MV Rachel Corrie seized by Israeli Naval Forces

The 1,200-ton MV Rachel Corrie, an Irish aid ship, was seized by the Israeli Naval Forces, as it attempted to challenge the blockade of Gaza. It was seized in international waters, about 20 miles (30 kilometers) from Gaza’s shore.

The military said its forces boarded ship from the sea, not helicopters and didn’t meet any resistance. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said: “No contact has yet been made with the kidnapped passengers but we have learned that they have been taken to Holon detention centre where they could be deported as early as tonight.”

Passengers include Irishman Dennis Halliday, a former assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Northern Irish Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, and a group of Irish and Malaysian pro-Palestinian activists.

The ship, named in honor of American peace activist Rachel Corrie, contains support including: toys, school supplies, wheelchairs, medical equipment and cement, a material that Israel has restricted from entry into Gaza. The crew had rejected an offer to unload its cargo in Israel and accompany it across the border.

The Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign initially organised the ship. Jenny Graham, a Free Gaza Movement (FGM) activist, assured that everything aboard the ship had been inspected in Ireland. A FGM activist Greta Berlin, based in Cyprus, said: “We are an initiative to break Israel’s blockade of 1.5 million people in Gaza. Our mission has not changed and this is not going to be the last flotilla.”

This comes after the death of nine activists when Israeli commandos raided the ‘Gaza Freedom Flotilla’ that planned to breach the Gaza blockade.

Protect Your Lungs

by

Lungs are one of the most important parts of your body, which helps you to breathe. We intake oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. The quality of air that we intake results in the good or bad health of our lungs. There are many types of lung diseases like asthma, bronchitis, allergy, lung cancer, Sarcoidosis, Interstitial lung disease, Tuberculosis, sleep apnea etc. There are different causes for these diseases but the following are the basic points that can be considered to protect the lung disease.

1.If you don’t smoke, don’t start!

2.If you smoke or use tobacco, quit. Quitting is the most important thing you can do to keep your lungs healthy and prevent disease. Smoking damages your lungs and increases your risk for a number of diseases including lung cancer. It’s never too late to quit.

3.Teach your children about the dangers of smoking and be a role model by not smoking or by quitting now.

4.Avoid second-hand smoke. Breathing the smoke from cigarettes and pipes increases your risk for the same diseases that affect people who smoke. Don’t allow smoking in your home, in the car, or at work.

5.Many lung diseases are highly contagious so one has to make sure that they wash their and hands and cover their coughs and sneezes as this may result in common viral infections such as cough, cold and flu. Wash your hands properly as your hands can carry a lot of germs and your chances of falling ill may increase.

6.Do your best to control outdoor air pollution and keep the air we breathe clean.

7.Learn about indoor air pollution and what you can do to reduce your exposure. For example, turn on the exhaust fan when you cook and avoid using aerosol products (e.g. aerosol can of hair spray).

8.Regular physical exercise is good for your whole body and especially your lungs. Exercise makes your lungs stronger and better.

9.Pay attention to your health at work. Avoid breathing toxic fumes from chemicals, solvents, and paints. Wear a protective mask when you work with chemicals and report unsafe working conditions.

10.At work or at home stay away from asbestos. Always wear protective clothing including a facemask if you are working with asbestos.

11.Check if there are high levels of Radon gas at your home or workplace. People working in mines are often exposed to Radon gas. Kits are found in hardware stores that help in measuring the amount of Radon gas at home.

12.Eat a healthy diet. Use a plenty of fruits and green vegetables in your diet.

13.The Indian way of Yoga, Pranayam (Breathing exercise) is also very helpful in protecting your lungs.

Ukranian railway accident generates huge phosphor cloud

Posted on July 29, 2022July 30, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

An alarm for heavy chemical pollution has been issued in the Lviv region, Ukraine, where yesterday evening a railway disaster led to a fire involving 15 containers of liquid yellow phosphorus.

Extinguishing the fire proved extremely difficult because water cannot be used: in contact with phosphorus, water creates poisonous gas. It took six hours before the flames were extinguished. Gas was generated nonetheless, and at the moment the poisoned area extends about 90 sq. km. The casualties count is already heavy: 20 people are reported injured, 13 of them in critical condition. They have been carried to the Lviv hospital. Podrobnosti reports that the fire started when one of the containers started to leak and the phosphor caught fire.

The poisoned area includes 14 villages. From the five villages that are closer to the disaster area some 800 people have already been evacuated. Half of the evacuees had to manage on their own as there was not enough public transport for all.

At the moment there is no available data about the wind direction or next expected movements of the phosphorus cloud. Special firemen units remain on place to control the possibility of a new fire, while the administration of the Lviv Oblast tries to forecast the possible short- and mid-term evolution of the situation.

The Ukrainian Railways have officially excluded the possibility of a terrorist act as a cause for the disaster.

Podrobnosti reports the deadly dose of yellow phosphor at 0.1 g. According to that source, when poisoning living beings, phosphor causes liver necrosis and attacks the bones and spinal cord.

Still no action in standoff in Ontario town

Posted on July 27, 2022July 28, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Monday, April 17, 2006

Seven weeks after citizens of the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve repossessed land near Caledonia, Ontario, on February 28, the Ontario Provincial Police, who have authority from a court to arrest the protesters for contempt of court, have yet to act.

On April 11, more than 50 police cruisers, two paddy wagons, and several vans gathered outside an abandoned school on Unity Road in Caledonia. However, reports from last night are that visible police presence is minimal, with just a few police cruisers parked down the road from the protest site.

Before the site was blocked, Henco Industries had begun construction on 10 luxury homes out of a total of 71 scheduled to be built as part of the $6 million Douglas Creek Estates subdivision.

The tract of land under dispute was registered as a land claim by the Six Nations Band Council in 1987 but its status has yet to be settled. The land originally made up part of a large land grant given in 1784 to the Six Nations for services rendered during the American War of Independence. The government and the developer claim that the Six Nations surrendered title in 1841, but the Band disputes this.

The protesters are demanding a nation-to-nation dialogue with the Canadian government and continue to call for a peaceful resolution. Some protesters, however, have stated that if the OPP forcefully try to remove them, they will defend their land with force.

“If they break the peace, we’ll do what we have to do,” said protester Dick Hill. “Things are very tense. We are trying to defend our lands, which were taken from us. Every time we try to stand up for who we are and what we are, they come and drag us away.”

An injunction was issued to the development company a month ago that allowed for the protesters to be removed. Police have not enforced the injunction.

However, David Ramsay, Ontario’s Aboriginal Affairs Minister, said that the province was going to have a meeting with both protesters and developers in an attempt to address their concerns.

“This is a very serious situation. I have to be very hopeful that we’re going to see a peaceful end to this situation. We think we can resolve this by negotiating, and by talking so that’s what we’re doing,” added Ramsay.

MetLife to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup

Posted on July 27, 2022July 28, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Monday, January 31, 2005

Metlife announced on 01/31/05 that they were going to acquire Travelers Life and Annuity from Citigroup. Travelers Life and Annuity is an insurance underwriter. MetLife is a large life insurance and annuities underwriter. MetLife will have to borrow a lot of money to pay for the company, so rating agencies like S&P warn that the AA credit rating of MetLife might be lowered. This would cause the interest rates at which all of MetLife’s debt must be repaid to increase.

Citigroup committed to continue distributing Travelers life insurance and annuities through its Smith Barney stock brokers, Primerica agents, and Citibank branches.

Citigroup was previously known as Travelers Insurance before it bought Citicorp. First the Property and Casualty business of Travelers was spun off, and now the life insurance division has been sold off. This is primarily because insurance underwriters get a lower price to earnings multiple from the stock market because of the cycles and uncertainty associated with the insurance business. Also, having an insurance underwriter and a bank together does not usually create “cross-sell” opportunities, because consumers and businesses almost always buy life insurance and annuities through brokers who have a duty to give them other options. Citigroup will continue to sell insurance through its brokers as before.

Enhance Your Room With A Closet Door Mirror

Posted on July 27, 2022July 28, 2022Categories Industrial Equipment

By John Francis

Mirrors are a good addition to any room. They immediately make the room look larger, which is one reason you often see mirrored walls at restaurants and other places of business. Their light-reflecting properties brighten up a room. If you have a bedroom that needs brightening but you don’t have any space, try a closet door mirror.

There are two ways to add mirrors to your closet door. You can buy a kit that allows you to add mirrors to your closet doors. This is a reasonably-priced option, but make sure to install the mirrors well so they don’t fall off.

Another option is to replace your closet doors with a closet door mirror. These doors, like traditional closet doors, come in a variety of styles and sizes. They tend to look better than attaching a mirror to an existing door, and you will have no worries about falling glass.

Their is a large variety of closet door mirrors to choose from. It’s easiest if you stay with the type of door you have now. In other words, if you have a bi-fold or tri-fold door, don’t try to replace it with a sliding door. You will find plenty of options using your existing style and track and won’t have to worry as much about getting the fit right.

You can buy closet door mirrors where the mirror covers the entire door. If you prefer, you can find doors that have a metal frame or a wood molding. There are several choices of wood frame to suit your style and the style of the room.

Closet door mirrors are reasonably priced. If you are building a new home and want to add them, the floor-to-ceiling variety can save you money because the contractor doesn’t have to take time to drywall and frame.

There are kits for mirrored closet doors that will help the door stay on the track, but not all kits offer this feature. When purchasing, you will be much more satisfied if you buy a door that doesn’t jump off the tracks.

A closet door mirror adds light, the feeling of space, and elegance to any bedroom. If you are on a budget and can afford only one home improvement, consider a closet door mirror. There are not many other improvements that add so much to a room for such a small cost.

Experiment on frozen sperm raises hopes of “restoring” extinct mammals

Posted on July 24, 2022July 25, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

According to Japanese and American scientists, healthy offspring have resulted from the injection of sperm into female mice from male mice that have been in a deep freeze for 15 years. The mice, as a whole, were kept frozen in temperatures of -20 degrees celsius.

Scientists at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Bioresource Center which is located in Tsukuba, Japan, say that cryogenic techniques were not used and that the mice were kept in a freezer.

Scientists also say that the sperm was not alive when it was thawed out. At least one out of every five females that were injected with the sperm, gave birth to healthy offspring which are also fertile.

“Obviously, those frozen [sperm] were all dead in the conventional sense. Motionless sperm had no chance whatsoever of fertilising in vivo or in vitro. Nevertheless, some of these, if not all, were … genomically intact, because they were able to produce apparently normal offspring,” said the researchers.

The idea behind the experiment is that scientists say that the results now make it possible to bring back prehistoric animals or extinct animals such as the woolly mammoth, but because any fully intact body found would have been frozen for over 10,000 years and would likely be too damaged organisms and bacterias. Endangered species such as elephants could also be reproduced, but scientists also say that the chances of an experiment like that of being successful are still “slim.”

“Restoration of extinct species could be possible if male individuals are found in permafrost. If sperm of extinct mammalian species, for example the woolly mammoth, can be retrieved from animal bodies that were kept frozen for millions of years in permanent frost, live animals might be restored by injecting them into oocytes [eggs] from females of closely related species,” said Dr. Narumi Ogonuki, head of the team who made the discovery.

Having affordable health care for your child will making sure they have regular checkups to insure good health and if something is not normal it will be addressed before it it allowed to continue untreated. There are some excellent government programs that make it very simple to keep kids insured. There is always Medicaid for parents that have little or no income. This is a wonderful thing for single parents that are going to school to improve their whole families future. Programs that help during these times of transition are incredibly helpful to families. This does not work so well for those families with more income. There are programs in place currently just for those families that have too much income to quality for free medical insurance. There is excellent subsidized health care for kids that make it possible for people to get their children to the doctor, dentist, or hospital when needed. Generally the coverage is based upon income and assets.Getting all the information you will need to see if you qualify is easier than the ole days and can be done from the comfort of your own home. Most all state and federal programs have websites to help anyone looking for information about anything thing they offer. Make sure you check with the state you are a resident of to get the right information. In most instances, you will be required to fill out some required basic financial information forms. You will most likely find it will take longer to find and include all the necessary paper work needed, make copies, and see that all are included to be sent out to the proper office. As most everyone knows, waiting for any response seems to make any process seem longer. When you finally do get a response, you will know what your monthly cost will be for coverage. This response will be followed by information on your children providers, all the rules you are expected to follow for hospital or specialist care.

Texas governor bans COVID-19 vaccine mandate by any ‘entity’

Posted on July 24, 2022July 25, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

In an executive order on Monday, Texas governor Greg Abbott banned any “entity in Texas” from requiring vaccination against the COVID-19 virus, claiming that “countless Texans” object to receiving a vaccine against COVID-19 on grounds related to “personal conscience, based on a religious belief, or for medical reasons, including prior recovery from COVID-19.”

In Executive Order GA-40, Abbott states, “COVID-19 vaccines are strongly encouraged for those eligible to receive one, but must always be voluntary for Texans.”

The governor’s order comes after United States President Joe Biden announced last month that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) within the U.S. Department of Labor was developing an emergency rule to mandate vaccination or weekly testing for employers with 100 or more employees.

Abbott’s order cites that “in yet another instance of federal overreach, the Biden Administration is now bullying many private entities into imposing COVID-19 vaccine mandates, causing workforce disruptions that threaten Texas’s continued recovery from the COVID-19 disaster.”

Abbott called on the Texas Legislature to pass a law against COVID-19 vaccine mandates, and has said he would rescind the order if the Legislature did so.

Previously, Abbott blocked state and local agencies from requiring vaccines for their employees, but allowed private businesses to require mandates of their own.

The Texas Tribune noted that while Abbott has barred COVID-19 vaccination mandates, the state allows primary and secondary schools as well as post-secondary institutions to require vaccinations for a variety of diseases for their students.

Facebook Inc. and Google parent company Alphabet Inc. both employ large numbers of people in Texas, and both companies have called for proof of vaccination from their employees. The largest U.S. air carrier American Airlines, based in Fort Worth, Texas, last week called for its 100,000 employees to be vaccinated or face termination.
