Wales widens smoking ban, includes at hospitals, schools and playgrounds

Today, Wales extended the prohibition on smoking at hospitals, schools, and playgrounds, with violators to face a £100 fine. Wales is the first of the UK nations to introduce this ban.

This is in addition to various restrictions on the practice, including a ban on smoking in enclosed public spaces in place since 2007 and a ban on smoking in cars with children in place since 2015.

The Welsh government, governed by left-wing party Welsh Labour, said the measure was to discourage adults and children alike from smoking by making it appear less normal, and encourage the already partaking to quit.

Two hospitals in the country’s south have installed a button-activated speaker system to remind people hospitals are smoke-free. In 2016, a similar mechanism was tried at hospitals across Wales, where an announcement recorded by local school children would play upon pressing a button.

Minister for Mental Health, Wellbeing, and the Welsh Language Eluned Morgan said she was “immensely proud to have brought into force this law”, and “[t]his legislation will benefit the health of future generations in Wales, as fewer children will be exposed to smoking”. She concluded, “[w]e need to do everything we can to combat the harmful effects of smoking.”

The government was criticised by many smokers rights groups. Simon Clark, Director of the Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco compared the law to “taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut”, saying: “There is no evidence that smoking in the open air poses a risk to anyone else’s health, including children.” The director further explained, “Banning smoking on hospital grounds is particularly unjust because it targets smokers who may be stressed and in need of a comforting cigarette. Most smokers use their common sense and don’t smoke around small children. They don’t need politicians telling them how to behave.”

Wikinews contacted Eluned Morgan’s office to know more about this ban.

In order to give wings to your marketing plans, you must consult a reputed online marketing company. The marketing company that you select should demonstrate a perfect understanding of the different online marketing procedures and techniques that work collaboratively. They should exhibit an understanding of email campaigns, copywriting, affiliate programs, newsletters, content distribution and research, among other marketing options. In this way, they can even recommend several ways to get your online business to the top in terms of visibility. The only way to find a reliable Online Marketing Company is to conduct a comprehensive market research. Check out whether the selected company has the right potential to make your marketing dreams come true. The very first thing you need to check is the number of years the company is in business. The more experienced the company is, the better services you can expect. Next thing to check is the range of services the company offers. A large number of marketing companies that are not well prepared and ready for the internet or that use unethical marketing methods, hardly last long in business. They rapidly go under and will definitely build a bad reputation for themselves. So, look at how long a company has been in business before engaging their services. Another most important thing to check is the use of marketing techniques and policies as these should be completely ethical and market-friendly. If not, it can spoil your entire marketing efforts. So, be careful while choosing a good online marketing service company and check all the related details before making a final call. The white hat techniques ensure a long term result with no fear of getting blocked by the search engines. On the other hand, Black hat techniques give very fast results which are also very short term. These put your business at risk of getting blacklisted, banned and de-listed from the search engines, hence no visibility.

20 tons of cocaine seized by US Coast Guard

Posted on April 26, 2022April 27, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has seized 20 tons or nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of over US$500 million in what authorities call one of the largest cocaine busts in history.

Three busts in total were made in a period of nearly one month. The first on February 19, off the coast of Mexico, March 18 off the coast of Panama and on March 25, also off the coast of Panama.

In the first bust on February 19, “the Ecuadorian-flagged fishing vessel Don Juan K was approached in the Pacific Ocean February 19 off the coast of Mexico while allegedly offloading cocaine into “go-fast” (cigarette-style boat) boats. The fishing vessel’s crew apparently set fire to Don Juan K in an attempt to destroy the evidence and flee in the go-fasts. The USCGC Sherman stopped the go-fasts and recovered about 900 pounds of cocaine as Don Juan K sank. The 14 crew members are being processed for further legal action,” said a statement on the USCG’s website.

The second bust on March 18 yielded nearly 40,000 pounds of cocaine.

“The 330-foot Panamanian-flagged motor vessel Gatun was interdicted in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 18 off the coast of Panama while heading north toward the United States. Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded the vessel and found 765 bales of cocaine weighing approximately 38,000 pounds in two shipping containers. Gatun was escorted back to Panama and its 14 crew members processed for further legal action,” added the statement.

In the third bust on March 25, at least 2,000 pounds of cocaine was seized, also from a ship off Panama’s coast.

“[The] Sherman’s crew stopped and boarded a small stateless go-fast in the Pacific Ocean Mar. 25 off the coast of Panama following a short chase, in which, the go-fast attempted to flee at a high rate of speed. Approximately 2,000 pounds of cocaine was found aboard the go-fast and its four crew members were processed for further legal action,” said the statement.

Several agencies both in the U.S. and in other countries in Central and South America and will continue to investigate the extent of the drug ring.

“The Coast Guard works in close coordination with Joint Interagency Task Force South, U.S. Attorney’s office, Panama Express South, DEA, FBI, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Protection, as well as the Departments of Justice, State and Homeland Security on counter drug operations in the Pacific Ocean near Central and South America. These drug smuggling routes are some of the most active, yielding roughly 70 percent of the cocaine seized annually by the Coast Guard,” added the statement.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo clarifies ‘nuke Mecca’ comments

Representative Tom Tancredo (R-CO) has clarified his earlier statement that “you could take out their holy sites,” in the event of a nuclear attack upon the U.S. by Islamic terrorists. Rep. Tancredo has refused to make any apologies, saying “When we bombed Hiroshima, when we bombed Dresden, we punished a lot of people who were not necessarily (guilty). Not every German was a member of the Nazi Party. You do things in war that are ugly.” However, Tancredo emphasized that he was speaking hypothetically and not necessarily suggesting policy.

The remarks, made in a July 15th radio interview, hosted by Pat Campbell of WFLA in Orlando, Florida, have drawn support from conservatives groups such as Northeast Intelligence Network and Free Republic, and have offended the American Muslim community. In the interview, Tancredo discussed his request for information from the Justice Department regarding the claim of evangelical Christian journalist Joseph Farah that al-Qaida has smuggled multiple nuclear weapons into the U.S.

Reviewing The Necessary Steps For Concrete Demolition In Minnesota

Posted on April 20, 2022April 21, 2022Categories Civil Excavation And Demolition Services

byAlma Abell

In Minnesota, land developers need demolition services to manage existing structures. These services allow them to remove all remnants of the existing building and clear the land for further projects. However, these projects require an advance understanding of legal requirements. A local contractor provides Concrete Demolition in Minnesota for these land developers today.

Acquiring the Right Permits

The contractor understands the necessary legal requirements for the demolition project. They must begin by acquiring the necessary permits to perform these services. The permits allow them to use heavy-duty equipment in residential or commercial areas. They also provide approval for the demolition team to utilize explosives when necessary. The contractor acquires these permits on behalf of the land developer and takes responsibility for any injuries that may occur during the project.

Notifying the Public

The demolition team is required by law to issue a public notice in advance. These notices are placed in the local newspaper to make residents aware of the possible dangers presented. It also indicates if the roadways around the project are closed during the project. This presents them with conclusive information to prevent the possibility of accidents and personal injuries.

Demolishing the Property

The team evaluates the property and ensures that it is clear on the day of the project. They level the property according to federal regulations and manage the full demolition. This includes clearing off the property at different stages of the project. This prevents the possibility of injuries for their staff and passersby.

Waste Management Requirements for the Project

Select demolition teams provide their own waste management services. When this is the case, they situate dumpsters around the work site to remove debris appropriately. This reduces the risk of unstable conditions that could lead to injuries.

In Minnesota, land developers acquire helpful services through demolition teams. These teams present them with effective and safe removal of buildings that are no longer viable. They demolition the property according to state and federal regulations. They also remove all waste products during different stages of the project. Land developers who need concrete demolition in Minnesota should contact Nitti Rolloff & Demolition Services Inc for more details now.

Police evict Vestas protesters

Posted on April 19, 2022April 20, 2022Categories Uncategorized

Friday, August 7, 2009

The remaining six workers staging an occupation in Newport, Isle of Wight, England have left peacefully after police entered their factory.

After barricading the office which has served as a living quarters for 19 nights against police entry, three of the workers, Justin Moody, Mark Smith, and Dave Arbuthnott, exited via a fire escape escorted by security staff; two, Ian Terry and Mark Flower, abseiled down the factory’s wall; and Jaymie Rigby jumped thirty feet from a balcony to the bushes below. Rigby was examined at a local hospital after the jump but was found to be in good condition and released. The six were processed by police but not arrested.

The six, who as part of a group of around 25 entered the factory on the evening July 20, had been conducting their occupation in a bid to get the government to nationalise the factory. Despite rising profits and rising orders, Vestas has decided to close their production facilities in the United Kingdom and most of their facilities in Denmark, at a cost of 1900 jobs, in order to concentrate on growth in North and South America and in Asia. The Vestas factory in Newport does not produce blades for the UK market and the company has refused both a £6 million grant and offers from the government to assist the company in re-tooling the plant for production of British blades.

The company, in turn, blames the British government for making it too hard to obtain planning permission for on-shore wind farms. A Vestas spokesman, commenting to the BBC about the end of the occupation, said, “we have always understood the frustrations of the workers but have been surprised at the length of this action.”

The evicted workers say that, after spending time with their families, they plan to return to the protests against Vestas, joining the impromptu camp of hundreds of protesters which has sprung up outside the factory gates. The Vestas occupiers have received support from a broad coalition of left-wing political parties, trade unions, environmental groups, the Tory-dominated Isle of Wight Council, and a handful of MPs; today, the last major left party which had not joined the coalition, Arthur Scargill‘s Socialist Labour Party, released a statement saying

does it make sense that Vestas should be closed and the green ecology so beloved of this government should be transported here from the far corners of the world? The only sensible demand is for the nationalisation of the entire energy industry.

The SLP’s spokesman, Alan Johnson, went on to tell Wikinews that the occupiers “have our full support.” None of the three large parties dominating the British parliament have backed the Vestas workers, however, although the ruling Labour Party has recently sponsored talks between among the coalition of trade unions supporting the occupiers.

Police served the remaining occupiers notice to vacate the premises yesterday at noon; Vestas’s first attempt at obtaining a warrant was stymied in court when the defence successfully argued that notice requiring possession had not been correctly served to the occupiers.

The occupiers lived in the factory twenty-four hours a day during the occupation, sleeping in a 1600-square-foot (149-square-metre) office, maintaining hygiene as well as possible in the factory’s bathrooms, and eating one small meal a day — initially from the contents of vending machines, then from what the company management supplied supplemented by whatever protesters were able to get over the fence surrounding the factory. The RMT, which has arranged legal representation for the Vestas occupiers, has accused Vestas of violating human rights and at one point said it would arrange to have a helicopter airlift food into the workers.

The end of the Newport occupation does not represent the end of unrest at Vestas’s facilities in the Isle of Wight, however. A number of workers at Vestas’s smaller plant in Cowes occupied the plant there on the evening of August 4, with activists from the RMT and environmental groups taking to the roof and waving flags proclaiming the occupation.

Virgin Rail train collides with car near Copmanthorpe, killing driver

A Virgin Trains train travelling at high speed collided with a car near Copmanthorpe, Yorkshire, England, killing the car’s driver.

The accident took place at approximately 20:55 GMT when the Class 220/221 train, travelling at close to 100mph, hit the car which was on the tracks. The train then partially derailed but remained upright, coming to a stop further down the tracks. The car driver is believed to have been killed instantly. No one on the train was injured.

The car was not at a level crossing. North Yorkshire Police said that the car had left the road, driven through a fence and ended up on the track.

The train was the 14:25 Virgin Voyager cross-country service from Plymouth to Edinburgh Waverley, capable of speeds up to 125mph, but was deccelerating on approach into York. There were 74 passengers on board.

The line between York and Leeds was closed for several hours, delaying other services. Virgin Spokesman Arthur Leathley told reporters that Network Rail hoped to have three of the four lines in that section of the track operational by Tuesday morning.
