2,000 face redundancy at English steelworks

Corus Group, the world’s fifth largest steel producer, announced on Friday that it may be forced to mothball its steelworks in Redcar, England. This move would threaten the jobs of the works’ 1,920 employees.

Corus may be forced to close its Teesside operations as a consortium has refused to honour a 10-year contract with Corus’ Teesside Cast Products, which accounted for 78% of the plant’s operations. Corus’ chief executive, Kirby Adams, said he was “extremely disappointed that the consortium members have seen fit to take this irresponsible action.”

Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, said “it is essential that Corus does everything it can legally, and with the government’s assistance, to reinstate the agreement”. Gordon Brown, the British Prime Minister, shared this view saying, “We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the contract is upheld.” Mandelson also said “we are not prepared to reconcile ourselves to the inevitable closure of this plant”.

The leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Councillor George Dunning, said “Today is like being hit by a mini earthquake compared to what’s happened in the past.”

Martin Callanan and Stephen Hughes, Tory, and Labour MEPs for North East England, supported the idea that the government should subsidise wages in the plant on a temporary basis. Hughes and Fiona Hall, Lib Dem MEP, suggested that the government should apply to the EU’s Globalisation Adjustment Fund. Hall said “if the worst comes to the worst and jobs are indeed lost, I trust the Government will change its mind and support an application to the European Globalisation Fund in order to fund skills training for those who have lost their jobs.”

This move could “bring to an end a fine heritage of steelmaking at Teesside”, according to Adams. Steelworks in Teesside, which previously belonged to British Steel and Dorman Long, produced steel for famous structures like the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Corus had said it was likely there would be a “very significant number of redundancies” and a 90-day consultation period is due to begin.

Corus’ owner, Tata Steel, are also facing difficulties with another UK operation, automobile company Jaguar Land Rover.

Bangladesh security tightened following Pilkhana massacre and Bashundhara City fire

Posted on December 8, 2017December 8, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Friday, March 20, 2009

Following the Pilkhana massacre which occurred February 25 and 26 leaving 74 dead and the inferno at the Bashundhara City shopping mall complex March 13 leaving seven dead, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said security measures are being tightened countrywide across Bangladesh.

Fire drills will be enacted at all key-point installations (KPI). Fire fighting systems will be examined by the fire brigade and the public works department (PWD) to ensure functionality. Security measures will be enhanced supplementing areas under private security such as at the Bashundhara City Complex.

The Fire Service and Civil Defence Department requires modernization and needs new equipment to fight fires past the sixth floor of buildings. The Fire Brigade says it needs turntable ladders, snorkels, foam-tenders, lighting units, emergency tenders, fireproof uniforms, and rescue ropes for fire fighting and rescue operations. Transportation to fires is also an issue due to narrow roads, low electrical wires and congestion.

The Bangladesh National Building Code requires fire fighting equipment installed in buildings over seven floors. This code is to be monitored by authorities to ensure compliance with the new guidelines and to make sure buildings are being maintained.

The Bashundhara City Complex opened Monday for shoppers two days after Friday’s blaze. A probe is underway to determine the cause of the fire and to assess structural damage.

Loss of life was minimized as the blaze broke out on a Friday, the beginning of the weekend in Bangladesh, so offices in the upper floors were empty. The lower eight floors are used for shopping and the upper floors are all Bashundhara Group offices.

The mall is valued at Tk 7.0 billion (US$100 million). It is not known if the complex is covered by fire insurance.

It is estimated that it will take over two years to rebuild the area damaged by flames which were burned down to a skeleton. Bashundhara City’s technical advisor, Latifur Rahman, estimated damages at Tk 2.0 billion (US$29m).

Only one television cameraman has been allowed in to film the burnt area. None of the 2,500 shops, cinemas or cafes were burnt by the inferno. The seventh and eighth floors still experience smoke damage, and there was water damage to merchandise.

A three member committee is currently investigating the cause of the fire which will consist of Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary of the ministry, representatives of the police, IGP Noor Muhammad, and fire brigade, Director General Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah. The committee is required to report within the week with their findings. The forensics department is also sifting through the burnt remains.

The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industries has also formed a committee which has begun interviewing witnesses and recording their testimony alongside the government committee.

It has been discovered that 150 closed circuit cameras were not being used when the fire started. Another mystery is why the mall fire fighting system has been found unused.

Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think….These matters seem to be mysterious

“In the shopping mall there is an ultra-technology elevator which runs even without electricity but we have found that locked,” Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, joint secretary (Police) of the home ministry, said. “Why the fire burnt so fiercely is a matter to think. We have to see if there was any incendiary substance there. These matters seem to be mysterious.”

Mall management has been asked to submit substances and items which would have been in the upper floors when the fire started. The fire erupted on the 17th floor and spread quickly to the two floors above and engulfed the three floors below. The aerial ladders belonging to the Fire Service and Civil Defence reached as high as the 13th floor of the 21-storey building.

Videos have been sent to the United States (US) for examination to assist in determining the cause of the fire and to help in the damage assessment. Experts from the US are expected to arrive soon.

Firefighters were brought to the rooftop of the 20-storey tower by helicopter. The only fatality in this operation was Baki Billa, a firefighter of Bashundhara City firefighting department, who fell when climbing down a rope from a helicopter to the roof of the building. Three other firefighters made the transition safely. At this same time, the chief security officer was safely rescued by the Bangladesh Air Force helicopter, a Bell 212. Six security officers of the complex also lost their lives.

Jersey child abuse case ‘was not covered up’

Tuesday, February 26, 2008

Frank Walker, the chief minister of Jersey, a United Kingdom Crown dependency off the coast of Normandy, France, denies that there was a cover up after a child’s remains were found.

The allegations of a cover-up stem from statements by Stuart Syvret. Syvret, the former Minister for Health and Social Services for Jersey, said that “It’s a continuum that we see. It’s a culture of cover-up and concealment and tragically the recent evidence is just the latest manifestation of that.”

It has come to light that Edward Paisnel, a notorious pedophile, used to visit the Haut de la Garenne children’s home dressed as Father Christmas. Paisnel in 1971, was given a sentence of 30 years for 13 counts of assault, rape and sodomy.

Syvret says he was dismissed from his ministerial position after highlighting the “torture” of 11 to 16-year-olds in the island’s care homes. He claimed he was “sacked for whistleblowing”.

Police are currently investigating twenty-seven cases of child abuse on the island and recently discovered the body of one child at a care home Haut de la Garenne in St. Martin, and with a potential six sites in the area where more bodies may be located. The home was closed in 1986 and since 2003 it has served as a youth hostel.

Jersey’s deputy police chief, Lenny Harper said “Part of the inquiry will be the fact that a lot of the victims tried to report their assaults but for some reason or another they were not dealt with as they should be.”

Harper added that “no evidence of a cover-up of any Jersey government” has been found. “We are looking at allegations that a number of agencies didn’t deal with things as perhaps they should.”

Syvret has encouraged the government of the United Kingdom to assign independent judges to oversee any cases that result from the investigations.

Builders originally uncovered a body at the care home in 2003 but it was only since an operation investigate child abuse started in 2006 that progress has been made. An ex-minister of the States of Jersey, the parliament of the island, has criticised the handling of the case, stating that abuse cases were mishandled.

Walker told senators that all necessary resources would be use to find the abusers. “None of us imagined that children in Jersey could be abused and mistreated in the way that is being suggested,” the BBC have quoted him as saying. “I express my shock and horror that these things have apparently happened within our island.”

Specialist police from the United Kingdom have been investigating after an enquiry turned up 140 sources verifying the claims of abuse.

“Metric tonne” of date rape drug was bound for US

Friday, June 2, 2006

Scottish police have arrested a man and a woman after finding Britain’s largest ever stash of Gamma-butyrolactone. The man in charge of the operation, Graeme Pearson, director of the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency, called the find “the most significant discovery of the drug in the UK.”

Denise Caron MacPherson, 45, and Hanan Rabin, 53, have been charged with exporting the drug, also known as GHB, to the United States between 19 April and 24 May. The news of the Scottish factory comes as a US study found drug use was involved in two-thirds of sex attacks, while 5 per cent were given an actual “date rape” drug.

Graham Rhodes for The Roofie Foundation, a helpline for victims of drug rape, said: “I am very relieved this has been recovered as in the wrong hands it is very dangerous. Not only is it used to spike the drinks of people to rape them but it’s also used to assault and rob people.”

Used by ravers, robbers and bodybuilders, the base chemical (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) was taken during a raid on a house and business in West Lothian. The haul would have been put on the United States illicit drug market and sold for fun and more sinister purposes.

In its non-powder form GHB is barely detectable: clear and having no smell it can be particularly potent with a few drops mixed into an alcoholic drink. Once a sufficient amount of the salty liquid has been ingested the victim can be knocked out within an hour.

While GHB is known both as “liquid ecstasy” and the date rapist’s “Plan A”, the versatile compound is also used by body builders instead of anabolic steroids, by dieters and as a sleeping aid.

In Britain, GHB is a “Class C” drug which means making it, holding it and selling it is punishable with up to two years in prison. The effects of rape, for which the drug is reportedly used, can last a lifetime. Jane Cumming, from support group Crisis, said she received an average of 4 calls a week from people claiming to be victims of date rape.

The pair, who were caught in Livingston, were accused of distributing the drug in Scotland from MacPherson’s house around the same time as they were exporting to the United States, while MacPherson was also charged with Cannabis possession.

An 89th minute goal by substitute Edin Dzeko gave Wolfsburg a 1-0 victory over Hansa Rostock today.

Wolfsburg Coach Felix Magath made a solitary change to his team which took an away point off Hamburg. Schäfer took the place of Quiroga at left back. The Hansa Rostock coach Frank Pagelsdorf saw no reason to change his team which took nine points from their last three games. Their last victory was against the defending champions Stuttgart.

The game began in a cautious manner, with Hansa Rostock defending in their own half, hoping to hit Wolfsburg on a counter attack. Wolfsburg tried to take the game to visitors from the former DDR, but they didn’t create any goalscoring chances during the opening minutes.

When a 0-0 draw looked inevitable, Wolfsburg secured all three points in the 89th minute.

After the Bundesliga break, Wolfsburg will travel to and play Hannover in the Niedersachsen derby.

FC Barcelona defeats Sevilla FC 5-4 to win UEFA Super Cup 2015

Saturday, August 15, 2015

On Wednesday, Catalonia-based football club FC Barcelona defeated Seville-based football club Sevilla 5–4 to win the 2015 UEFA Super Cup. The match was held in Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in the city of Tbilisi, Georgia. Pedro, who may leave for Manchester United, scored the winning goal of the match in the 115th minute. This was the fifth UEFA Super cup won by Barcelona.

Barcelona had stronger possession of the ball in front of Sevilla. The match saw nine yellow cards, four for Barcelona players and five for Sevilla players. A total of 41 fouls were committed in the match. A total of nine goals were scored in the match, with the first goal scored in the opening minutes of the game.

Barcelona defender Mascherano committed a foul in the 2nd minute and thus Sevilla got a free kick. Banega converted the free kick into goal in the 3rd minute of the game. Minutes later, Sevilla’s Krychowiak committed a foul and this early lead was soon equalised as Barcelona forward Lionel Messi scored a similar style free kick.

Krychowiak received a yellow card in the 14th minute and Barca were awarded another free kick for Banega’s foul on Rakiti?. Leo Messi converted this free kick into a goal, giving the lead to Barcelona after 16 minutes of game play. This was Messi’s 36th goal in 37 games in 2015.

Minutes before half time, Luis Suárez assisted Rafinha and the Brazilian tripled the lead for the Catalans. First half ended with scoreline 3–1 with only one booking.

Within ten minutes of the second half, Suárez scored the fourth goal in the 52nd making it a one-sided match. Five minutes later, Reyes scored a close ranged shot making the score 4–2. In the 63rd minute, Andrés Iniesta was substituted off for Sergi Roberto. Iniesta made his 550th appearance for Barcelona. After this substitution, the goal difference kept on dropping. In the 71st minute, Mathieu was booked for a foul on Vitolo. Referee awarded a penalty kick for Sevilla. Gameiro perfectly converted it into a goal making it 4–3.

Within the next ten minutes, Sevilla equalised with Barcelona. Konoplyanka scored an easy tap-in to bring Sevilla from 4–1 to 4–4. Within half an hour, the one-sided match changed into a tensed match.

Coke in the 87th minute and Banega in the 90+2 minute were booked for committing foul on Suárez. The game ended in 4–4. And thus it was extended to additional time.

Additional time saw five more yellow cards. Pedro was substituted in for Mascherano in the 93rd minute and in the next minute, he received a yellow card for foul on Vitolo. Barcelona won a free kick in the dying minutes of the game. Messi’s kick became an indirect assist to Pedro who netted it in the top corner. It was the winning goal of the game.

This was Pedro’s 99th goal in the Catalonia jersey. By this victory, Barcelona joined A.C. Milan as the most successful club. Both the teams have earned the title five times. This trophy was Messi’s and Iniesta’s 25th trophy with Barcelona. Messi was awarded Man of the match. After the match, he said, “We are delighted to start the season with this win, but it was tough […] The most important thing was to win the Super Cup to start well. Now we think of the Spanish Super Cup against Athletic Club”.

On Tuesday, Pedro was asked if he was leaving Barcelona. He replied “The answer is no. But it is a difficult, complicated situation. When you know you may leave it is difficult.” Pedro said it wan’t about money but the playing time. Pedro said “The truth is that I had a good chance to play. The coach has decided not to count on me. I don’t know, I don’t know if I will continue here […] Manchester? Yes, there are nice challenges on all sides. Today I’m here, and I’m happy […] And if I go, I will go with my head held high having always given everything.”

Canadian neighbourhood protected from bully for three years

Posted on December 7, 2017December 7, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Sunday, March 29, 2009

Ralph Scala was sentenced Saturday for 49 counts of mischief, criminal harassment, and uttering threats during seven years of neighbourhood bullying in Toronto, Ontario.

Scala, aged 36, slashed tires, smashed windows, and intimidated and insulted his neighbours.

“I had to go and calm her down when she found her property littered with dog refuse, dead squirrels, cats, mice and even a skunk deliberately left behind to frighten her,” said Maria Bolotta, daughter of Carmela Canino, an 87 year old widow. Canino shared a semi-detached house with Scala.

“It became impossible for me to spend quality time with her or to enjoy her property with her because of the horrible skeletons, fake camera, pitchforks, and tombs bearing her name that we had to face when we went outside.” continued Bolotta.

Bolotta recounted finding 22 sharpened bicycle spokes jabbed into the lawn while she was out with the lawn mower.

Justice Kathleen Caldwell’s sentencing of Scala was followed by a three year probation, counseling, and 200 hours of community service. Additionally he must pay the neighbourhood victims restitution and stay away from the neighbourhood and its residents.

His father, Felice Scala aged 62, faces four charges related to his son’s crimes and will appear in court in June.

Your Choice Of Umbrellas Round, Square Or Rectangle?}

An outdoor business means you will need some kind of outdoor shade for those extreme weather days. After all, you do not want your customers to be turned away from your place simply because it is wet or too hot, do you?

This is where the commercial patio umbrella comes in. The main difference between the commercial version and the normal one is that the commercial ones are usually larger and hardier. And indeed, they have to be because they have to last a lot longer in order to be cost-effective. Since they will be used almost continuously, they will have to withstand arduous wear and tear, especially during harsh weather conditions. The continuous strong sun coupled with the wet rain and dampness of dew will definitely wear out the umbrella. However, the longer you do not have to do any replacement on the umbrella, the better.

The commercial patio umbrella comes in a few types:

– Wooden. Usually preferred by beach resorts and places of business with a rustic theme, these are freestanding and heavy items that are often beautiful by design. They are pretty expensive, though, which makes them all the more appealing as a classy piece of outdoor dcor.

– Aluminum. More lightweight than wooden ones, these can be more common than wooden ones as they fit any dcor theme and are usually cheaper than their wood counterparts. They are also lighter which means they can be more easily moved about.

– Stainless steel. These well-liked as they are rust-proof and often beautiful to touch and look at. However, they are better off in their original form and unpainted.

– Plastic. About the same cost as aluminum ones, plastic patio umbrellas are usually used in more private settings or those that are not too exposed to harsh weather conditions. This is because plastic is less durable than aluminum in certain ways; their paint, for example, peels away much faster and easily than those on an aluminum base.

– Wrought iron. These are beautiful, ornately decorated umbrella sets. Unfortunately, they are also extremely heavy and thus, usually used in a permanent spot. They are also considerably expensive. However, wrought iron is extremely beautiful and often appreciated for their distinguished classiness.

If you are looking for something unique yet practical, it would be a good idea to explore the different shapes the commercial patio umbrella comes in. You will be amazed at how an outdoor umbrella in a different shape can really change about how a space looks like. Some shapes, however, have the equal balance of aesthetics and practicality while others are for purely aesthetic purposes. It is, therefore, pretty important that you weight each option carefully before purchase.

There are a few basic options available in the market:

– The square umbrella is, by far, the most popular. This is simply because by its very shape, it provides ample shelter and can fit most spaces quite easily. Most spaces are pretty squarish in shape, so having an umbrella in a similar design will fit in nicely.

– The rectangle umbrella is a little less common. Slightly elongated on its sides, it is a good shade choice for longer dining tables or for groups of little tables strung together.

– The round umbrella is ideal for smaller clusters of guests. As round tables are often more casual, this type of shade is perfect for beach resorts, sports complexes and pool sides.

– The triangle umbrella is another unique sight. Often, this is chosen more for its looks and uniqueness than anything else, as it can be difficult to position this one. It is not often that you would find a commercial patio umbrella in this shape.

– The octagonal umbrella is growing in popularity simply because its shape allows for more shade beneath. Due to its eight sides, it is usually larger in size, making it conducive for commercial spaces.

– The hexagonal umbrella, like its octagonal counterpart, is just as practical sometimes. It covers a smaller area than its eight-sided cousin but is able to provide more shade than a square or rectangle umbrella.

Commercial spaces require more innovative and decorative ways of providing shade. Balancing practicality with aesthetics can be quite tricky at times so knowing all your options from the beginning is a smart move. While there are many types of commercial patio umbrellas for you, not all will be what you need.

BBC correspondent missing

Posted on November 28, 2017November 28, 2017Categories Uncategorized

Monday, March 12, 2007

The BBC says it is concerned for the safety of its correspondent in the Gaza Strip, Alan Johnston. The BBC said it had been unable to make contact with Johnston , however it did not make any comments on Palestinian reports that he had been kidnapped.

Johnston’s car was found abandoned in Gaza City shortly after he left his office to drive home.

Jaime Razuri, a photographer working for Agence France-Presse (AFP), was kidnapped January 1, 2007 and released a week later. On October 24, 2006, the Spanish photographer Emilio Morenatt of the Associated Press (AP) was kidnapped by Palestinian gunmen and freed later that day.

In all, 14 journalists in all have been kidnapped in Gaza since 2004. Johnston, 44, has been the BBC’s correspondent in Gaza for three years.

The BBC stated that:

We are currently unable to contact him and are concerned for his safety. We are trying to gather as much information as possible.

Details of what happened are sketchy. Palestinian police said four gunmen were seen in the vicinity of where Johnston’s car was found. Palestinian Interior Minister Sayeed Sayyam said Johnston’s disappearance was a “criminal act”. Palestinian security forces set up checkpoints around Gaza and were searching for Johnston.

One of the few Western correspondents still inside Gaza itself, Johnston has been described by the BBC as a

…highly experienced and respected reporter…

According to Paul Adams, now the BBC’s diplomatic correspondent, himself a former Middle East reporter, said that:

It is his [Johnston’s] job to bring us day after day reports of the Palestinian predicament in the Gaza Strip

Johnston was born in Tanzania and educated in Scotland. He joined the BBC in 1991 and has spent eight of the last 16 years as a correspondent, generally in the Middle East (in Nations such as Uzbekistan and Afghanistan). Johnston is on his last few weeks in Gaza.

How To Motivate Yourself To Exercise

Posted on November 27, 2017November 27, 2017Categories Uncategorized

By Ronnie Nijmeh

Do you need to lose weight and know that you need to exercise to make it happen? We all know that exercise is good for us and that it will change our body and allow us to live a healthier lifestyle, but we choose not to do it. Yes, it is a

choice

for most of us!

Exercise takes motivation and if you are lacking that motivation it doesn’t mean that you have to continue to live an unfit lifestyle, it means that you need to make a change starting now. Many people have found that exercise affirmations keep them motivated to exercise and they are able to change their lifestyle in the process.

Think Positive, Exercise, Be Fit

Exercise affirmations are statements that encapsulate your ideals and goals as far as exercise goes. Basically they are statements that will motivate you to keep exercising while focusing on the positive. Exercise affirmations can be something such as, “My body is a well-oiled, precise machine and exercise is its maintenance.”

It seems simple, right? It is! When you are having one of those days where you are thinking about driving right past the gym to go to the fast food joint you can say this to yourself and you’ll find that you’ll actually want to turn into the parking lot at the gym! Exercise affirmations won’t get the workout done for you, but they will help you push through even when you are tired, sore, or would rather be doing something else!

It sounds too simple to be true, but the fact of the matter is that affirmations work. You don’t need to pay anyone to motivate you; in fact you can use free positive affirmations and get results. As long as you believe in the statement that you are saying you can make it a reality. When you believe in them and use them regularly, especially at your moments of weakness, you will be able to turn your life around by making exercise as important as it should be in your life.

It’s simple to drive past the gym each day and head for the coffee shop or head for home, but simple isn’t always better. Exercise affirmations will remind you that your body is worth taking care of and though it may not always be your first choice of what you could be doing, it’s worth it. When you use affirmations, positive reinforcement is sure to follow because the more you exercise the better you’ll look and feel, and everyone loves to look and feel their best.

Whether you are trying to lose weight, tone up, or simply stay fit, exercise affirmations will work for you if you believe in them. These little statements do away with the negative thought processes that you may currently go through and will replace them with positive self-talk.

The power of positive thinking through exercise affirmations may surprise you at first, but it’ll be a surprise that you are willing to repeat over and over again once you get started. If you are looking for motivation, you truly do not have to look any further than positive affirmations so long as you believe.
