki, who revealed the Freedom Tower name nearly six years ago, was critical of the switch, saying “The Freedom Tower is not simply another piece of real estate and not just a name for marketing purposes.”

1 World Trade Center has been the building’s legal name and address for the past two years, with the public change precipitated by the ramp up of construction and the commencement of lease marketing.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg seemed ambivalent to the change, saying “I would like to see it stay the Freedom Tower, but it’s their building, and they don’t need me dumping on it. If they could rent the whole thing by changing the name, I guess they’re going to do that, and they probably, from a responsible point of view, should. From a patriotic point of view, is it going to make any difference?”

The change was approved following the signing of a two-decades-long lease by a Chinese real estate company, which plans to occupy floors 64 through 69. Other future tenants include the U.S. General Services Administration and the New York State Office of General Services.

Severe sandstorm strikes Beijing, China

Posted on August 31, 2022September 1, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, March 21, 2010

A severe sandstorm has struck north-west China over the past few weeks, reaching Beijing on Saturday morning. The sandstorm, which covered homes, streets, and cars in dust, has left the sky a murky yellow. The air quality was rated as level five. Beijing’s Weather Bureau issued a warning for the sandstorm, and advised citizens to stay in their homes until it passes. As much as 1500 micrograms per cubic meter of dust were reported to be airborne.

Beijing has experienced unusually cold weather this year, with temperatures below freezing at night, even after the start of spring. The sandstorm is affecting more than 50 million people, and forecasters do not see signs of it stopping soon. The desertification of the western China and the Mongolian steppes has made the annual spring sandstorm become worse in the recent years, reaching countries such as South Korea and Japan. The sandstorm has turned the rain and snow yellow.

The storm also impacted Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Hebei for a total of 270 million people over an area of 1.8 million square kilometers. It is expected the storm will last until Monday.

Human Qualities For Machine Translation Will The Dream Come True

Posted on August 31, 2022September 1, 2022Categories Bulk Materials Handling

Submitted by: Roger Mazzella

The use of machine translation (MT) has become essential in these times, except obviously in literary translation where euphemisms, idioms and metaphors remain in the human translator s domain. If there is nothing that can replace human understanding, then there is nothing that can replace the machine in terms of productivity. In the translation industry, work volume is constantly increasing, but the number of professional translators remains stable. Productivity is now a crucial key factor. It not only caused the standardization of the whole translation process, but it also led to automation of translation itself.

Let s go through the main differences between computer-assisted translations (CAT) and MT. The first, CAT, consists of specialized tools dedicated to professional translators that make their work easier mainly by means of a database (TM). The second, MT, is essentially based on the use of the machine. Its existence dates back to the 50 s and its functionality has been continually improved since then. Who hasn t tried it on a professional or personal level? Online free tools like Systran, Google Translate, Babel Fish, Reverso, and Prompt are not tailored for professional purposes, but they do help to decipher a message in a foreign language or to understand its basic meaning. In any case, they cannot convey any linguistic subtleties: puns, idiomatic expressions, synonyms, etc. Aspects like style, fluency, writing quality are often left out.

However, companies specializing in machine translation look to broaden their target users to multinational firms and translation professionals such as agencies and freelancers. These professionals use programs and server software specially designed for business use, like Systran and its new hybrid machine translation engine or Translator Toolkit for Google Translate. These new tools, which are generally not free, are intended for professionals and are now able to provide an overall satisfactory translation quality.

In order to stay in tune with those companies politics and to answer to the needs of some of the biggest multinational firms, SDL, the world leader in Global Information Management specialized in CAT solutions, decided to take a big step in terms of machine translation it acquired in mid July Language Weaver, a pioneer in statistical machine translation. SDL s baby, SDL Trados Studio 2009 SP2, combines translation memories with machine translation; in other words, human professional translation and machine translation in order to handle more volume in less time and with a higher quality.

What about the role of translators? Is their future at stake? Will machine translation be the end of freelance translators?

According to experts and market analysts, the translation industry still has a bright future ahead: contents are constantly increasing (they estimate twice the volume for forthcoming years), particularly for online contents, in particular because Internet users search for contents in their native language. SDL forecasts that customers will be able to reduce their costs by about 30% – 50%, accelerating the contents time-to-market.

Despite that, translators can be reassured. Machine translation represents only 1% of the whole translation market nowadays.

All this leads to believe that we are on the right track: machine translation is now the professional translators best ally as it will allows for combining speed, volume and quality.
